Yep, I’m stepping out of my Sexual Correspondent role for a hot minute. My other job at the R is to help in compiling the Links Round-up you see here almost every day.

I just want to give a big bouquet of gratitude to everyone who contributes to and comments on them. I want to give a special shout-out to Carleandria, who not only gives us quality links on the daily at delicious but also provides great international links. Also special thanks to Rob Schmidt, InfodivaMLIS415, molecularshyness, Restructure!, ananser, Jasmine, and Just Checking, who also pass along fantastic links to us. Continuing our new series on Racialicious: Link Love! I’m going to use this series to shine a spotlight on some of the blogs that I consider daily must-reads. So if you’re looking for new blogs to add to your daily media diet, you’re in the right place.

Many of you probably already read Angry Asian Man regularly. But if you’re not familiar with his blog, run – don’t walk! As someone who’s been blogging since 2001, Phil Yu can definitely be considered an OG in the blogosphere.

His blog is a one-stop shop for any and all news, events and issues related to Asian America. But Angry Asian Man goes beyond that. The blog has played a crucial role in getting the word out about some of the biggest Asian-American protest campaigns over the past few years: from Abercrombie & Fitch’s racist “Two Wongs Can Make It White” T-shirts to Details magazine’s “Gay or Asian?” column.

Phil was profiled in The Washington Post a couple years ago and the article’s description of his blog is pretty good:

The site doesn’t boast big numbers — about 60,000 hits a month, Yu says — but since launching in February 2001, it’s become a daily must-read for the media-savvy, socially conscious, pop-cultured Asian American. It’s part Gawker (“Check out this Bud Light commercial. Just another Asian karate dude . . . getting his [butt] kicked . . . By an old lady . . . That’s racist! “); part Drudge Report (“New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson acknowledges in his new autobiography that Wen Ho Lee was ‘mistreated’ “); part Ain’t It Cool News (“The new TV drama, ‘Inconceivable,’ starring Ming Na, premiered last night on NBC . . . Hopefully, they’ll give her more to do than they did on ‘ER.’ “). But it’s also altogether original.

Link love: Oh Word

Today I’m shining a spotlight on Oh Word. In their own words, the point of their existence is “to provide a meaningful discussion of hip-hop… and to get our rocks off.” Also, “appearing hip, making money, and basking in Internet pseudo-celebrity are nothing more than secondary goals for us.”

Basically, it’s a smart, analytical and funny blog about hip hop. Here are some of my favorite posts:

Another Bad Creation: Greeting cards for Hip-hop heads
The Father’s day page includes this picture of some kid smoking a blunt with Mos Def and this card from a kid whose Dad left him with nothing but a pair of Timbs to grow into.

Gifts for Lupe
Lupe’s mad at Nas’ accusations that current rappers don’t know their history and are ruining the art form. Considering Lupe admitted to not knowing a single word off Midnight Marauders (much less owning it) in this same post, one can assume that his favorite rapper’s words struck a raw nerve.

Wrassling
No, what’s annoying about it is that by acknowledging the comparison, we’ve more or less accepted it as status quo. No one ever goes “rap is like pro-wrestling: we need to do something about it”. Instead, when some rapper gets shot, we roll our eyes, repeat the line and go back to our business.

In 07 I want to hear a rap album that…
Doesn’t talk about guns or drug sales. Doesn’t complain about the state of rap. Not even once. Isn’t afraid to be funny and crack jokes. Isn’t about spoiled multi-millionaires with nothing to say…

Link Love: MultiCultClassics

Introducing a new series on Racialicious: Link Love! I’m going to use this series to shine a spotlight on some of the blogs that I consider daily must-reads. So if you’re looking for new blogs to add to your daily media diet, you’re in the right place.

First up is MultiCultClassics, written by HighJive, an anonymous person or team of persons (it’s all very mysterious) who are insiders in the ad industry. They do a great job of tearing apart those lame-ass “we care about diversity” ads that every company nowadays seems to run, and also weigh in on general race and pop culture issues.

MultiCultClassics has also done a phenomenal job of covering the ongoing investigation by the New York City Human Rights Commission into the advertising industry’s hiring practices (check out episode 43 of Addicted to Race for more on that). Basically, the ad industry is so incredibly undiverse that the entire industry is under investigation.
