Video from The Charlatans UK: Asian woman sells body to support white boyfriend

by guest contributor Kevin

Here is a new high concept video by the band The Charlatans UK called “Blackened Blue Eyes” being aired nationally. The lead female role is played by an Asian woman. You’ll never guess what role she plays. I’ll give you a hint, it’s not the pimp role or the john role. If you guessed anything more prestigious than a prostitute… well, you’re headed for disappointment.

The archetype of the eager to please Asian woman doing anything for her charmingly reckless white suitor has become a celebrated ideal of oriental romanticism. Pursued by evil Chinese thugs, who (surprisingly) are easily swayed by the almighty dollar, one would assume any reasonable woman would leave her dirtbag pimp-boyfriend. Not so for this Asian woman. She seems to suggest that despite being a whore and getting slapped around by her customers… there are worse things in life? Probably things like a stifling Asian culture and cold Asian men who are always accused of… treating their women like property?

The moral of the story: Stand by your white man, even if he whores you out for money.

Kelly Hu plays high school valedictorian turned masseuse

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

kelly hu dara lee in case of emergencyHorrendous. Angry Asian Man reports on a new sitcom that brings us a stereotype double whammy:

I’ve been seeing commercials for this new ABC midseason comedy In Case of Emergency, starring Kelly Hu. As reported here previously, she plays Dara Lee, a once-high school valedictorian, now a hooker in a Korean massage parlor. WONDERFUL. Indeed, it is possible to portray not one, but two opposite Asian stereotypes in one role. And man, don’t get me started about the red dress they have here wearing in the photo here. For the curious, the show is scheduled to premiere on January 3rd.

Yo shortaaaaaaay! and other techniques of “ghetto pickup artists”

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

ghetto passThe latest installment in The Assimilated Negro‘s Ghetto Pass series for Gawker (“helping you safely navigate among the people and places of browner territories”) is absolutely hilarious.

So far he has tackled the ghetto Chinese spot, the corner bodega, and gypsy cabs. His latest tutorial is one that I think all women in New York City can relate to: the ghetto pickup artist.

Cat-Call & Response – The basic repertoire for any GPA consists of seven approaches:

  • The Staredown – Basic eye contact. Direct and aggressive.
  • The Stare and Pucker – Add a scrunched-up face with puckered lips.
  • The Stare and Kiss – Now add kissing noises to the pucker.
  • The Stare and Hiss – Now switch to hissing sounds, alternating with kissing.
  • The Religious Proclamation – “Praise Jesus girl, you are fine!”
  • The Conversation/Block Escort – “Can I talk with you mami …”. Must engage for full length of block HQ.
  • The Loud Conversation with a Friend – “YO RICKY, do you see this girl over here? Yeah, the pretty one that’s walking all fast. You think I should talk to her?”

There Is One Tip: If you’re in the mood for being holla’d at, then just relax and let the GPAs do their thing. If you DO NOT wish to be approached, then you are advised to remove your makeup, hair, lips, eyelashes, breasts, and buttocks. Basically look as much like a man as possible. Do not use lotion, lip-gloss, Vaseline, or anything that reflects light. A burlap sack or garbage-bag poncho to cover your body helps, as long as it’s not actually raining, in which case the raindrops that fall on your exposed elbows will glisten far too much to feel secure in your undesirability.

Mike Tyson literally cashes in on big black buck archetype

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

Wow. Not only is Mike Tyson willing to fight women for a paycheck, now he’s signed up with Heidi Fleiss to become a prostitute. (Cue inappropriate Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo jokes here.) From Star Pulse:

Former boxing champion Mike Tyson is to become a male escort after agreeing to work at legendary Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss’ new legalized brothel for women. Fleiss bought 60 acres of land in Nevada, and his work is scheduled to begin on Heidi’s Stud Farm.

She has high hopes for Tyson, once heavyweight champion of the world – despite the fact he is a convicted rapist.

She says, “I told him, ‘You’re going to be my big stallion.’ It’s every man’s fear that their girlfriend will go for Mike Tyson.”

Tyson, 40, adds, “I don’t care what any man says, it’s every man’s dream to please every woman – and get paid for it.”

I’m hung like a black man

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

i'm hung like a black man t-shirtI think it’s probably time for us to start a questionable t-shirt category (remember this and this?). Thanks to Dorothy for this tip!

I don’t know what’s worse: the shirt itself or the description used to sell the shirt:

I’M HUNG LIKE A BLACK MAN! T-SHIRT
When you’re fishin’ for ho’s with a rod like this, bitches can’t help but to jump in da boat. Brown / Im Hung Like A Black Man Novelty T-shirt is made of 100% machine washable cotton.

Hey Hollywood, Black, Asian, and Latino Men Do Fall In Love!

by guest contributor Rachel Sullivan, originally posted at Rachel’s Tavern

empty bedI saw this great post on the All Things Considered Blog about love scenes in the top grossing movies. The author, Steven Barnes, reviewed love scenes in the 350 films that have earned more than $100 million dollars. Barnes found that 50 of these movies had loves scenes, which he operationalizes as scenes that insinuate sex, but not one of those scenes included a male actor who was not white.

From PG through R, from Bond through Basic Instinct, you’ll find such scenes in about 15 percent of the most popular films ever made. And every single one features a white guy.

If you scan the same list for American films with non-white leads (again, there are about 50), you’ll find love scenes in zero percent. That’s right, zero. No blacks. No Latinos. No Asians. Hollywood makes such films; you can find them further down on the list. But America won’t watch them.

Barnes goes on to make an argument that I don’t agree with. He says that the problem is about “male territorial behavior,”

I’m convinced that the problem is not just “Hollywood executives.” They’re no better or worse than the rest of us. They simply try to keep track of what the audience wants and rejects, as measured by box office receipts.

And I don’t believe there’s something especially twisted or limited about the white majority. I think this little statistical blip has to do with human perception itself — and most specifically, male territorial behavior.

When confronted with this statistic, some people ask why I don’t count movies such as Will Smith’s delightful Hitch. Simple: There are no love scenes. Hugs and kisses don’t make babies. I suspect that it’s the depiction of specific reproductive behavior, even at a genteel When Harry Met Sally level, that triggers the most powerful negative response, especially in male alpha-warrior types.

This is where he and I part ways. This can’t just be reduced to male on male competition, and better analysis would incorporate the structures of race, gender, and sexuality.

I think one of the primary ways that groups are marginalized is through control of their sexuality. The control can be exercised directly through sexual violence (i.e. rape), forced breeding, and coercion. It can been done indirectly through stereotyping and erasure. I think one of the primary ways that Black, Asian, Latino, and American Indian sexuality is controlled today is through what Patricia Hill Collins calls controlling images. Popular movies, TV programs, music, and almost every other major form of popular culture contribute these controlling images when they avoid showing African Americans in intimate, loving relationships. Not only are people of color not shown in loving relationships, we also rarely see intimate family relationships. Continue reading
