The Champ) decided to create a really flip response to Zerlina Maxwell&#8217;s Ebony.com piece &#8220;<a href="http://www.ebony.com/news-views/stop-telling-women-how-to-not-get-raped">Stop Telling Women How to Not Get Raped.&#8221;</a> Despite Maxwell writing lines like these:</p><blockquote><p>Our community, much like society-at-large, needs a paradigm shift as it relates to our sexual assault prevention efforts. For so long all of our energy has been directed at women, teaching them to be more “ladylike” and to not be “promiscuous” to not drink too much or to not wear a skirt. Newsflash: men don’t decide to become rapists because they spot a woman dressed like a video vixen or because a girl has been sexually assertive.</p><p>How about we teach young men when a woman says stop, they stop? How about we teach young men that when a woman has too much to drink that they should not have sex with her, if for no other reason but to protect themselves from being accused of a crime? How about we teach young men that when they see their friends doing something inappropriate to intervene or to stop being friends? The culture that allows men to violate women will continue to flourish so long as there is no great social consequence for men who do so.</p></blockquote><p>Damon still decided to write his piece, <a href="http://verysmartbrothas.com/rape-responsibility-and-the-fine-line-between-victim-blaming-and-common-sense/">essentially asking this question</a>:</p><blockquote><p>But, why can’t both genders be educated on how to act responsibility around each other? What’s stopping us from steadfastly instilling “No always means no!” in the minds of all men and boys and educating women how not to put themselves in certain situations? Of course men shouldn’t attempt to have sex with a woman who’s too drunk to say no, but what’s wrong with reminding women that if you’re 5’1 and 110 pounds, it’s probably not the best idea to take eight shots of Patron while on the first, second, or thirteenth date? Yes, sober women definitely get raped too, but being sober and aware does decrease the likelihood that harm may come your way, and that’s true for each gender.</p><p>It seems as if the considerable push back again victim-blaming has pushed all the way past prudence and levelheadedness, making anyone who suggests that “women can actually be taught how to behave too” insensitive or a “rape enabler.” And, while the sentiment in Maxwell’s article suggests that victim-blaming is dangerous, I think it’s even more dangerous to neglect to remind young women that, while it’s never their fault if they happen to get sexually assaulted, they shouldn’t thumb their noses to common sense either.</p></blockquote><p>Damon&#8217;s already <a href="http://verysmartbrothas.com/takeaways-from-yesterdays-rape-responsibility-discussion/">(somewhat) apologized </a>and been raked over the coals by folks on his site, Twitter, and Tumblr.</p><p>So my goal in writing this piece isn&#8217;t to hold him accountable&#8211;that&#8217;s already gone on. My goal in writing this is to answer his question. And since I recently gave a talk at Swarthmore on rape culture, I just so happen to have a bunch of examples and facts right at my fingertips.</p><p><center><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-20096" title="Screen Shot 2012-01-25 at 7.28.16 PM" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Screen-Shot-2012-01-25-at-7.28.16-PM.png" alt="" width="759" height="571" /></center><span id="more-20095"></span></p><p>First, the primary premise is flawed.</p><p>Damon seems to think that reinforcing to men that circumstances and consent are different things means that we are also letting women off the hook for reckless behavior. However, most men aren&#8217;t privy to all the rape prevention tactics women employ everyday, as a matter of course. (For the purposes of this discussion, the framing will be around cisgender, heterosexual men and women, though we are not the only people impacted by this type of thinking and this type of violence.)</p><p>I could share stories about being told from the time I started going out to always cover your drink with a napkin, never be alone after dark, always have your keys out in case of an attack, to never be alone with a guy you don&#8217;t know. I was also told not to open the door for boys I didn&#8217;t know, but in my case, it was the <a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2008/12/21/original-essay-the-not-rape-epidemic/">boy you kind of know</a> that gets you. But I digress.</p><p>We could tell our stories all day, but where&#8217;s the data? When I presented at Swathmore, I ran a little experiment based on a question<em> I</em> had. How do men talk about rape? So I took it to the newsstands.</p><p><em>Cosmopolitan Magazine</em> is best known for it&#8217;s unrelenting focus on sex tips, meeting men, and the ubiquitous &#8220;75 new ways to make him pop!&#8221; feature. However, in each issue, <em>Cosmo</em> always has something on rape prevention. Since they are the most popular magazine sold on college campuses, they just rolled out an initiative on stopping campus rape, encouraging their readers to lobby their schools and Congress for changes. If you search the content on the <em>Cosmo</em> website, <a href="http://www.cosmopolitan.com/search/?q=rape">a search for rape </a>pulls up 24 action oriented articles&#8211;however, that is misleading as the majority of Cosmo&#8217;s content in magazine exclusive, so a lot of their monthly features aren&#8217;t in there. I&#8217;ve been reading <em>Cosmo</em> since I was 17&#8211;if they run one article on rape prevention each month (and sometimes, they run two), I will have consumed 132 of them. And that&#8217;s just <em>Cosmo</em>. Other major women&#8217;s magazines, like <em>Essence</em>, <em>Marie Claire</em>, and <em>Glamour</em> also cover rape, but not with the same frequency as <em>Cosmo.</em></p><p><center><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-20097" title="Screen Shot 2012-01-25 at 7.37.07 PM" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Screen-Shot-2012-01-25-at-7.37.07-PM.png" alt="" width="755" height="570" /></center>So how do Men&#8217;s Magazines stack up?</p><p><center><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-20101" title="Screen Shot 2012-01-25 at 7.41.01 PM" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Screen-Shot-2012-01-25-at-7.41.01-PM.png" alt="" width="757" height="570" /></center>Interestingly, most men&#8217;s magazines don&#8217;t do &#8220;How Not to Rape&#8221; articles. They don&#8217;t really do &#8220;How Not to Get Raped Articles.&#8221; A further reading into what these articles were about revealed that most of the articles listed on men&#8217;s mags weren&#8217;t about rape at all&#8211;many were jokes about prison rape (or reviews of <em>Oz</em>) or contained the specific phrase &#8220;against abortion except in cases of rape of incest.&#8221; With one huge exception from <em>Esquire</em>&#8216;s Tom Chiarella, the majority of men&#8217;s articles that mention rape aren&#8217;t actually dealing with the subject.</p><p>In my talk, before I got into the rape-culture nitty gritty, I asked students to consider a scenario:</p><blockquote><p>[A] spends a late night drinking heavily at a bar. After going a few rounds [A] meets a group of people that includes [B]. [A] continues to hang out with the group for a while, drinking more and more. Later, [A] ends up with [B] alone. [A and B] are both dating other people. Something went down &#8211; but [A] was so drunk [A] doesn’t remember exactly what happened. Neither does [B].</p></blockquote><p>I asked who was at fault. There are no easy answers. If I say A is female, a lot of people responding to Champ&#8217;s post might have said that she needed to take responsibility for drinking so much. But what if I say A is male and B is female?</p><p>This is the rape story in <em>Details</em>, about a guy named Kevin Driscoll <a href="http://www.details.com/culture-trends/critical-eye/201106/kevin-driscoll-rape-charges-jail-assault-stigma-reputation">who was brought up on rape charges</a>. He&#8217;s the person I condensed into the A story.</p><blockquote><p>As he was packing the car, Driscoll got a call on his cell phone. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know if you know who this is or not,&#8221; the caller said, &#8220;but, um, this is the girl from the other night.&#8221; He remembered her as the pale brunette with the big smile he&#8217;d picked up two nights earlier at the Tumble Inn, a dive bar a couple of miles from his home in Redmond. They talked for a few minutes. The woman said she was in a relationship and was freaked out about contracting an STD. Driscoll assured her that he was clean but promised he&#8217;d get tested again. &#8220;Like, why didn&#8217;t you just stop, like, when I was trying to tell you no?&#8221; she casually added. &#8220;Well, you didn&#8217;t say no,&#8221; he responded. Soon the woman wished Driscoll a good day, and he hung up, perplexed. He got everyone in the car and started to drive, but he didn&#8217;t get far—a police car pulled him over a few blocks away, in front of Pappy&#8217;s Pizzeria. Moments later, four more squad cars appeared. The officers, their hands on their guns, ordered Driscoll and Dunn out of the car. One took Driscoll aside and told him he&#8217;d have to come down to the station. Driscoll asked for a minute to talk to Dunn, who was getting visibly upset. &#8220;That cop told me you beat some girl to death and raped her,&#8221; Driscoll recalls her screaming as he walked toward her. &#8220;What the fuck is going on?!&#8221;</p><p>And so began Kevin Driscoll&#8217;s nightmare. Charges of first-degree rape—three counts. A very public humiliation. Two trials. And the loss of just about everything he valued in life. After two years, Driscoll was acquitted of all charges—when the not-guilty verdict was handed down, each of the jurors shook his hand—but to him that&#8217;s no more than a footnote to the fact that he will forever live under a cloud of accusation, a pariah. Last Halloween he ran into two friends who hadn&#8217;t spoken with him since he was taken into custody. &#8220;I heard everything worked out for you,&#8221; one had said. &#8220;Yep, that&#8217;s what I heard too,&#8221; Driscoll said.</p></blockquote><p>&#8220;You didn&#8217;t say no&#8221; is not a &#8220;yes.&#8221; And somehow I doubt that people tsk-tsked Driscoll about taking responsibility for how much he was drinking and going home with people he didn&#8217;t know. That&#8217;s almost exclusively reserved for women. Ultimately, a jury decided to clear Driscoll of the charges&#8211;but reading that story as a feminist, I wonder what kind of messages Driscoll received about rape and consent. (Not to mention fidelity.)</p><p>Moving on from Driscoll, the crux of my talk was that pop culture helps to normalize rape culture by painting problematic behavior as okay, and even laudable or romantic. Case in point: <em>The Twilight Series</em>. There&#8217;s a lot of questionable content in there, that has been discussed for years and years at this point. But it is fascinating to contrast a scene that made it into the movie and the book.</p><p><center><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dVvJnPA8bvI" frameborder="0" width="640" height="360"></iframe></center>(Notice that undercurrent of violence right there amongst all the sweet talk? Rape culture <a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2009/05/21/harshin-ur-squeez-visual-rhetorics-of-anti-racist-work-in-livejournal-fandoms-conference-notes/">harshes my squee</a>, son. They&#8217;re making it hard to be Team SuckaAssJacob.)</p><p>You know what&#8217;s so bad about that scene? Besides the fact that you have a man literally forcing himself on a woman (just not with his penis)? The one in the book is actually <em>worse!</em></p><p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-20102" title="Screen Shot 2012-01-25 at 8.07.15 PM" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Screen-Shot-2012-01-25-at-8.07.15-PM.png" alt="" width="762" height="564" /></p><p>Why is she using the type of tactics that rape survivors describe to escape from the situation to talk about this kiss?</p><p>But Jacob is still one of two heroes, and he and Bella go on to share a consensual kiss later in the series.</p><p>Films and books aren&#8217;t the only places where rape culture is normalized.</p><p>It also occurs in music videos. In the talk, I illustrate these points with clips from Byron Hurt&#8217;s <em><a href="http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/hiphop/">Beyond Beats and Rhymes</a></em>, and from Sut Jhally&#8217;s <em><a href="http://www.mediaed.org/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&amp;key=223">Dreamworlds 3.</a></em> (Some images NSFW.)</p><p><center><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KGol7fha8uk" frameborder="0" width="640" height="480"></iframe></center>(Relevant part of the clip starts at 6:05 with Beverly Guy-Sheftall and runs to the end.)</p><p>Sut Jhally takes a multi-genre look at how rape culture is encoded in our society, with seemingly innocuous choices in music videos. While Jhally makes powerful points by just stripping away the sound, but he really drives the point home at 4:12, where he contrasts the images of women being assaulted in Central Park with popular music video tropes.</p><p><center><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KkG9Qx74ES8" frameborder="0" width="640" height="480"></iframe></center>Here&#8217;s what he concludes:</p><p><center><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/oZ1ZKJDC8zY" frameborder="0" width="640" height="480"></iframe></center>Rape culture is why we have to treat random men on the street like <a href="http://kateharding.net/2009/10/08/guest-blogger-starling-schrodinger%E2%80%99s-rapist-or-a-guy%E2%80%99s-guide-to-approaching-strange-women-without-being-maced/">Schrodinger&#8217;s Rapist</a>. Because we don&#8217;t know. And we can&#8217;t know.</p><p>To expand on an earlier point, here&#8217;s the full Limp Bizkit video:</p><p><center><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Cb24kLd459Y" frameborder="0" width="640" height="360"></iframe></center>What Durst fantasizes about in the video has been conveyed to me by men on the street time and time again. Reject me, there will be violence. Accept me, and there will be love (edged with a violent threat). This video isn&#8217;t just exploring the pornographic imagination, as Jhally says&#8211;at this point, we&#8217;ve entered the psychopathic imagination. In this world, a woman will acquiesce to a man&#8217;s demands through a combination of pretty words and violence. Durst&#8217;s created world is disturbing&#8211;a kidnapped and terrified woman will eventually come around to love? Are you fucking kidding me?</p><p>At this point, people who haven&#8217;t spent a lot of time thinking through rape culture will be screaming. &#8220;All men aren&#8217;t like that!&#8221; Yeah, most of us are aware of that. But it only takes one to change how you approach other interactions forever. It only takes one to destroy your trust in the inherent goodness of other people. And it only takes one to fuck up your life.</p><p>The men reading this probably aren&#8217;t that one guy. (Then again,<a href="http://www.salon.com/2009/03/26/rapist_on_facebook/"> you could be</a>&#8230;to someone else.)</p><p>But most of us have already met him.</p><p>Women are told, over and over again, that it is their responsibility to keep themselves safe. And in the event that you fail, rape culture will ensure that people will blame you for dropping your vigilance, while directing little, if any attention to the person who actually acted without consent. My mom failed to convince me in my 20s and 30s to &#8220;have children.&#8221; My co-workers failed, too. The rare co-worker nowadays still tries to talk me into it &#8212; and yes, even my mom still tries &#8212; appealing to some notion of an impending spinsterhood if I don&#8217;t essentially create my future caregiver and &#8220;someone who&#8217;ll love me.&#8221; As I had to remind Mom, having children is, essentially, a crap shoot as far as their &#8220;loving you&#8221; and you &#8220;loving them&#8221;: how many stories have we heard of people who give birth but who don&#8217;t form that &#8220;nurturing instinct&#8221; with their newborns? How many stories have we heard about children disowning and getting disowned by parents, let alone loving you enough to want to take care of you in your old age? (The resentment and burnout of grown children taking care of elderly parents are real.)</p><p>My long-held reason, I tell them all, is that I simply do not like children enough to gestate or adopt and rear one (or two or more). I don&#8217;t have the patience to provide that long-term emotional support and don&#8217;t wish to share my material resources with a child. This is very much in line with <a href="http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortion.html#7a" target="_blank">a study</a> cited by the Guttmacher Institute in August, 2011: &#8220;The reasons women give for having an abortion underscore their understanding of the responsibilities of parenthood and family life. Three-fourths of women cite concern for or responsibility to other individuals; three-fourths say they cannot afford a child; three-fourths say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or the ability to care for dependents; and half say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner.&#8221;</p><p>Now that I&#8217;m entering the middle part of my life, a colleague summed up my new viewpoint about [having] children: &#8220;She&#8217;s not just running down her biological clock. (And, considering how quick the box-office attendant was asking for photo IDs for this NC-17 flick, I guess quite a few under-17 others were trying to see the younger Magneto&#8217;s full frontal nudity, too.)</p><p><strong>MAJOR SPOILER ALERT</strong> after the jump.</p><p><span id="more-19403"></span></p><p>Synopsis: Fassbender plays Brandon, a white, handsome, successful office-working something-or-other (the film never states what he does for a living or where he works) living the upscale&#8211;and rather white&#8211;NYC life.  Brandon also has a sexual addiction, which McQueen frames as Brandon lacking any emotional connections and/or the ability to go about forming healthy ones&#8211;even with his own sister&#8211;in tandem with a series of sexual behaviors: Brandon inviting and paying female sex workers of various races and ethnicities; constantly masturbating (you first see him jerking off in his shower, and later he&#8217;s shown doing it in his office bathroom; and his sister catches him jerking off in a toilet); getting paranoid about the IT department talking about his hard drive, only to have his boss call him into the office about the porn found on it (though the boss blames Brandon&#8217;s intern for it, not Brandon); hooking up with a white woman at a bar that his married boss initially tried to pick up; his picking up another white woman at a random bar and, after some consensual fingering, puts his fingers under her white boyfriend&#8217;s nose to sniff (which leads to the boyfriend assaulting Brandon); after the assault, Brandon following a racially ambiguous male sex worker into the backroom of a gay bar, where he kisses the sex worker and gets a blowjob; participating in a threesome with two female sex workers, portrayed by white burlesquer <a title="DeeDee Luxe website" href="http://www.deedeeluxe.com/">DeeDee Luxe</a> and Asian burlesque star <a title="Calamity Chang website" href="http://calamitychang.com/">Calamity</a> <a title="Calamity Chang's blog" href="http://calamitychang.blogspot.com/">Chang</a> (both links NSFW).</p><p>When Brandon attempts to form a healthy romantic connection&#8211;after his sister busts him masturbating into the toilet&#8211;he throws out his massive porn collection and a couple of sex toys and approaches Marianne (<a title="Nicole Beharie bio" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2718512/bio"><em>American Violet</em>&#8216;s Nicole Beharie</a>), who works at his office. She is one of the few Black people (let alone people of color) at the firm. They go on a date:</p><p><object width="560" height="315" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HeiLN4oiRPw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="560" height="315" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HeiLN4oiRPw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p><p>Then Brandon invites Marianne for an afternoon tryst at a hotel. Hepped up on a line of cocaine and the sheer excitement at this opportunity to prove he&#8217;s conquered his sexual addiction by himself, Marianne and he engage in some foreplay, only for Brandon not be able to get erect. Ashamed, he sends Marianne away and later has penetrative sex with a sex worker, a white woman, in the same room.</p><p>All of this is to give context to <a title="The Treatment with Director Steve McQueen" href="http://www.kcrw.com/etc/programs/tt/tt111207steve_mcqueen_shame">this radio interview </a>excerpt between <a title="Elvis Mitchell wiki" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Mitchell">film critic Elvis Mitchell</a> and McQueen. Towards the end of the interview, McQueen says this about casting Beharie as Brandon&#8217;s love interest (unfortunately, KCRW doesn&#8217;t have a full transcript of the interview):</p><blockquote><p><strong>Elvis Mitchell:</strong> I found interesting, too&#8230;there are women in the film and the way you sort of develop what the women do from Brandon. They really are fleshly in a way that he is not. I mean, they&#8217;re sort of in touch with their bodies in terms of living in the world in a way he is not: both his sister and the woman he courts at the office want to use their bodies for a different thing than he does.</p><p><strong>Steve McQueen:</strong> &#8230;of course, Marianne&#8211;she, of course, is played by Nicole Beharie&#8211;I like Marianne. She&#8217;s sort of willing to try to make something out of something, which may not be a good thing to do. But she wants to take a chance.</p><p><strong>EM:</strong> She&#8217;s also the grown-up in the movie. She represents looking for a future, which neither Brandon or Sissy are capable of doing. They&#8217;re both about the immediate. I felt it was interesting to make the one African American woman in the movie, the one person of color, [as] the person looking for a future rather than trying to find a momentary satisfaction. Even [Brandon's] boss is like that&#8211;a person who wants to be immediately gratified.</p><p><strong>SM:</strong> That&#8217;s interesting. [Laughs] I mean, other people saying to me when I came to America and I wanted to cast [Beharie]. Because when I came to research the movie, of all the people but for this one guy&#8211;I think he was from somewhere in South America&#8211;were white who were dealing with sex addiction. I suppose it&#8217;s a different kind of situation, I&#8217;d imagine, where you&#8217;d find one kind of ethnicity. But I found it fascinating.</p><p>But when it came to the workplace it was as you see it. It was one Black person. It was like, &#8220;Wow, that&#8217;s kind of interesting.&#8221; And this girl could be Brandon&#8217;s girlfriend. But what was interesting was there was all kinds of  objections about this, of saying, &#8220;Oh, that wouldn&#8217;t happen there. That wouldn&#8217;t exist.&#8221; I said, &#8220;What, I don&#8217;t exist?&#8221; It was a very odd thing, having these conversations about having a love interest that was a Black woman with Brandon. It was interesting, that. It was fascinating, that.</p><p>But then, what also fascinates me is you have a lot of white American filmmakers who never cast a Black person in their movies and they made quite a few movies. How can you avoid that? That&#8217;s kind of weird. It&#8217;s like walking around with blindfolds on. How can you make movies in this country&#8211;and consistently make movies&#8211;and not cast Black characters in the main leads? I mean, I made two movies&#8211;and they&#8217;re art films&#8211;and the feature film are 90 percent white and my art films are 90 percent Black. There&#8217;s no distinguishing the two; it&#8217;s just one thing&#8211;it&#8217;s not &#8220;art&#8221; or &#8220;film.&#8221; That&#8217;s how it is.</p><p><strong>EM:</strong> I waited fifty years for someone to say that.</p></blockquote><p>What Sarah and I chatted about over post-movie brunch is that we really appreciated McQueen&#8217;s decision to cast Beharie as Brandon&#8217;s love interest. As Mitchell observes, Marianne is an adult, a woman with her own relationship loose ends (she tells Brandon she&#8217;s separated, not divorced) and healthy sexual curiosity and appetite (she agrees to the tryst; she eagerly and sensuously kiss Brandon back as they&#8217;re hiding behind a patterned glass partition at the office). Brandon knows, regardless of his condition, he has to come correct with Marianne; his frozen face as he watches her through the window of the restaurant of their first date displays his terror. Even in the above clip, Marianne holds her own flirting with Brandon. More importantly, Marianne and Brandon are drawn to each other in the film because they&#8217;re interested in each other, not as a Very Special Episode of Interracial Dating in America. Unfortunately, their relationship is a very short one due to Brandon&#8217;s addiction &#8212; and you never see Marianne again after she leaves the hotel.</p><p>Yet, Sarah and I gave gasface to McQueen framing Brandon having sex with another man and a three-way to signify Brandon &#8220;hitting rock bottom.&#8221; Why, we rhetorically asked, does homosexuality and consensual multiple partners &#8212; neither of which are really respected in US society &#8212; have to be the film&#8217;s shorthand for &#8220;sexual depravity&#8221;? McQueen could have shown Brandon&#8217;s nadir when the boyfriend assaulted him. To show Brandon engaged with the partners as a sign his utter debasement smells of homophobia and anti-polyamory.</p><p>Is <em>Shame</em> worth seeing? If the frisson of finally seeing an NC-17 film (&#8220;Woohoo! Grown-ass flick!&#8221;) making it to your movie theater is worth the price of admission, then &#8230; well, maybe. But, like all frissons, it won&#8217;t last long. If you want to see an interracial couple that&#8217;s a couple and not a Big Social Statement a la<em> <a title="Something New wiki" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Something_New_(film)">Something New</a></em>, then&#8230;well, maybe. The relationship is short-lived. But just to see Michael Fassbender&#8217;s penis? It’s tough enough to be poor, nonwhite and female in today’s crisis-struck USA, but without legal status a woman is stripped of even those rights and resources that equal-rights and labor fights have secured. The Wild West quality of law enforcement when it comes to such new immigration laws—amid myriad state, federal and, frankly, ad hoc regulations—makes it virtually impossible to use existing protections against harassment, violence or exploitation. And abuse thrives in the chaos. Migrant women face particular threats at the border, in the workplace, even at home—and stiff odds stacked against them as they try to keep, and raise, their kids. This is what inspired women from around the country to travel to Atlanta in September under the banner We Belong Together for a conference organized by the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum. Or J’s nemesis, Nina, asking her when did she “catch cancer&#8221; due to the new &#8216;do.</p><p>Some fans responded to the overt transphobic insult with an <a title="Open Letter to Our Friends Awkward Black Girl" href="http://crunkfeministcollective.tumblr.com/post/13668840994/open-letter-to-our-friends-awkwardblkgrl">open letter on Crunk Feminist Collective Tumblr</a>:</p><blockquote><p>Dear Awkward Black Girl,</p><p>We love the show! We also love your continuous engagement with fans and your commitment to staying on the Web to maintain your vision. What we don’t love is the <a href="http://wiki.susans.org/index.php/Trans-misogyny" target="_blank">transmisogyny</a> and <a href="http://www.bilerico.com/2010/12/lets_talk_about_tranny_-_meanings.php" target="_blank">misogyny</a> in episode 11.</p><p>In episode 11, CeCe calls White Jay’s ex a “tra**y bitch in heels.” The word tra**y perpetuates violence and divisiveness amongst women by relying on the idea that trans women are not “real” women; it suggests that White Jay’s ex is somehow less than the main character J.</p><p>The word “tra**y” has a very real history of <a href="http://www.questioningtransphobia.com/?p=3785" target="_blank">violence</a> and discrimination, often targeting trans women. It has been used as a slur, as a way to objectify women, and as a way of denying the personhood of trans women on the basis of appearance.</p><p>We have seen your responsiveness to the fans of ABG and we hope that by raising this concern you will respond accordingly by not using such language in future episodes. There are so many awkward queer, trans, and disabled folks who love the show and it hurts to see and hear our lives used as punchlines. For those of us, the awkward black, queer folks who have lived at the intersections of our awkwardness, our blackness, and our transness, words like “tra**y” erase our lives, and our humanity. Phrases like “<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=0BIEMXOMyB0#t=246s" target="_blank">No lesbo</a>” and the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=miGmVCb9C4U#t=494s" target="_blank">use of affected speech to imitate hard of hearing people</a> detract from the vision of creating representations for the rest of us who are all too often maligned in mainstream media.</p><p>We look forward to many more episodes of The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl that are hilarious without the use of marginalized groups as a punchline. We take this matter especially to heart, considering the CFC and members of the LGBT community were among the first to embrace ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.’</p><p>Since our first episode debuted in February this year, ‘Awkward Black Girl’ has received an incredible outpouring of support from hundreds of thousands of fans. We love and appreciate each and every one of our fans! In return, we strive to provide a show that uses irreverent comedy and humor to address the oftentimes uncomfortable situations that many people have experienced at some point or another in their lives.</p><p>In creating a series of this nature, we are willing to accept the praise when the jokes work and the feedback when they may not.</p><p>Sincerely,</p><p>Issa &amp; Tracy</p></blockquote><p>Whereas a few Clutch Magazine commenters thought Rae&#8217;s and Oliver&#8217;s letter was&#8221;respectful&#8221; and &#8220;very well said,&#8221; quite a few commenters applauded Rae for &#8220;not apologizing&#8221; because that &#8220;would change the nature of the show.&#8221; Even Crunk Feminist Collective&#8217;s Brittney Cooper agreed  that it&#8217;s an &#8220;excellent&#8221; response. <a title="Why I Think I Love Issa Rae and Tracy Oliver Too" href="http://verysmartbrothas.com/why-i-think-i-love-issa-rae-and-tracy-oliver-too/">And the post and the comments at Very Smart Brothers applaud the response</a>, some of the commenters going so far as telling trans people (and the gay, lesbian, and bisexual people who are cisgender&#8211;oh yeah, and a few of us cis, trans, and gender non-conforming folks who love bell hooks) to &#8220;get over themselves&#8221; and &#8220;stop being so sensitive&#8221; because <em>ABG</em> &#8220;offends everyone,&#8221; especially with the liberal use of &#8220;bitch&#8221; and &#8220;n***a.&#8221; In fact, one commenter states that <em>ABG</em> using the &#8220;tr***y bitch in heels&#8221; line as a sign of acceptability for trans folks.</p><p>Dare I say it? Yes&#8230;</p><p>What the hell kind of no-pology is this?!?</p><p>Racialicious guest contributor<a title="A Black Girl's Guide to Weight Loss" href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/"> Erika Nicole Kendall</a> tweeted exactly why I felt this qualifies as a no-pology:</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/12/09/awkward-black-girl%e2%80%99s-no-pology-to-transgender-fans-and-allies/inetespionage-response-to-abg-nopology/" rel="attachment wp-att-19291"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19291" title="inetespionage response to ABG nopology" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/inetespionage-response-to-ABG-nopology-300x150.png" alt="" width="300" height="150" /></a></p><p>See, here&#8217;s my thing: if you&#8217;re saying that folks in LBGT communities are some of the first fans of your show, wouldn&#8217;t you go out of your way to not turn off that fan base  by simply saying something like, &#8220;I/We deeply apologize for saying the word &#8220;tr***y&#8221; on the ep. I could&#8217;ve used another word to talk about J&#8217;s discomfort instead of making trans people&#8211;and, by extension, our transgender fans&#8211;the butt of a joke,&#8221; instead of essentially stating you stand by a transphobic slur that is used in conjunction to do much more damage than just create &#8220;oftentimes uncomfortable situations that many people have experienced at some point or another in their lives?&#8221;</p><p>Because the word &#8220;tr***y&#8221; isn&#8217;t bantered about just to make trans people &#8220;uncomfortable.&#8221; As @graceishuman pointed out on Twitter:</p><blockquote><p> It&#8217;s only hilarious if you accept that trans women are by definition a joke. There&#8217;s no inherent humor to it beyond that.</p><p>The history of the word is that a lot of trans people, especially trans women of color, have had it used against them in <a title="Black Trans Woman Attacked in Canada" href="http://www.questioningtransphobia.com/?p=3785">the context of violence</a>, sometimes as they were being murdered.</p></blockquote><p>This post at the Tumblr <a title="I Think I Managed to Disconnect This from the Bigger Brouhaha" href="http://abellandapomegranate.tumblr.com/post/13856085851/i-think-i-managed-to-disconnect-this-from-the-bigger">a bell and a pomegranate</a> further explains why the fans who wrote the letter&#8211;and the rest of us&#8211;found the  &#8221;joke&#8221; unamusing:</p><blockquote><p>Well, and naturally, what “may have offended” some people is <em>language</em>—as though that’s the important thing, that a nasty <em>word</em> (a word, to be fair, I cringe at) was used.  But of course it wasn’t—the meaningful portion of the trouble is that the use of “tranny” as an insult to cis women is about participating in the cultural notion that trans women are fake/grotesque/doing womanhood wrong/unworthy of respect and that it is shameful/disgusting for a cis woman to be similar to one.  It’s about functioning as a placeholder for certain policing discourses about the comportment and appearance of women in general by deploying the extreme danger of trans oppression as a veiled threat while subtly shoring up that oppression.(*)  That’s why people are troubled by the word in the first place, and why the first critiques of it were brought up—not because it is an inherently evil word, but because it participates in negative, damaging stereotypes about trans women.  It could have been <em>any</em> word.  The problem is that “tranny” is deployed as a shorthand for that cultural idea.  If they’d substituted in a nicer, less-charged word as shorthand to suggest that a given woman was like a trans woman and therefore fake/grotesque/doing womanhood wrong/unworthy of respect, it would still be transphobic.</p><p>When we focus over-much on contaminated words, we sometimes miss—and allow the people who use them to sidestep—the larger problem of what those words represent and why they’re hurtful in the first place.</p><p>(*) You know, in the same way that young straight men calling each other “faggot” don’t literally mean “I think you are attracted to other men,” but “you are not behaving as I think a man should and if you don’t get in line I am suggesting you be treated as is appropriate for the disgusting people indicated by this word, who also don’t get in line and who you know are visibly punished for it.”  In the same way that “whore” and “bitch” are deployed—they suggest that there is a category of people who you are culturally aware have fewer rights/more vulnerabilities to violence/etc. and that if you do not behave as expected you might be relegated to that category and treated accordingly.  Capitalism does it by threatening people who have money with the constant specter of poverty and homelessness—and then uses that to enforce cultural norms of behavior.  Sexism does it by threatening that men might be treated like “bitches” and “pussies.”  And cissexism/transmisogyny does it by threatening cis women with worlds like “tranny” and “shemale.</p></blockquote><p>As for <em>ABG</em>&#8216;s use of the words &#8220;bitch&#8221; and &#8220;n***a&#8221; as a reason why it should be OK for the creators to, therefore, use the words &#8220;tr***y,&#8221; I&#8217;ll say here <a title="My panel interview on Rise Up Radio re: SlutWalk" href="http://secretarysbreakroom.tumblr.com/post/12692837888">what I said on a radio interview about those white feminists who defended the sign &#8220;Woman Is the N****r of the World&#8221; at SlutWalk NYC&#8217;s march</a>: unless Rae and/or other people on <em>ABG</em>&#8216;s creative team is a trans person, the word isn&#8217;t for them to use because they are outside of those communities. And, even at that, if there is a trans person on the crew, that person&#8217;s presence still doesn&#8217;t give permission or license for <em>ABG</em>&#8216;s cisgender cast and crew to use it because the other trans folks didn&#8217;t vote on that person to give that imprimatur to use the slur.</p><p>Even Patti&#8217;s comment about J being &#8220;gay&#8221; because of J&#8217;s short cut pivots on both homophobia and transphobia, namely that Black lesbians are stereotyped as &#8220;looking&#8221; a certain way that is &#8220;outside&#8221; of the hetero male gaze (and, by extension, hetero male sexual/romantic consideration), namely having a short afro, which is construed as &#8220;trying to be manly,&#8221; thus policing J&#8217;s femininity. Of course, Nina&#8217;s comment comment about &#8220;catching cancer&#8221; is simply ableist.</p><p>But I also feel like this is the part in the post where I need to repeat what we say quite a few times around the R: just because a person belongs to one or more marginalized group(s) doesn&#8217;t mean that person has an innate empathy for people in other marginalized groups. And &#8220;doing it for the art&#8221;&#8211;or to not be &#8220;politically correct&#8221;&#8211;adds insult to injury. It&#8217;s <em>Wonder Woman.</em> I&#8217;ve chose my fandom. It&#8217;s DC.</p><p>I feel horrible. I feel like I&#8217;ve just chosen my gender over my race.</p><p><span id="more-19207"></span></p><p>I picked <em>Wonder Woman</em> because the preview pages I read intrigued me. I&#8217;ve never been a big fan of Wonder Woman, but I have been a huge fan of ancient Greek myths since I was a child. The way that Azzarello and Chiang have handled the Greek pantheon has drawn me to the book. Also, quite a few people whose opinions on comics I hold in high regard have spoken fondly about the comic. Last, but certainly not least, a new universe allows me to get in on the &#8220;ground floor&#8221; of Diana&#8217;s life. All three of these elements were necessary in Wonder Woman being the series for me. That new universe free of any history to untangle is what led me to pick <em>Wonder Woman</em> over <em>Wolverine and the X-Men</em> (which also appears to be a quality book given the previews provided).</p><p><img alt="" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7154/6435133227_c6d001723a_m.jpg" class="alignleft" width="158" height="240" />But <a href="http://marvel.wikia.com/Idie_Okonkwo_%28Earth-616%29">Idie.</a> Oh, how I love Idie. Each snippet from <a href="http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/tag/char:+oya/idie+okonkwo">Scans Daily</a> I read featuring this character makes me want to crawl into a comic for the sole purpose of buying her toys and ice cream. The awkward and uneasy interaction between Wolverine and Oya is wonderful. (Wolverine buys the child her first doll ever and it&#8217;s white with long, straight hair? How lovably stupid. I can&#8217;t wait for Cecelia to call him on it.)</p><p>And though I haven&#8217;t been interested in the Amanda Waller role Marvel has foisted upon <a href="http://marvel.wikia.com/Mercedes_Knight_%28Earth-616%29">Misty Knight,</a> I adore the character of Misty Knight and hold out hope that she will return to her <em>Daughters of the Dragon</em> incarnation in her next series—or perhaps something even more interesting. I&#8217;d gladly drop <em>Wonder Woman</em> for a comic featuring Misty Knight as the lead character in a <a href="http://www.digitalfemme.com/journal/index.php?itemid=1315">female-focused series.</a></p><p>DC? DC doesn&#8217;t have a Misty Knight. DC does not have an <a href="http://marvel.wikia.com/Oya_%28Santerians%29_%28Earth-616%29">Oya.</a> Moreover, it seems as though they have no interest in developing one. And that&#8217;s why I&#8217;ve regretfully chosen gender over race. DC&#8217;s development of its female characters of color is abysmal. Though can it be abysmal if there is no development?</p><p>Unlike Marvel, black women in the DC universe are merely window dressing—objects for the actual hero(ine) of importance to struggle against or deliver a quip to. Agent Fallon, not the animalistic <a href="http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/3326921.html">Voodoo,</a> is the competent, no-nonsense heroine of <em>Voodoo.</em> <a href="http://www.comicvine.com/skitter/29-79549/">Skitter</a> is the unattractive, unpleasant monster who&#8217;ll skulk around Wonder Girl&#8217;s pedestal in <em>Teen Titans.</em> Amanda Waller is merely a supporting character providing intense action for others to engage in. The character&#8217;s role could easily be fulfilled by one panel of a Suicide Squad member listening to orders on an iPod. And though Vixen is in a better position than her peers, I certainly don&#8217;t hold out hope for the character. Look at her promotion compared to characters such as Cyborg, Batwing, Mr. Terrific, Static, and Green Lantern. If Vixen wants to be a major player in the DCU she&#8217;d better start on hormone therapy and seek out a quality surgeon.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7170/6435133165_9dfb3747d9_m.jpg" class="alignright" width="159" height="240" /> And this goes beyond just black women. Where&#8217;s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra_Cain">Cassandra Cain?</a> Where&#8217;s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talia_al_Ghul">Talia al Ghul?</a> Where&#8217;s <a href="http://www.comicvine.com/rainmaker/29-23473/">Rainmaker?</a> Does anyone really believe <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katana_%28comics%29">Katana</a> will receive the same promotion and panel time as Black Canary or Poison Ivy? Does anyone believe that <a href="http://www.comicvine.com/element-woman/29-77737/">Element Woman</a> will receive the same attention as Wonder Woman or even Mera? I certainly don&#8217;t. And I don&#8217;t believe they&#8217;ll receive the same attention as the Atom, Robin, or Blue Beetle either. For all the extolling of DC&#8217;s female-led ongoing books and all the talk concerning DC&#8217;s female-friendliness compared to Marvel, no one is talking about how that friendliness only extends to certain women.</p><p>So, one weighs the pros and cons and makes the best choice from what&#8217;s available. DC offers a lower price, a fresh start, an active fandom, and a quality creative team. Marvel offers an active fandom, a quality creative team, and female characters of color that play an important role in the Marvel universe. I just knew that my love life would not be monoracial. <a title="Duran Duran" href="http://www.sweetslyrics.com/images/img_gal/3247_duranduran2.jpg">Duran Duran</a> and <a title="Adam Ant" href="http://images.45cat.com/adam-ant-room-at-the-top-mca.jpg">Adam Ant</a> simply sealed that fate.</p><p>When I tried to find advice to help guide me on that path—my mom certainly didn’t and couldn’t help, since she dated and married only Black men—I read <em>Essence</em>. No help there:  while I was dating the rainbow, <em>Essence</em> touted various admonitions on how to achieve the Good Black Life, including the Kente cloth-themed wedding. The advice and articles about interracial dating treated those relationships as, at best, aberrations.</p><p><em>Cosmo</em>? Glamour? Beyond some “general” advice on “how to catch a man,” it was some variation of planning romantic evenings and Kegel exercises.</p><p>The first publications about interracial relationships—this was the Multiculti Late 80s and 90s&#8211;treated them as cure-alls for personal and institutional racism. I knew better than that, so that literature didn’t quite interest me. And I walked the other way — more like ran across the street and screamed down the alley &#8212; when Shahrazad Ali’s pro-intimate partner violence tome <em>Blackman’s Guide to Understanding the Blackwoman</em> became the dating manual and coffeeklatch topic du jour for Black women in the US. Nope, definitely not for me.</p><p>When I finally discovered Racialicious a few years ago, I finally found someplace that talked about dating and race, especially interracial dating, that wasn’t full of foolishness. About a couple of years the R ran a post about the <a title="Feminism, Race, and Sexist Dating Guides" href="http://www.racialicious.com/2008/09/03/feminism-race-and-sexist-dating-guides/">racial implications&#8211;and racist assumptions&#8211;of dating-advice books</a>. And we did a breakdown of how <a title="Racialicious Loves OK Cupid" href="http://www.racialicious.com/2009/10/09/racialicious-loves-ok-cupid/">race and racism worked in the online-dating world</a>. And, of course, we ran <a title="Interracial Dating Roundtable" href="http://www.racialicious.com/tag/interracial-dating-roundtable/">a series on interracial dating as a response to Essence</a> trying to position them as the Next Cure-All for the Black Woman’s Marriage Crisis.</p><p>My biggest takeaway from all of this is—surprise, surprise—the media and some people in our communities deeply participate in the Dating Economics of Not OK. Part of that economy is advertising that having color is not OK, unless you’re planning to date and mate intraracially. (The logic: you’re all the same race, so you two should relate, right?) The realities are infinitely more intricate, but intricate doesn’t sell too well.</p><p>So, I’m hoping that Samhita Mukhopadhyay’s book, <em>Outdated: Why Dating Is Ruining Your Love Life</em> becomes a best-seller. Because she not only takes inventory of all those dating-advice books cluttering bookshelves and e-reader lists, she also takes that rarest of inventory: an anti-racist feminist inventory of the whole dating industrial complex.</p><p>Mukhopadhyay reminds the reader throughout her book that these books consistently erase those who are not cisgender and heterosexual  and able-bodied and middle-class. She also says that the dating industrial complex is also rather unkind to cisgender men&#8211;all of this because they&#8217;re trafficking in narrow stereotypes based on gender binaries. And if we believe in some sort of feminism? Well, Mukhopadhyay analyzes, these books try to make that belief the reason why we’re not getting laid, let alone married. We, to paraphrase DuBois, are the 21<sup>st</sup> century problem to be solved because, so says this literature, we dare to exist&#8211;sometimes caring about being in relationships and sometimes not.</p><p>Her take, for example, on how these books—along with communities and porn—and their net effects on dating and race:</p><blockquote><p>The mainstream media is ripe with oversexualized images of women of color, and policy often stigmatized and shames this same group of people. Women of color and poor women are blamed for their inability to keep their legs closed and for having too many children. For marginalized groups of women, sex is not linked to pleasure and freedom; it is demonized and used as an example of all the ways in which these women lack self-control. As a result, a lot of conversation around sexual freedom discount the experience of people of color, failing to take into account how much sexual freedom is assumed to hinge on a woman’s privilege—be it because of her race, economic status, or social standing.</p><p>Of course, not all women of color are sexualized in the same way. For example, while black women are considered lascivious, always consenting and out of control, Latina[s] are considered exotic or overly sensual and Asian women are considered childish and prude. These particular stereotypes are reinforced through popular culture and pornography (just Google respectively “Asian women,” “black women,” or “Latina women” and then “women” and see what comes up). The common thread here is that nonwhite women’s sexuality is seen as outside the norm of white heterosexuality. It’s therefore something to uniquely desired, manipulated, exploited or controlled. Within this rather toxic climate, being a woman of color who’s in touch with her sexuality is an act of resistance. Pushing past the negative media depictions and still finding a healthy, healing, erotic, and functional sexuality is no small feat.</p><p>I have often felt trapped between discourses of sexuality. If I’m overtly sexual, I’m a threat to what it means to be a good, pious South Asian lady <em>and</em> to the white norms of sexuality. As a result, when I am sexual, I am confronting my ethnic community and the norms of white sexuality. Finding a more authentic sexuality that’s just me means pushing past what is considered the appropriate way for me to be sexual based on my race, ethnicity, and gender. This has meant a lot of experimentation, sometimes playing up how “bad” I am or being tremendously secretive about my sexual transgressions (well, clearly not after this book). And it meant sifting through partners and figuring out which ones are a little too obsessed with my being Indian.”</p></blockquote><p>Then Mukhopadhyay breaks out a list on spotting an exoticizer.</p><p>Yes. She. Does.</p><p>But that’s what she does throughout her book…and that’s what I thoroughly love about <em>Outdated</em>. It’s a great, intricate mix of feminist thought, media literacy, and a couple of tips for dating while feminist (of color) from your you-ain’t-never-lied friend who’s that romantic realist. Both, however, left me feeling the same way, which looks something like this:</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/11/14/missed-representations-parts-two-and-three-black-in-america-4-and-miss-representation/rihanna-side-eye/" rel="attachment wp-att-18931"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18931" title="Rihanna side-eye" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Rihanna-side-eye-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a></p><p>A couple of synopses before I state why I felt this way:</p><p><span id="more-18930"></span></p><p><em>Black in America 4</em> explores the rarely discussed facts and stories of Black people in digital technology, especially those who are inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Host Soledad O’Brien frames this through the stories of eight African American entrepreneurs who move into together as part of <a title="NewME Accelerator" href="http://www.newmeaccelerator.com/">digital business owners Angela Benton’s and Wayne Sutton’s NewME Accelerator</a> program, which provides Black entrepreneurs time and (relative) quiet space—and possible connections with venture capitalists—for their business ideas.</p><p><center><object id="ep" width="416" height="374" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="src" value="http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.element/apps/cvp/3.0/swf/cnn_416x234_embed.swf?context=embed&amp;videoId=living/2011/08/16/bia.journey.of.a.startup.cnn" /><embed id="ep" width="416" height="374" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.element/apps/cvp/3.0/swf/cnn_416x234_embed.swf?context=embed&amp;videoId=living/2011/08/16/bia.journey.of.a.startup.cnn" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="transparent" /></object></center></p><p>Jennifer Siebel Newsom&#8217;s<em> Miss Representation</em> connects some of the dots between the stats, the personal stories, and media images about women and how those images affect not only those in the media— Margaret Cho recounts the fatphobia and other drama around her 1994 comedy <em>All American Girl </em>— but also those consuming the media, meaning the rest of us.</p><p><center><object width="416" height="374" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/S5pM1fW6hNs?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="416" height="374" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/S5pM1fW6hNs?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></center></p><p>Now, I know that both shows are, respectively, very much Black Studies and Women’s Studies 101, presented as and for those who may know very little to nothing about either Black tech innovators and owners or media literacy and feminism. So, I can see both try to provide a “hook” for their audiences with that in mind. However, the way their respective <em></em>creative teams frame their stories does both topics a disservice.</p><p>When I asked O’Brien about the aim of this installment at a preview screening, she said, “First of all, [Blacks] are clearly using the technology, but we&#8217;re not innovating the technology. And Silicon Valley keeps saying how colorblind it is. So, this part of the series examines that statement.”</p><p>Watching <em>BiA4</em>, I felt like I was watching O’Brien trying to mash a news report with a reality show. (“Watch what happens when tech-y Black folks get real…with Soledad O’Brien!”) I can understand that the NewME Accelerator was a good (and, from a seeing-news-as-a-business standpoint, a fiscally feasible way) for CNN to gather a group of Black tech business owners (and the non-Black people who attempt to help and/or comment on them) to tell a relatable narrative about the dearth of Black people in the field.  (<em>BiA4</em> states early on that less than 1% of digital entrepreneurs are Black. The majority, it says, are white, young, Ivy League and first-tier university drop-outs, which, as pointed out in the post-screening Q&amp;A screening I attended, is a privilege unto itself as far as starting businesses.) But I actually think a better way to tell both stories is to decouple them. If I could reconstruct the story, I would have had O’Brien, say, follow one or two Black digital entrepreneurs in depth as they attempted to get investors and utilized Benton and Sutton as pundits— along with angel investor/philanthropist <a title="Mitchell Kapor Foundation" href="http://mkf.org/about/index.html">Mitch Kapor</a>, who directly refutes <a title="Race + Tech: Michael Arrington Can’t Ctrl-Alt-Delete His Foot From His Mouth" href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/11/02/race-tech-michael-arrington-cant-ctrl-alt-delete-his-foot-from-his-mouth/">Michael Arrington’s claim of the digital ownership as “meritorious.”</a> Or I would have followed the NewME Accelerator crew as the main subjects of a full-length documentary to air on CNN.</p><p>Also, another questionable point is how Asians and Asian Americans are considered in this report. The show starts off by saying that the tech-innovation worlds are “white and Asian.” Though the presence of Asians and Asian Americans should not lead to Arrington’s erroneous conclusion that the tech world is, therefore, “colorblind,” the presence of Asian and Asian Americans shouldn’t be discounted as failing to bring racial diversity to tech communities. The more subtle equation <em>BiA4</em> makes, however, is “Black=racial diversity.”</p><p>At least <em>BiA4</em> addresses, albeit imperfectly, race and racism in the tech field, <em>Miss Representation</em> — for all of the visually racial diversity (you see Cho, former Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice, <em>Dreamworlds </em>director Sut Jhally, media-literacy advocate Malkia Cyril, and Newark, NJ mayor Cory Booker, among others) — fails to talk about the issue of race and racism. When I asked why at a post-screening Q&amp;A, the response was “We only had 90 minutes, though we&#8217;re planning a second movie to deal with race.” (Refer to image at top of this post.)</p><p>However, there were places in the film where race and racism could be mentioned, and it would have taken about 30 seconds. For example, a young Black woman talks about her hair and how media images make her feel about it. The narrator could easily say something like, “Far too many images we see in the media are of white women swinging long, flowing hair. Imagine how that would make a woman of color, whose hair may not do that, feel?”</p><p>I timed it: the quote took all of 15 seconds to read out loud. (I’ll be generous and give it about 30 seconds to account for dramatic voiceover.) Or even acknowledge that the majority of media images—both in the film and in entertainment itself, from news to shows to porn—are mostly of white women as both idealized and in variety of roles…and these are, quite a bit of the time, functioning in tandem. Again, all of a thirty-second voiceover or a statistic that could be one of many the film uses to further its argument on how the media hurts women and other people. The silence about race (actress Rosario Dawson is the only person who explicitly mentions &#8220;people of color&#8221;) — as well as class, gender identity, sexual identity, and  and physical ability, though the film does give a nod at how the media, especially television, fails to acknowledge women above the age of 35 as an audience or as characters — flattens the documentary’s discussion about women to the category of “woman,” as if female-presenting people all suffer from media images the same way. Since GeekGirlCon is a new convention, if they accept the submission, it has the potential to help set the tone of what kind of panels may appear at future incarnations at the convention.</p></blockquote><p>Our panel was incredibly ambitious; we were promising to cover an impossibly enormous topic (race AND gender in ALL geek communities?) and, after Racialicious Editor-In-Chief Latoya Peterson canceled, we were left with an ironic lack of racial diversity among the panelists (though we were split between Filipina-American and Chinese-American). It took us a bit to get going, but by the end I was pretty pleased with the ground our panel had covered.<br /> <span id="more-18801"></span></p><p>We touched on concepts like privilege, cultural appropriation, racial tourism, exoticism, intersectionality, and turning racism from an out-group attack into an in-group issue. It was a blast, though there were moments of tedium, a la <a href="http://kotaku.com/5854826/im-tired-of-being-a-woman-in-games-im-a-person">Leigh Alexander&#8217;s article</a> about being a person and not just a woman, and it was apparently <a href="http://www.defectivegeeks.com/2011/10/19/feminism-race-culture/">pretty</a> <a href="http://www.gender-focus.com/2011/10/11/geek-girl-con-feminism-race-and-geek-culture/">well-received</a>. It was also, unfortunately, one of the few panels at the Con that had any women of color on stage, so extra props to Regina for having the foresight to organize something like this.</p><p>It&#8217;s no easy feat to put together a huge con, and GGC was extremely well-run. Staff seemed to be in all the right places, everything was orderly, and lines were manageable. As someone who&#8217;s been behind the curtains, this is nothing short of a miracle for a first time effort &#8212; the experience, professionalism, and passion that the organizers poured into the con was palpable. The vast majority of the attendees were very friendly, respectful, and intellectually curious; how else could you explain a line forming 10 minutes early for our panel about race &amp; gender? Overall, I&#8217;m very glad that GGC exists and that this year&#8217;s success guarantees that will be many more to come. However, there were also a few frustrations I encountered over the weekend that could be ameliorated in the future.</p><h2>1) Feminism didn&#8217;t stop with Betty Friedan</h2><p>For the last few years, I&#8217;ve artfully dodged involvement in a number of &#8220;geek feminist&#8221; movements and events because of my severe allergic reaction to second-wave feminism. In my experience, a lot of the rhetoric and discussion at &#8220;women in tech&#8221; events was severely dated and favored an ill-fitting &#8220;pan-woman&#8221; unity over newer goals like a breakdown of the gender binary in general, or acknowledgement of intersectionality issues.</p><p>So, I was sad but unsurprised to discover that several of the panels I attended at GGC followed this pattern. At one panel about how we should be nicer to our fellow girl geeks, the six(!) white female panelists generalized wildly about gendered behavior (&#8220;A lot of men actually…&#8221; &#8220;Women tend to…&#8221;) and casually dropped the phrase &#8220;both genders&#8221; like there weren&#8217;t a number of transgendered individuals in the room. One panelist lamented that there were just so many definitions for feminism, can we all agree on one before we move forward? Another asserted that she had always advocated for a &#8220;Men&#8217;s Studies&#8221; department in college because she didn&#8217;t understand how men worked at all. The concept of privilege went unmentioned. I went to lunch.</p><blockquote><h3><strong>Solutions:</strong></h3><p>Handing everyone a syllabus on modern feminism 101 might not work out, but GGC could make sure that panels &#8212; at least the ones purporting to be about feminism &#8212; are thoughtfully moderated. An even easier fix is to just bring more diverse voices to every table; that way, even if the discussion is still centered in personal-experience-as-general-reality, at least there will be a wider variety of general experiences to draw on and compare.</p></blockquote><h2>2) More diversity requires more nuance</h2><p>I found myself wondering why there were so many women on stage who were talking about feminism when they clearly hadn&#8217;t read anything in the field since the 60s. The answer, I think, is that these were women are accustomed to being on panels about feminism at conventions for no other reason than their willingness to speak up and their gender. At a normal convention, this is incredibly admirable; in a space where even saying the &#8220;F&#8221; word out loud is controversial, there&#8217;s a lot you can accomplish just by sharing your experience as a woman and providing a space where these conversations are accepted.</p><p>At GeekGirlCon, however, some of these conversations come of feeling like Charlie Brown kicking a football that&#8217;s already been removed; the universal support for basic ideas like &#8220;Yes, women should be here and should not be harassed&#8221; renders them a little lackluster as takeaways. If the goal is for GGC to be a space for girl geeks to strategize for other conventions, this standardization of the party line could be useful. Otherwise, the discussions could really stand to be a little more detailed.</p><blockquote><h3><strong>Solutions:</strong></h3><p>Go ahead and take for granted that both the audience and the panelists primarily identify as female, and will be speaking about things from a female perspective. If the panel description no longer says anything meaningful, one could probably be asking more interesting or specific questions. Instead of inviting the usual suspects who do girl power panels at other conventions, GGC should try to coax out new speakers who don&#8217;t have the same preconceived battle lines. I also want to give a shoutout to the Geeky Intersections panel, which did a great job of taking the conversation to the next level.</p></blockquote><h2>3) Think Outside the Panel</h2><p><img class="alignright" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6098/6320740066_2e930df3f2_m.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="160" />In 2008, I co-founded <a href="http://www.roflcon.org/">ROFLCon,</a> a gathering that attempted to cross a fan convention with an academic conference, and we arrived at something totally bizarre and unique by accident: the resulting mix forced our attendees to break their habits and try new things, and to participate in the group experiment that any new con is. We surprised people into being actively engaged attendees.</p><p>For their part, GGC attendees seemed very happy with the format overall. However, a change in pace could help both organizers and attendees think more critically about why and how they come together. One mentioned that, for all the talk about the need for professional geek women to connect, it would have been nice to have a mixer aimed at doing just that. Likewise, if one of the goals of the merchandise hall is to highlight the work of marginalized content creators, why not curate that content into a show?</p><blockquote><h3><strong>Solutions:</strong></h3><p>I hope that the organizers will take more time next year to write down all of their goals for the con, big and small, and figure out what kind of events and activities best further them. Whenever possible, figure out how to turn a panel into something more engaging.</p></blockquote><h2>4) Who, exactly, is a geek?</h2><p><img class="alignleft" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6214/6320740068_e58399b7ee_m.jpg" alt="" width="180" height="240" />For a long time, the word &#8220;geek&#8221; implied a group of people who were rejected by the mainstream for their interest in weird subcultures. But in an age when superstar rapper Nicki Minaj name-checks <em>Street Fighter</em> characters and streetwear brands team up with comic-book companies like <a href="http://marvel.com/images/gallery/gallery/105/tokidoki_x_marvel_apparel">Marvel</a> and <a href="http://www.geekologie.com/2011/06/exclusive-converse-x-dc-comics-kicks.php">DC,</a> who exactly is the geek referred to in GeekGirlCon? To be a geek, do you have to prefer filk over bounce? Is it a self-identification?</p><p>I ask these questions because I&#8217;m legitimately curious; if fandom is the uniting factor, then the increasingly diverse audiences for all of our favorite geek media (video games, sci-fi, comics, etc.) should be offered a place at conventions like GGC. If, in fact, geekdom here is actually defined by a set of social norms and practices (or the lack thereof) that just happens to coincide with fandom, then geek communities need to have some serious internal conversations and own up to that.</p><p>In general, it all boils down to one thing: the obviously talented GGC organizers focusing their efforts and being more explicit and proactive with their curation. Is it a place for geeky women to meet each other and support female content creators? Does it seek to replicate a normal geek convention in all except the gender ratio? What type of geek is the real intended audience?</p><p><img class="alignright" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6037/6320740078_0a0aedd614_m.jpg" alt="" width="160" height="240" />To end on a positive note, easily my favorite part of the convention was watching its youngest attendees, the actual little girls happily dressed up as their favorite characters. One four-year-old explained to me that she was &#8220;Princess Leia … from the FOURTH <em>Star Wars</em>&#8221; and confided that she was still really scared of stormtroopers. Another little girl, pictured above, pushed a cardboard cutout of <em>Doctor Who</em>&#8216;s Amy Pond over in an apparent bid to become the series&#8217; next companion. Well, this year, Ohio University’s Students Teaching about Racism in Society (STARS) put on posters what we’ve been putting into words <a title="On Cultural Appropriation Halloween and Beyond" href="http://www.racialicious.com/2008/11/14/on-cultural-appropriation-halloween-and-beyond/">for</a> <a title="Reasons Why I Hate Halloween" href="http://www.racialicious.com/2007/10/30/reasons-i-hate-halloween/">quite a while</a>.</p><p>I think that, for the most part, the campaign deserves the accolades, coverage, and support it’s been getting around the web, from <a title="We're a Culture Not a Costume" href="http://blog.angryasianman.com/2011/10/were-costume-not-culture.html">Angry Asian Man</a> to the <a title="I'm Glad Everyone Likes the STARS Campaign" href="http://saucy-sarah.tumblr.com/post/11738327654/im-glad-everyone-likes-our-poster-campaign">17,575 (and counting!) responses on the STARS president’s Tumblr</a> to <a title="Stop Racist Halloween Costumes" href="http://www.theroot.com/views/stop-racist-halloween-costumes">The Root</a> to <a title="Don't Mess Up As You Dress Up" href="http://bitchmagazine.org/post/costume-cultural-appropriation">Bitch</a> to the former <a title="Carmen Sognonvi's STARS support tweet" href="http://twitter.com/#!/carmensognonvi/status/129267713813135362">Racialicious owner Carmen Sognonvi </a>.</p><p>Of course, we can argue, among other things, that phenotypes don’t equal culture and cultures aren’t static or even talk about the <a title="Samhain wiki" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samhain">historical-religious appropriation of Halloween itself</a>.</p><p>My only quibble with the campaign is that I may have chosen photos where the models conveyed different body language. Not that the models didn’t pose how they wanted, being a student-driven campaign. What I do think is quite a few photographers rarely get The Shot in one shot; in fact, several photographers submit several photos for clients/collaborative partners to choose from.</p><p><span id="more-18729"></span></p><p>I would have chosen, say, the Latino looking down at the photo, the East Asian woman giving the “geisha” picture the side-eye. Or all of the models giving their respective photos the side-eye. Or all of them looking out at the viewer. Or all of them looking down. Just a thought if and when STARS decides to tweak this incredible campaign.</p><p>But, again, that’s my only quibble. STARS did a wild-applause-and-rose-tossing job with this campaign.</p><p>Others, however, have taken this serious and timely message and parodied—if not downright attacked&#8211;it. (Color me unshocked by this, Racializens.) Now, some of the parodies made me chuckle, like this <em>Avatar</em>-based one</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/31/missed-representations-part-one-%e2%80%9ci%e2%80%99m-a-culture-not-a-costume%e2%80%9d-campaign/icnc-avatar/" rel="attachment wp-att-18736"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18736" title="ICNC Avatar" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ICNC-Avatar-200x300.png" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a></p><p>and the zombie one</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/31/missed-representations-part-one-%e2%80%9ci%e2%80%99m-a-culture-not-a-costume%e2%80%9d-campaign/icnc-zombie/" rel="attachment wp-att-18737"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18737" title="ICNC Zombie" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ICNC-Zombie-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a></p><p>mostly due to the ideas of the creatures being <a title="Race, Oppression, and the Zombie" href="http://books.google.com/books?id=x5Xt50f7HZ0C&amp;pg=PA122&amp;lpg=PA122&amp;dq=zombies+as+people+of+color&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=C265TETRw0&amp;sig=ZLcEP_ObQTBujleQCTZdBIHNZ_o&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=XLSuTproGcLg0QGR0J2eDw&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=3&amp;ved=0CCwQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&amp;q=zombies%20as%20people%20of%20color&amp;f=false">symbols</a> for <a title="The Messiah Complex" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/08/opinion/08brooks.html">people of color</a>.</p><p>The ones about white people, especially poor whites, produced mixed results mostly because the parodies don’t quite grasp that, yes, poor white people do have a <a title="Go After the Privilege Not the Tits" href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/03/24/go-after-the-privilege-not-the-tits-afterthoughts-on-alexandra-wallace-and-white-female-privilege/">mitigated privilege</a> via their skin color and that white people of various class standings making fun of poor whites may be viewed as “inside joking,”</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/31/missed-representations-part-one-%e2%80%9ci%e2%80%99m-a-culture-not-a-costume%e2%80%9d-campaign/icnc-poor-white-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-18739"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18739" title="ICNC Poor White 2" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ICNC-Poor-White-2-300x224.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="224" /></a></p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/31/missed-representations-part-one-%e2%80%9ci%e2%80%99m-a-culture-not-a-costume%e2%80%9d-campaign/icnc-pilgrim/" rel="attachment wp-att-18741"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18741" title="ICNC Pilgrim" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ICNC-Pilgrim-255x300.png" alt="" width="255" height="300" /></a></p><p>but white poverty is also thoroughly ridiculed and dismissed—and, therefore erased&#8211;in US society by that very same mitigated privilege.</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/31/missed-representations-part-one-%e2%80%9ci%e2%80%99m-a-culture-not-a-costume%e2%80%9d-campaign/icnc-poor-white-3/" rel="attachment wp-att-18740"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18740" title="ICNC Poor White" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ICNC-Poor-White1-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a></p><p>Oh, and let’s not forget the sexism and the fatphobia in these parodies.</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/31/missed-representations-part-one-%e2%80%9ci%e2%80%99m-a-culture-not-a-costume%e2%80%9d-campaign/icnc-stripper/" rel="attachment wp-att-18743"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18743" title="ICNC Stripper" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ICNC-Stripper-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a></p><p>As we’ve witnessed in our posts about racism in costuming, people have rushed to defend their choice to dress up in racially offensive Halloween garb in some of the comment sections about the campaigns, with the usual mixture of the “I got my rights!”, “my best [insert race and/or ethnicity here] friend/partner/co-worker/neighbor didn’t find my costume offensive,” (bonus points if the person saying this is a person of color wears the stereotyping costume of a PoC culture), “y’all are being oversensitive/overemotional/hostile,” “you’re the racist for calling out my racism,” and other derailing techniques.</p><p>Some of the Derailing/Apologist/Other-Blaming hits and remixes?</p><p>From &#8220;Jerry Stein&#8221; at <a title="I'm a Culture Not a Costume Campaign" href="http://www.autostraddle.com/im-a-culture-not-a-costume-campaign-stars-halloween-2011-118271/">Autostraddle</a></p><blockquote><p>OMG, get a life. This is pathetic. Would an Asian woman be OK to go as a Geisha on Halloween? If not why not? And if so are we now saying that only people of the exact origin or race can have fun dressed as a CHARACTER on Halloween? Stop being so sensitive. If America is to get passed all of this nonsense then it needs to get some perspective and start smiling again.</p><p>Watch any movie or TV show and you will see a racial stereotype. Are all stereotypes negative NO! Why is it that this campaign only sees that.</p><p>This country is dividing itself. Nobody wants to be American. Everyone is so narcissistic and self important it makes me sick to my stomach. Bring back people with humility and a sense of humor before we all end up selfish deluded idiots thinking the world owes them something.</p><p>Based on this all costumes which feature Cowboys, Irish Leprechauns, Michael Jackson, Lady GaGa, Bin Laden, OJ Simpson, Madonna, Jersey Shore cast members will all now be banned because they offend the Irish, African Americans, Italians and Muslims. There are tons to Amber Cole &#8211; people saying <a href="http://jezebel.com/5853116/i-am-amber-coles-father">they could be her father</a>, people saying <a href="http://www.amptoons.com/blog/2011/10/26/no-you-arent-amber-coles-father/">STFU with all that victim-blaming and feminist-scapegoating madness</a> &#8211; but no one seems interested in writing letters to the boys involved.</p><p>But hey, maybe it&#8217;s just me.  I guess when one of your friends &#8211; along with a person who sexually assaulted you &#8211; <a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2008/12/21/original-essay-the-not-rape-epidemic/">ends up in jail for gang rape, </a> you start thinking about things a bit differently.</p><p>After I wrote the Not Rape Epidemic, right after I submitted the essay, but before it was actually published, I ran into an old friend at my local library.  I hadn&#8217;t seen this friend in a decade &#8211; indeed, I didn&#8217;t remember her name until I left the library. Yet somehow, we both happened to be in the same library, at the same time, on the same day, after not seeing each other for ten years.  We say hey, make small talk.</p><p>And then she asks me: &#8220;Did you know T got out?&#8221;</p><p>We both were silent for a second.  We hadn&#8217;t talked since before the incident.  She didn&#8217;t know that I had been to that trial.  She didn&#8217;t know I had seen the girl.  And I had forgotten she was far closer to him than I was.  When T and the other kids were sentenced, we calculated they would get out when we were in our 30s or 40s.  We didn&#8217;t realize how the system works, and how a lot of people end up released early.  T had been incarcerated from age 14 to about age 24.</p><p>&#8220;His sister called me,&#8221; my friend continued.  &#8220;She asked me if I wanted to come to his his welcome home party.&#8221;  She looked at me, stared hard so I could feel the weight of her pain.</p><p>&#8220;How am I supposed to look at him after he did something like that?&#8221;<span id="more-18673"></span></p><p>Folks have been largely silent on the role of boys and men in all this.  Who, exactly, taught this young kid that the right way to treat a girl who likes him is to ask her to perform a sex act in public? (If the rumors are to be believed, she was attempting to win his affection.) Who taught the boy with the camera that they could video record sex acts and upload them to the internet without consent of the principals?  Who the hell is the third kid who is just watching?  Why is he hanging around while this is happening? Is anyone concerned that the things these boys learned, either explicitly from their peers or implicitly from society?  That these actions<a href="http://globalgrind.com/news/amber-cole-video-culprits-arrested-teens-involved-ex-boyfriend-photo"> got two of them arrested</a>? Started them down the pipeline for incarceration?  May have them branded as a sexual offenders for the rest of their days?</p><p>Oh, but that&#8217;s cool right?</p><p>When Jimi Izrael writes:</p><blockquote><p>I am Amber Cole&#8217;s father and this should go with saying: I am angry with those boys. But I knew those boys. Those boys were my friends. I grew up with those boys, hung out with those boys.</p></blockquote><p>He writes that he is the other guy.  But there are no other guys.  My friend didn&#8217;t have problems with gathering female attention.  He didn&#8217;t seem like the type to do something like a brutal gang rape ending in sodomy.  And, if what I knew about his personality wasn&#8217;t completely wrong, he probably did not participate. But he was there.  He watched.  He did not help this girl, being beaten bloody by one of his friends.  He didn&#8217;t stop the act.  Maybe he tried to intervene, maybe he didn&#8217;t &#8211; I don&#8217;t know, he had already been tried and sentenced.  But he was there.  And he left with the other perpetrators.  That&#8217;s why they have accessory charges.</p><p>And that&#8217;s why I don&#8217;t want to think about him, and that&#8217;s why my friend didn&#8217;t want to look him in the face.  Because he was there and said nothing.</p><p>Our culture teaches boys that this is okay.  That it is okay to use people.  That you are expected to disregard a woman&#8217;s feelings, to do what you want with her, to find women who are pliable who you can mold, who will seek your favor and happily trade a few moments on her knees for her affection.  Our society teaches boys that this is ok, that this is what you do with women.  The onus is on women not to be used.  Men do not hear &#8220;don&#8217;t be an abuser&#8221; in the same way men don&#8217;t hear &#8220;don&#8217;t be a rapist.&#8221;  The onus is always on women keeping themselves safe, on women not putting themselves in positions to be attacked or exploited.  And when something does happen, when teenagers being teenagers suddenly becomes a nation newsstory, everyone wants to talk about what the girl should have done to prevent herself from being in the situation.</p><p>Once again, we aren&#8217;t talking to the boys.</p><p>So if the boys don&#8217;t know what is wrong, or why what they did was wrong, they will never know.  Because we don&#8217;t talk to boys in that way.  We want them to muddle through on their own, we allow them to consume messages that say the path to proving your masculinity lies in dominance, in the subjugation of women for sexual means.  Because that&#8217;s all this really is. A boy, thinking he could be seen as cool, if he could get this girl to do this thing while his friends watched. A girl, thinking she could win this boy, by doing this thing, not realizing this wasn&#8217;t a game she could ever win.</p><p>We talk about the school to prison pipeline.  We don&#8217;t talk about this.</p><p>We don&#8217;t tell boys what they learned is wrong.  So we shouldn&#8217;t be surprised if they repeat the behavior, if that behavior becomes habit. We tell them, in our actions and words, that this was okay.  Because there&#8217;s little outrage directed at these boys. We don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s going on with these boys. Since when does hetero-normative white society become the victim?</p><p>The show centers around quirky and optimistic Leslie Knop, who is devoted to her job at a local government office in Pawnee, Ind. Alongside her is department head Ron Swanson, a sarcastic-yet-lovable nature lover played as a hipster Alpha male. His<br /> Libertarian political philosophy is the foundation of the show’s sarcasm towards big government.</p><p>In the episode <a href="http://www.hulu.com/watch/285097/parks-and-recreation-pawnee-rangers">&#8220;Pawnee Rangers,&#8221;</a> Leslie is troop leader of the Pawnee Goddesses. They host fun activities; they eat candy and have puppy parties. Ron’s Pawnee Rangers is an outdoors club that’s really out there “roughing it.” They are the kind of boy scouts that dig their own trenches, live in boxes and eat food from a can. In this episode, everyone learns a lesson about equality during wilderness weekend.<br /> <span id="more-18606"></span></p><p>It all begins when out of pure lack of fun one of Ron’s rangers goes to the Goddesses, asking to join their club. Leslie turns him down. The irony is that Leslie started the Pawnee Goddesses because Pawnee Rangers didn’t accept girls. The Younger Goddesses protest, referencing the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_v._Board_of_Education">Brown v Board of Education</a> Supreme Court decision in hopes of getting Leslie to change her mind.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6107/6265343597_7d32a944cd_m.jpg" class="alignright" width="240" height="156" />During the group forum, a young white girl Abigail says to Leslie, “Isn’t it like <em>Brown v Board of Education?</em> Separate but equal is never really equal. We should let the boys in” Casey, a young black girl responds, “I disagree. I think there is a benefit to educating the genders separately.” Casey, of course, is a very conscious decision on the part of the writers. Her words constitute the only non-white voice in the whole debate.</p><p>Leslie, in a &#8220;talking-head&#8221; interview segment, playfully dismisses the two well-articulated points made by the girls, essentially avoiding the issues of gender and race presented, a signature move for the show. Although the show rarely devotes a whole episode to social inequality or “isms,” there are always hints of these issues. The show’s eccentric humor helps mask the politically aware and socially conscious undertones found though out the show.</p><p>As I was watching this episode, I couldn’t help but think about how the social movements today evoke the civil rights movements in their agenda. An extreme case is the debate surrounding the <a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/13/theyre-going-to-laugh-at-you-white-women-betrayal-and-the-n-word">Slutwalk</a> movement, when some demonstrators tried to call upon black oppression to stress their point. These connections have also been made in the gay community, as some have compared racial prejudice <a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2008-12-07/news/0812060439_1_gay-marriage-gay-rights-gay-activists">with anti-gay sentiment.</a> In this particular context, <em>Parks and Recreation</em> represents the growing trend of mainstream media commercializing and claiming a stake in the civil rights movement.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6224/6265343601_de6c6c559c_m.jpg" class="alignleft" width="240" height="179" />In Pawnee, equality is brought by the <em>Brown</em> decision and exhibited through the female Pawnee Godesses. The main goal is to bring equality to the male Rangers, which eventually emasculates the hyper-masculine Ron. Once he loses his Rangers, he can no longer “Be a Man” &#8211; a statement, which as we learn in the beginning, is the only rule in the Pawnee Ranger guidebook.</p><p>Considering how Ron&#8217;s &#8220;plight&#8221; was portrayed, it begs the question: how can mainstream movements that call for social and political equality such as the recent feminist and anti-capitalist demonstrations relate to the fights, struggles and victories of non-white communities without offending, devaluing or co-opting them?</p><p>Pawnee’s wilderness weekend slightly complicates and humors the idea of equality. Lately, there’s been a rash of White women using the n-word – including self-professed liberals and progressives. As if that were not bad enough, they act shocked, defensive and even downright nasty when told by women of all races that they should cut that shit out.</p><p>First example: a few White women made and carried signs that stated <em>Woman Is the N***** of the World</em> for Slut Walk in New York City on October 1<sup>st</sup>. (<em>We found out it was two women carrying the same sign.&#8211;Ed.</em>)</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/13/theyre-going-to-laugh-at-you-white-women-betrayal-and-the-n-word/slutwalk-sign-1a/" rel="attachment wp-att-18485"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-18485" title="SlutWalk Sign 1a" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/SlutWalk-Sign-1a.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></p><p>While some White women <a href="http://slutwalknyc.com/post/11198191308/to-our-community-we-are-responding-to-the-outcry">including those among Slut Walk NYC&#8217;s organizers and participants</a> have stepped up to condemn these actions, there are too many who have come to their defense, ranging from the naively privileged to the unapologetically hostile. I’m talking Facebook posts such as, “It is NOT racist, and anybody who thinks so is a fucking idiot” to a White woman telling an African American woman to go fuck herself. (I’d post links, but in no surprise to me, the posts have conveniently disappeared.)<br /> <span id="more-18483"></span></p><p>A few days later, Barbara Walters used the word and then played victim when told by her <em>The View</em> co-host Sherri Shepherd that she was hurt by it. Acting as if her journalistic integrity was called into question instead of hearing the pain of her so-called friend, Walters exploited Shepherd’s struggle to concretize her discomfort with Walters’s use of the word and attempted to make Shepherd feel unreasonable for taking offense. (I’ll save my musings on why Walters will never have a woman of color – least of all a woman of African descent – who is capable and willing to hand her ass to her on <em>The View</em> for another time.)</p><p><object width="560" height="315" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_Awde0Km4oc?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="560" height="315" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_Awde0Km4oc?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p><p>Then last night I learned that at Occupy Philadelphia, two Black women were called n****** by volunteers. Now the actual details of the incident remain sketchy, but from what I understand, the fact that these women were slurred is not in dispute. <a href="http://blogs.philadelphiaweekly.com/phillynow/2011/10/11/black-activist-points-out-occupy-phillys-racial-disconnect/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=black-activist-points-out-occupy-phillys-racial-disconnect">Apparently, charges of racism against the organizing group predated the incident.</a></p><p>Many women of all races such as <a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/stephanie-gilmore/some-initial-thoughts-on-racism-and-the-absence-of-reflexivity-in-movements-that/10150322242639607">Stephanie Gilmore</a>, <a title="An Open Letter to SlutWalk" href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/sydette-harry/an-open-letter-to-slutwalk/10150413913020937">Sydette Harry</a>, and the <a href="http://crunkfeministcollective.wordpress.com/2011/10/06/i-saw-the-sign-but-did-we-really-need-a-sign-slutwalk-and-racism/">Crunk Feminist Collective</a> have issued thorough, incisive and poignant analyses as to why it is never appropriate for a self-proclaimed White feminist ally to use this racial slur. There is little more I can add to the substance of these and other responses already made. Still I have a compelling desire (which I will hereinto unapologetically indulge) to contribute to the discussion by making an attempt to make White women perpetrators and their apologists viscerally understand what exactly is the impact of their use of the n-word.</p><p>Warning: it ain’t going to be diplomatic or pretty because we’re already far past that.</p><p>So to all the White women who think it’s cool to use the n-word, y’all seen the movie <em>Carrie</em>, right? Recall the pivotal scene where Carrie White’s nemesis Chris and her boyfriend Billy dump a bucket of pig’s blood on her. Before Carrie telekinetically wrecks shop, she stands there drenched in blood and humiliation as people laugh at her.</p><p><object width="420" height="315" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5nV_0oQDiRA?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="420" height="315" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5nV_0oQDiRA?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p><p>That’s how that shit feels when you use the n-word.</p><p>We’re Carrie White and you’re Chris Hargensen except Chris never fronted like she was Carrie’s friend.</p><p>A few of your apologists are Sue Snell, perhaps well-meaning but ultimately ineffectual and forever haunted by the damaged to feminist solidarity that you have caused.</p><p>But your most virulent apologists are bunch of Billy Nolans who pick up the havoc where you left.</p><p>Your use of the n-word is a huge bucket of pig&#8217;s blood. When you use it and defend yourself, you’re Chris licking her lips as she pulls the cord. It’s a betrayal, plain and simple.</p><p>Stop with the defensiveness and rationalizations for just a minute and sit with that. If you&#8217;re really &#8217;bout it, just accept that already. Recognize that the mere ability to dig your heels in &#8211; telling us we don&#8217;t get it, defending your honor like some damsel in distress (by the way, how are you OK with pulling the most anti-feminist of anti-feminist shticks), etc. &#8211; wouldn&#8217;t exist without the racial privilege you think is somehow neatly tucked away in the folds of your gender identity. You really can’t get whiter than that.</p><p>And guess what? Recasting Black women who call you out as the threat to whatever image you have constructed of yourself got you looking really patriarchal right about now. You’re doing to Black women what men of all races to do to us all the time.</p><p>It’s a betrayal when you act as if you have no clue in 2011 about what feminists of color endure within our own community when we make the decision to trust in and build with White feminists. Patriarchal men and women of color are like Piper Laurie, doing everything to derail us whenever we align ourselves with you. When we throw on our jackets to head out to the meeting, they stand at the top of the stairs yelling, “They’re going to laugh at you.”</p><p>We have faith and show up anyway only for you to pull the cord on prom night.</p><p>(<em>Side note to those anti-feminist people of color: now isn’t the time for you to say, “I told you so.” That’s when you go from acting like Carrie’s mother to making like her gym teacher. Instead of joining the laughter, you should be standing with us as we call out the racism rather than using it as an opportunity to gut check us on our feminism. Don’t bother if for no other reason than it’s just not going to work for you. All you do when you attempt to discredit feminism by throwing an instance of racist arrogance of certain White women in our face is play yourself. We’re just not that fickle. With few exception, we’re not going to come “home” like the prodigal Carrie White because, as you&#8217;ll recall, her mother pretended to comfort her only to literally stabbed her in the back. Yeah, we&#8217;re not playin&#8217; that.)</em></p><p>Now back to you n-word loving White women. You want to show how hip you are? Stop listening to Yoko Ono and Kreayshawn and read a book, read a book, read a MF book. Preferably one by a Black feminist such as Audre Lorde or bell hooks. One course in an entire women’s studies program doesn’t cut it.</p><p>What to show how down you are? Quit with the silly references to hip hop culture as some kind of permission. As mad as we may be at you, even we don’t believe you’re that dumb. You especially denigrate yourself with that one so stop it.</p><p>To all you Sue Snells, when women associated with your movements (&#8217;cause that&#8217;s what it&#8217;s looking like right about now &#8211; YOUR movements &#8212; now matter how many invitations you extend) tell women of color to go fuck themselves, call us idiots for taking offense, say they’re sorry <em>if we’re offended</em> as if our feelings are the problem and not the actions that triggered them and other such nonsense, how &#8217;bout You. Just. Check. Them. Despite all the historic and ongoing treatment of men of color as menaces to White womanhood, feminists of color usually have no problem pulling a brother’s coattails when he comes for you, but y’all kinda drag your feet when a White woman does the same to us or our men. And that high school tactic of pleading, “It wasn’t me” doesn’t suffice. I don’t mean to get all vanguardist on y’all, but how about you bench these chicks when they come out of pocket? Seriously, where is the discipline in this movement? I’m not saying to immediately show her the door (although that just might be appropriate on occasion.) Struggle with her if you must, but there has to be serious and immediate consequences for racist behavior even if it’s sending homegirl to an intersectionality boot camp.</p><p>Stop confusing the fact that the n-word is still used by some black folks as license for you to use it. Many women including White feminists still use the word<em>bitch</em>, but I don&#8217;t see you abiding for one second any man thinking he can do the same. In fact, if a man who identified as a feminist and/or ally still had the audacity to roll up to Slut Walk with a sign that read <em>Rape is for Pussies</em>, all his professions to solidarity, insistence that we focus on the “real” issue and the like wouldn’t have zilch currency for you so don’t act brand new.</p><p>And while we’re on the subject of Black folks who embrace the n-word, I don’t give a damn how many Black friends you have who don’t blink an eye or even think it’s cute when that word comes out of your mouth. You still don’t and never will have license to use that word. Accept that. If you can&#8217;t stop insisting that you be allowed to use the n-word on philosophical grounds, how &#8217;bout you just let it go on the simple fact that <em>you will never win this one</em>. Trust me on that. If any woman of color &#8211; friend, comrade, stranger &#8212; tells you it is offensive to her, the only right answer of a true ally is to knock it off. This mounting any never mind excessive defense of the use of the n-word by you or any other White person then turning around and complaining that our expressing our hurt and anger is a distraction from the &#8220;real&#8221; issue at hand&#8230; how&#8217;s that working for you? It isn&#8217;t, and you know it.</p><p>And you know why despite your Cool White Chick status you weren’t at the meeting when your Black BFF was elected representative-at-large for the United Black Diaspora? It&#8217;s because the election never took place and that organization doesn’t exist. They never did and even if they ever were to, despite your CWC bona fides, you still wouldn’t be invited. Trust me on that one, too. Until we make some meaningful progress in defeating racism, White anti-racists have their own lane. You truly want to be an ally? Stay in it.</p><p>Yes, this is harsh, but in addition to being furious at the recent number of White women who think they can use this word and still front like they are our friends, I’ve been spoiled. I have meaningful relationships with White feminists who get it, and they have set the bar high. Are they perfect? No. But unlike you, they listen. Perhaps that’s why you avoid them like the plague. Her response in her final post on the thread was to tell me to &#8220;go fuck yourself.&#8221; (After the call to archive the thread, said organizer removed her comments from it. However, Sydette Harry, the thread&#8217;s moderator and author of the original post called &#8220;Open Letter to SlutWalk,&#8221; assures us she&#8217;s got screencaps of her comments.) During this&#8211;except for a very few&#8211;those white feminists who profess to be anti-racist remained publicly silent even as us women of color kept asking, &#8220;Why aren&#8217;t the white anti-racist feminists saying something publicly about all of this??&#8221;</em></p><p><em>Jake <a title="SlutWalk USA Thread on Aishah Simmons post re: SWNYC sign" href="https://www.facebook.com/SlutWalkUSA/posts/131614266939205">posted her thoughts about the sign and the continued racialfail</a> at <a title="SlutWalk USA" href="https://www.facebook.com/SlutWalkUSA">SlutWalk USA</a>, which is not affiliated to the pages of official SlutWalks. </em></p><blockquote><p> &#8221;Using the &#8220;N&#8221; word in this context may or may not be appropriate. Crunk Feminist Collective made this clarion call: </em></p><blockquote><p>&#8220;Calling all anti-racist allies: It has unfortunately come to our attention that the creator of the SlutWalk USA FB page is making racist comments in the discussion that follows its link to Aishah Shahidah Simmons Cultural Worker&#8217;s piece about the unfortunate racism at last week&#8217;s SlutWalk NYC. While we would be perfectly happy to go get #CRUNK with this clearly misguided individual, this is the time for our anti-racist allies to step up and do some of the labor of teaching this person where and how their thinking is so ridiculously, offensively, and dangerously wrong. We also hope that organizers of various SlutWalks will officially condemn this page. If you have time and energy on your Sunday, your labor of anti-racist love in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks from the CFs.&#8221;</p></blockquote><p><em>Several white anti-racist feminists responded on SlutWalk USA&#8217;s thread. Stephanie, who took part of SlutWalk Philly, went a step further and wrote this response, not only answering the question &#8220;where are the white anti-racist feminists?&#8221; but also answering Jake, who claimed to be speaking for/with her.</em></p><p><em>The essay, after the jump&#8211;AJP</em></p><p><span id="more-18370"></span> 1.</p><p>On September 21, 2011, I joined hundreds of my friends and millions of people around the world to watch, through tears and in abject horror, as Troy Anthony Davis was executed by the State of Georgia. In the twenty years between Davis’ trial for the murder of police officer Mark McPhail and his execution, Davis maintained his innocence while witnesses recanted the testimony that sent Davis to death row. Despite conflicting testimonies and inadequate evidence, the state put aside lingering and longstanding doubt and instead, put Troy Anthony Davis to death.</p><p>On Facebook, Twitter, and other media outlets, I saw virtual and real friends declare that “I am Troy Davis.” They changed their profile pictures to a picture or image of Davis, or a black box, all in an attempt to articulate a sense of solidarity, a stand against the injustice of the prison industrial complex and a state thoroughly entrenched in the murder of a man who may not have committed the crime of murder. I agree wholeheartedly that the state was wrong in executing Mr. Davis and I grieve for his death as well as that of Officer McPhail. But in the weeks since Davis’s execution, I have been wondering if people really understand how and why Davis came to be murdered at the hands of the state. People insist that “I am Troy Davis,” but what does that mean?</p><p>In many ways, I am not Troy Davis. I am a middle-class, 40-something-year-old white woman. According to a 2008 Pew Center on the States report, one in 36 Hispanic adults is in prison in the United States. One in 15 Black adults is too, a statistic that includes one in 100 Black women and <em>one in nine</em> Black men, age 20-34.  Although one of my parents spent time in prison, and through incarceration joined the swelling ranks of 2.3 million imprisoned people and many more in the system of probation, halfway houses, and parole, I and my white peers do not face systemic racial injustice in the structures of imprisonment. And it does not begin or end with the prison system. Black children are suspended and expelled from school at 3 times the rate of white children. Racial discrimination in funding for education also affects children’s success in school, as cash-poor school districts are also overwhelmingly Black and Latino neighborhoods.  Schools have been and remain a pipeline to prison for many Black and Latino children, and generations of families, prison is a reality. One in 15 Black children currently has a parent in jail. People say that the system is broken, but I (along with others in the prison abolition movement) admit that the system is working exactly as it was set up to do. Can I really say, “I am Troy Davis” without giving serious consideration to the realities of racism in the prison industrial complex? Does that just become little more than the adoption of a slogan and a picture, without a real awareness of the racist realities of the prison industrial complex?</p><p>2.</p><p><a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/11/am-i-troy-davis-a-slut-or-what%e2%80%99s-troubling-me-about-the-absence-of-reflexivity-in-movements-that-proclaim-solidarity/white-privilege-card/" rel="attachment wp-att-18385"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-18385" title="White Privilege Card" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/White-Privilege-Card.jpg" alt="" width="373" height="232" /></a>On August 6, 2011, I joined Slut Walk Philadelphia. It was a beautiful day and hundreds of people moved through Center City to end up at City Hall, where even more gathered to speak out against sexual violence. I had been following Slut Walks with great delight because I see the people power in the sheer numbers of women and men who are fighting back against sexual violence.  So when I was asked to participate, and to stand with queer people of Color in a more racially inclusive Slut Walk than I had seen to date, I said “yes” because the fight to end sexual violence is my fight. And fighting against a culture that perpetuates and promotes rape; cheers on rapists; and diminishes, humiliates, and silences victims through law, education, and entertainment will demands knowledge that the system, again, is not broken. It is doing the very work it was constructed to do – sexual violence is a tool of ensuring white status quo. And if we are to end sexual violence, we must acknowledge how it operates.</p><p>I have struggled to accept a movement that does not acknowledge the very problematic word “slut” and how historically many women have not been able to shake the label of “slut.” I participated in the struggle – the movement as well as my own internal struggle – because I wanted to engage in, create, and sustain dialogue. Indeed, many criticize the apparent move to claim “slut” – how can you pick up something you’ve never been able to put down? Black women have been most vocal about the longer legacy of sexual violence done onto their bodies – often against the backdrop of slavery and colonialism &#8212; simply for being Black. But I continued to push into these bigger conversations and analyses. I listened and engaged when Crunk Feminist Collective challenged Slut Walks, when BlackWomen’s Blueprint issued their “Open Letter from Black Women to Slut Walk Organizers,” and when individual women of Color (and <em>only</em> women of Color) spoke publicly about racist actions within individual marches as well as racism within the larger movement. White women I know made private comments about different expressions of racism, but never spoke up to challenge individual actions or larger frameworks of analysis, leaving me to wonder “why?”</p><p>And then I saw the sign from Slut Walk NYC bearing the words “Women are the N*gger of the World.” I don’t care that the quotation is from John Lennon and Yoko Ono. I don’t care that the woman was asked to take down the sign – although I certainly do care that a woman of Color had to ask her to do so while white women moved around her, seemingly oblivious. I am angry when I continue to see so many white women defending it expressly or remaining complicit in silence, suggesting that “we” (what “we”?) need to focus on sexual violence first, as if it is unrelated to racism. And I wonder, can I really claim to be a part of the nascent Slut Walk movement without giving serious consideration to the realities of racism within very publicly identified facets of it? Can I be a part of it when so many women – my very allies and sisters in antiracist struggle – are set apart from it, or worse, set in perpetual opposition to it?</p><p>3.</p><p>My question is, how can we be in solidarity when we are not willing to be reflexive and to check ourselves, check each other, and be checked? Bernice Johnson Reagon acknowledged that coalition building is hard work, made even harder by people who come to coalition seeking to find a home. My sense, or perhaps one sense I have, is that many people came to the “I Am Troy Davis” momentum or the Slut Walk marches looking for a home, a place where they<a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2011/10/11/am-i-troy-davis-a-slut-or-what%e2%80%99s-troubling-me-about-the-absence-of-reflexivity-in-movements-that-proclaim-solidarity/anti-racism-wristband-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-18401"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-18401" title="Anti-racism Wristband" src="http://www.racialicious.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Anti-racism-Wristband1-300x179.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="179" /></a> can sit back and feel comfortable in their hard (very hard!) work, and comforted by others who pat them on the head and tell them “good job.” This is not to dismiss genuine concern for the state of our world. Perhaps we’re all lonely, as the realities of social justice work have taken on different and palatable forms since WTO and 9/11. So many people are down for the immediate issue – the indefensible execution of Troy Davis, the indefensible perpetuation of sexual violence &#8212; and that matters. But I worry that many white people aren’t paying attention to the larger structures in place. They are not being reflexive about the realities of racism that undergird prison incarceration, death penalty, and sexual violence.</p><p>I am not Troy Davis; I never will be. A system built on the foundation of racism ensures that I will not confront the realities of prison incarceration in the same ways as Black and Latino people. I am a strong advocate against sexual violence, but I cannot fight in and for a movement that is not interested in the realities of racism and the ways that racism undergirds sexual violence, and instead so blindly employs racist language. (The “Occupy Wall Street” actions call for me again the realities of racism and its necessity within the existing structure of capitalism – and the insistence among white people that people of Color indulge a luxury of time and money to sit in with them is untenable and racist. Many others have pointed out that the language of “occupation” is inherently problematic because bodies and lands have been historically occupied, often through sexual violence and criminalization. The movement itself needs to be decolonized.) Even as I support openly the prison abolition movement, the end to sexual violence, and the uprooting of a socioeconomic system that ignores the 99%, I cannot do so without deep awareness of racism that is operating within and among these movements. It is my work as a white activist to speak to and be aware of these legacies and histories of racism. Women and men of Color need not be alone in the front lines of identifying racist action and reaction within the movement. Insisting that people of Color have a voice <em>only </em>when it comes to identifying racism perpetuates, rather than alleviates racism. As I look at the actions of some people within these movements, I am reminded again that the racism of the supposed left is even more damaging and hurtful than the naked racism of the right.</p><p>If we are to work together in solidarity, we must do so reflexively, conscious of our actions and the potential outcomes before we act. This is not a call to focus on criticism and self-reflection to the point that we are inactive. That is unproductive, to be sure. But it is a call to be mindful and vigilant about racist action and reaction, to come to terms with the fact that we must do the work of understanding racist underpinnings of prison incarceration, the death penalty, and sexual violence if we are to make significant progress. Undoing racism must be at the core of our collective work across movements. To echo Dr. Reagon’s statement, we need to be honest and ask if we really want people of Color or if we’re just looking for ourselves with a little color to it. So much of the movement work, as it stands, seems to be looking for a little color, when we need to be exploring the realities of racism as part of the problem, not an additive to the “real” issue. In the absence of reflexivity about the structural forces that are keeping us apart, we will never be able to engage in real coalition work that will be required if we are to take seriously our goals of ending sexual violence and the death penalty. These movements as they are going now may continue, but they will not do so in my name and certainly not without my consent.</p><p>So no, I am not Troy Davis. I am not a slut. I am not an occupier of Wall Street or any street. The fights <em>are </em>my fights, but the current methods and analyses are not mine. I cannot sit by and listen to people debate the efficacy of the death penalty without understanding that it is the larger complex of incarceration and the “elementary-to-penitentiary” path that tracks and traps Black and Latino youth<em>by design</em>. I am done with the handwringing and “white lady tears” of so many white women who keep defending racist approaches and actions and, at times, respond <em>with violence</em> when confronted and challenged. Such behavior only reinforces the fact that these movement spaces as they are currently defined are not safe. My friend, colleague, and sister-in-spirit Aishah Shahidah Simmons said it best when she commented, “It&#8217;s sobering to observe how White solidarity is taking precedence over principled responses&#8230;. &#8221; Sobering, indeed. I will most assuredly fight to end the prison industrial complex, sexual violence, and unbridled capitalism, but I will do so from a space that centers the racist roots of incarceration, criminal “justice,” capitalism, and sexual violence.  Thankfully, those spaces already exist – even if they remain peripheral in the mainstream media (and in much of what is left of the lefty media). But it is time to pivot the center. Louis Vuitton featured cobalt and berry Masai prints for its <a href="http://www.style.com/fashionshows/review/S2012MEN-LVUITTON">S/S 12 menswear show</a> last June, while <a href="http://www.style.com/fashionshows/review/F2011RTW-THAKOON">Thakoon</a> fused Victorian tailoring with traditional East African patterns for F/W 11. Critics unanimously exalted both collections. Nicole Phelps of Style.com hailed Thakoon’s showing as “his freshest, most alive collection in a while,” and The New York Times Magazine proclaimed Louis Vuitton as the <a href="http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/24/scorecard-louis-vuitton-wins-4/">“winner”</a> of Paris Fashion Week for menswear S/S 12, with radiant quotes from SHOWstudio, who hailed the collection as “hugely handsome, confident and clear.”</p><p>Sure, the clothes were beautiful, as they tend to be from practiced and esteemed labels like Louis Vuitton and Thakoon. But the use of African aesthetics for the financial and cultural benefit of the West conjures a host of unanswered questions: Is this practice exploitative? What image of Africa does it create in the West? Should designers give back to the communities from which they benefit?<br /> <span id="more-18048"></span></p><p><div class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 240px"><img alt="" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6159/6187489195_52ef11f226_m.jpg" width="230" height="240" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Picasso&#039;s Les Demoiselles d&#039;Avignon (1907; painting-analysis.blogspot.com)</p></div> Africa has served as inspiration in Western fashion and more expansively, Western visual culture, for decades. In 1907, Pablo Picasso painted two women with African masks for his magnum opus <em>Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.</em> More recently, in 1997, John Galliano featured a series of reinterpreted Masai warrior costumes for his debut couture collection at Dior. More than a decade later, for <a href="http://www.style.com/fashionshows/review/S2009RTW-CDIOR/">Dior’s S/S 09 show,</a> he styled his models with vase-like hair resembling ancient Congolese head dresses. And in a similar vein, Jean Paul Gaultier used African hunter shields, African carvings, the patterns of Masai beading as the inspiration for his <a href="http://www.style.com/fashionshows/review/S2005CTR-JPGAULTI/">Spring 2005 couture</a> collection.</p><p>Fashion critics have largely praised Galliano and Gaultier’s use of African aesthetics in the context of “diversifying fashion.” In a <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2011/06/26/jean-paul-gaultier-retrospective.html">review</a> of <em>The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,</em> a retrospective of Gaultier’s work at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Robin Givhan of The Daily Beast writes: “Gaultier looks outward at the swirl of life that engulfs him. And he is fully and optimistically engaged with it. Gaultier’s multicultural inspiration, which spans the entire breadth of his career, beginning in 1976, reminds us of the beauty of cultural diversity.”</p><p><div class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 250px"><img alt="" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6173/6188010884_9e7a9b1377_m.jpg" width="240" height="219" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Looks from Dior Couture &#039;97</p></div> As a foil to fashion’s praise for using African aesthetics in Western design, art critics have debated the merits of this practice with more skepticism. Arguably the most famous debate arose in response to a show in 1984 at the New York Museum of Modern Art titled, “‘Primitivism in 20th Century Art,” which sought to elucidate the connection between the work of European artists like Gauguin and Picasso with African “tribal” art. The show’s most aggressive critique came a couple of years later from writer Thomas McEvilley whose piece “Doctor Lawyer Indian Chief” in <em>Art Forum,</em> sharply criticized the exhibit’s lack of information and context about the tribal objects:</p><p>“No attempt is made to recover an emic, or inside, sense of what primitive esthetics really were or are… The point of view of Picasso and others… is the only focus of MOMA’s interest… By their absolute repression of primitive context, meaning, content, and intention… [the curators] have treated the primitives as less than human, less than cultural – as shadows of a culture, their selfhood, the Otherness, wrung out of them.”</p><p><em>The New Yorker</em> summarized this argument: “In other words… people of color don’t exist unless whites say they do – and, even then, they exist only as they are seen by whites.”</p><p><div class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 250px"><img alt="" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6159/6187489319_efd241f617_m.jpg" width="240" height="184" /><p class="wp-caption-text">A portrait of Senegalese women from the 50s by Senegalese photographer Seydou Keita (via origidij.blogspot.com)</p></div> Like the aforementioned MoMA exhibit, fashion shows that reference Africa can seem exploitative due to a lack of real connection to African culture or African people. The image of Africa on runways is almost entirely created by Western design teams that convey a shallow knowledge or appreciation for the communities they are referencing. To counter this, if designers want to utilize African culture in a responsible way, it must rethink the way it interacts with Africa itself.</p><p>One way Western designers could convey a deeper appreciation for Africa is by offering adequate historical or cultural context of their designs when they reference aspects of African culture. If Louis Vuitton offered more background information on Masai prints for his S/S 12 show, for example, viewers would have a better idea of what Masai prints signify and how they became so prominent among Masai tribes. The information could be placed in a pamphlet that accompanies the show’s gift bags or sits on each seat in the audience. This, to me, would ameliorate the feeling that the label was exploiting African culture and give the sense that the label was celebrating it.</p><p>Another way fashion could start projecting a more respectful perception of Africa is by incorporating African textiles into their designs. Today, most African-print textiles are manufactured in Europe or Asia – they’re African-inspired, not African. As writer Maya Lau suggests in a Huffington Post piece entitled Senegal’s Accidental Hipsters, the African textile industry is largely foundering in countries like Senegal. Investment in textiles from these countries would 1) feed into the local economy 2) maintain traditional, or at least local, ways of producing textiles, and 3) cultivate a more human relationship between Western fashion and Africa. If Western designers continue to use African prints, sourcing fabric from Africa would give both Westerners and Africans monetary benefits (it would be cheap for Western brands to manufacture in Africa and it would power the African economy) as well as social benefits (it would begin a symbiotic relationship between the West and Africa).</p><p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AMm6SwK9tjk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><p>Yet another way for Western designers to convey a deeper appreciation for Africa is by giving back to the communities from which they borrow. After using Masai prints for his F/W 11 collection, Thakoon has done just this. According to Thakoon.com, the label will donate all proceeds from a particular Limited Edition Masai Plaid Scarf to an international children’s relief organization working to reduce rates of malnutrition in the Horn of Africa – the area where Masai Tribes are located. The donor-benefactor relationship isn’t ideal; however, it is one way for Thakoon to give back to the community that offered him so much for his latest collection.</p><p>The relationship between the West and Africa is long and complicated, and because of this, there are no real answers as to how to create a healthy relationship between Western fashion and Africa. Here, I’ve tried to offer some solutions and have highlighted others that are currently in the works. More than finding the best solution, however, I hope that designers start thinking more critically about their relationship with Africa and the best way for them to face the conflicts inherent in utilizing African designs. and barring him from publishing in non-peer-reviewed outlets for a year.</p><p>In addition to the 12-month ban, he will not teach any compulsory courses this academic year.</p></blockquote><p>Kanazawa issued a very belated fauxpology for his &#8220;research.&#8221;</p><blockquote><p>In a letter to Judith Rees, director of the LSE, Dr Kanazawa says he &#8220;deeply regrets&#8221; the &#8220;unintended consequences&#8221; of the blog and accepts it was an &#8220;error&#8221; to publish it.</p><p>&#8220;In retrospect, I should have been more careful in selecting the title and the language that I used to express my ideas,&#8221; Asian women are not equatable to Asian food. Even if you&#8217;re hungry.<br /> 2. You&#8217;ve cultivated an impressive catalogue of 80&#8242;s war movies. Well done sir. But the sidewalk is not your mother&#8217;s basement and I am not an internet forum. Keep the movie quotes to yourself.<br /> 3. Pop culture references that invariably suggest someone is foreign, submissive/docile, or willing to service you sexually should always be avoided. In other words: find a new fetish.<br /> 4. Seriously, when has anything referencing the Vietnam war ever gotten anyone laid? (Stanley Kubrick, who knew your legacy would be Asian female street harassment?)<br /> 5. If the first thing you think of when you see an Asian woman is &#8220;I should ask her to feed me,&#8221; you should know you&#8217;re not fit for human companionship. Period. Get a rice cooker. It won&#8217;t care if you fetishize it.<br /> 6. This is America; assume the Asian female you&#8217;re chatting with is American.  Talk to her about red vs. blue politics, her favorite type of pie, who is better: Katy Perry or Ke[s]ha, or at the very least, baseball &#8211; not about foods that use chopsticks. Your ability to feed yourself is an accomplishment &#8211; but she doesn&#8217;t need to know that.</p></blockquote><p>Caitlin&#8217;s video was hilarious. I&#8217;ve heard all these stories &#8211; and so much more! &#8211; from my Asian American friends over the years.  And, if I was queen of the airwaves, I&#8217;d have this running as a PSA, along with other notices about street harassment in general.  But there&#8217;s one thing that keeps sticking out in my mind, and it&#8217;s generally the same refrain we hear over and over again when we post abut street harassment: the idea of men watching the vid and going &#8220;What am I supposed to say then?&#8221; (Yeah, just headdesk and move on.)</p><p>I always think about a certain verse on Murs&#8217; &#8220;<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ8bYfbm45A">Dark Skinned White Girls</a>,&#8221; a song that&#8217;s really problematic despite its good intentions. The verse about mixed girls was fairly revealing about the mindset of these kind of guys (emphasis mine):</p><blockquote><p>Now half and half of mixed girls<br /> I know what the battle be<br /> Everytime you go out it&#8217;s &#8220;whats your nationality?&#8221;<br /> Everybody always wanna dig up in ya background<br /> You don&#8217;t look&#8230; now how does that sound?<br /> I couldn&#8217;t tell you were&#8230; oh is that right?<br /> Do you take it as a compliment or start up a fight?<br /> Venezualan and Indian, Rican and Dominican<br /> Japanese or Portuguese, Quarter of Brazilian<br /> White and Korean, Black and Pinay<br /> We&#8217;ll find out later<br /> It don&#8217;t matter, ya fly<br /> <strong>It don&#8217;t really matter to most of us guys<br /> We just need an excuse to get close or say &#8220;hi&#8221;</strong></p></blockquote><p>Somehow, it never seems to matter what the woman likes or appreciates, which is this unexplored dimension of street harassment. If the objection to women protesting street harassment is that we should forgive a man&#8217;s clumsy attempts to pick up a woman he finds attractive, then wouldn&#8217;t not offending a woman be pretty high on that man&#8217;s priority list? But there&#8217;s no way to yell out &#8220;sucky sucky five dollar&#8221; at a woman passing by and <em>not</em> be offensive. So there&#8217;s clearly another motive at play. What is it? According to the Italian fashion outlet, &#8220;Jewellery has always flirted with circular shapes, especially for use in making earrings. <em><strong>The most classic models are the slave and creole styles in gold hoops</strong></em>.”</p><p>Emphasis mine, ridiculousness&#8230; all theirs.</p><p>Two weeks ago, <em>Vogue Italia</em> found itself under a deluge of criticism for declaring “Slave Earrings” in fashion. Originally, they thought to qualify the name they gave them. “If the name brings to the mind the decorative traditions of the women of colour who were brought to the southern United States during the slave trade, the latest interpretation is pure freedom. Colored stones, symbolic pendants and multiple spheres. And the evolution goes on.” Does it go on to declare “necklaces with detachable chains,” “hillbilly slingbacks,” and “Holocaust tattoos” in fashion? None of that is me, by the way, this is taken from the 21 pages of comments, nearly all chiding the wording choice in English and in Italian.</p><p>Allow me to fill you in on the latest: <em>Vogue Italia</em> gave an apology earlier last week that was more like an “Oops!” than anything. The style bible’s editor, Franca Sozzani released a statement Monday that said, “We apologise for the inconvenience. It is a matter of really bad translation from Italian into English.” Again, emphasis mine, but let’s be honest, the emphasis should have been theirs. They continued, “The Italian word, which defines those kind of earrings, should instead be translated into ‘ethnical style earrings.’ Again, we are sorry about this mistake which we have just amended in the website.”</p><p>From the myriad of complaints, tweets, and articles that has inspired this fashion nightmare, it was pointed out the word “ethnic” translates to “etnico” and slave is “schiavo” in Italian. Completely dissimilar words.  So obviously, Sozzani’s statement needs to be taken with a&#8230; grain of salt. My thought is, in the surprise this wording&#8230; mistake&#8230; caused, they had to say something. Like equate ethnicity to slavery. Oops! I think Iman said it best <a href="http://www.stylebistro.com/Daily+Dish/articles/2sF-L8kM2nz/Iman+Vogue+Italia+Infamous+Slave+Earrings">to Style Bistro</a>: “Slave does not make it ethnic. Mind you, it’s not lost in translation–the word slave, we know what it is. They might as well have called them n***** earrings.” Snap. We should know by now that it’s best not to anger Iman. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYAS92XPvIM">Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannson</a> would be none too pleased, either.</p><p>Really, these earrings do originate from the time of slavery, however&#8230; let me throw out an example. Right now, I’m wearing a Calvin Klein buckled leather bracelet. I am not wearing a Calvin Klein shackle cuff. See the difference, Franca? I know this all may be confusing, but maybe the word should have been edited out before released to the public, as editors are wont to do. And what if, (and this is completely hypothetical of course) the model on the site was black?<br /><center><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/0kAXkOIe5_wKHdh7fdpn0gDmpouzkde-YSvBfOezWHmVuo-R4Hr0t2pUdax5BkfgHlsAb_aF4GLrc58ZuIpriR4IBf_VmMLVn-G9eWob2C79dyIaa2g" alt="" width="545px;" height="306px;" /></center></p><p>Now do you see why that term shouldn’t have ever, ever, ever have been used? I felt wrong even cutting and pasting another face into this. Imagine how we feel knowing that you wrote, edited, approved, coded, and posted the article without even so much as a “Uh&#8230; guys?”</p><p>As of last Wednesday evening, <a href="http://www.vogue.it/en/vogue-gioiello/shop-the-trend/2011/08/hoop-earrings">the post holds a message</a> saying, nay, shouting:</p><p dir="ltr">“WE&#8217;VE DECIDED TO REMOVE THE ARTICLE FROM THE SITE TO PROVE OUR GOOD FAITH AND TO SHOW IT WASN&#8217;T OUR INTENTION TO INSULT ANYONE”</p><p>Now, there’s a real apology. I think.</p><p>I so want to give them the benefit of the doubt. After all, this isn’t their first language. Ignore the fact that it appeared in Italian as well. But, this is the same team that came up with <a href="http://jezebel.com/5024967/italian-vogues-all-black-issue-a-guided-tour">mainstream fashion’s first all black issue</a>. And they also started <a href="http://www.vogue.it/en/vogue-black">Vogue Black</a>, even though I side-eye the name a little bit. I was talking to <a title="Who We Are" href="http://www.racialicious.com/who-we-are/">Sexual Correspondent Andrea Plaid</a> about this, and she bought up something rather interesting:</p><blockquote><p>“<em>Vogue Italia</em> is doing the post-racial mulitple-oppression sell: under the guise of thinking they&#8217;re being all &#8216;We did the Black Issue, so we&#8217;re cool in doing this&#8217; using the myriad of oppressions of women of color to sell some damn gold-tone hoop earrings named after&#8230;WoCs&#8217; oppression! And that oppression, in many cases, melded sexual oppression (Antebellum US, the Japanese and Korean &#8220;comfort women,&#8221; etc.) This, coming from the magazine whose brand is all about the sexy framed as stylishness.”</p></blockquote><p>Though they may not deserve it, as a gesture of good faith, I took a peek around Vogue Italia’s trends section. Maybe this was just a one-off terrible mistake. And I found another post about&#8230; <a href="http://www.vogue.it/en/vogue-gioiello/shop-the-trend/2011/07/python-bracelets">Jungle Bracelets</a>. My first inclination was to shout “Why!?!” But, false alarm, as I read, there was nothing really- “&#8230;manchettes in python for a night marked by tribal rhythms,” huh? “Turn your evenings into &#8220;jungle nights&#8221; characterized by tribal music, wild dancing and a bit of aesthetic rebellion,” you say?</p><p><center><object width="420" height="345" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ASPDeS3_54U?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="420" height="345" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ASPDeS3_54U?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></center></p><p>Less malevolent, sure. But I’m uncomfortable anyway, and while relatively tame, is this something to be angry about? Maybe. But, to be honest, should I be bracing myself for racism on their website now? More women on television is a reason to be thrilled,&#8230;</p>]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The new fall show line ups are hitting the internet, and via Jezebel, I see <em>New York Magazine</em> wants us to rejoice that <a href="http://nymag.com/guides/fallpreview/2011/tv/female-sitcoms/">there are women on television</a>.</p><p>At this point, it should go without saying that all the women referenced are white, as per usual. But whatever! Victory! More women on television is a reason to be thrilled, right?  That is, until I see what&#8217;s being lauded:</p><blockquote><p>Cummings’s multi-cam sitcom, Whitney, has an awful pilot, full of cynical innuendo, and yet one scene—sexual role-playing gone south—showed a glimmer of something, a dank, self-mocking Sandra Bernhard–esque allure. Sue me, but I can’t help rooting for Cummings, who seems to have something to say about the survival skills of damaged women, even if she hasn’t quite figured out what it is yet.</p></blockquote><p><iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Xnc2QbRZsDM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><blockquote><p>Luckily, Cummings’s other show, CBS’s 2 Broke Girls, which she produced with Sex and the City’s Michael Patrick King, has more potential. It stars the luscious Kat Dennings (from Nick &#038; Norah’s Infinite Playlist) and Beth Behrs, playing waitresses at a greasy spoon in Williamsburg. Dennings wears knee-high boots and a working-class sneer; Behrs is a newly broke heiress. As the self-reliant cynic, Dennings is fantastic, making the most of acrid punch lines like “That’s not what rape feels like!”</p></blockquote><p><iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/aUkwxpMVW9M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><p>Now, where have I heard about 2 Broke Girls, before?  Oh, that&#8217;s right &#8211; <a href="http://blog.angryasianman.com/2011/05/2-broke-girls-on-cbs-fall-lineup.html">Racebending</a>:</p><blockquote><p>The character, “Rice Lee,” is portrayed as a stereotypically backward and socially stunted Asian immigrant, who is repeatedly mocked and corrected by his white co-workers (including Max, one of the titular “broke girls.”)<span id="more-17296"></span></p><ul> LEE<br /> Hello today. I have check for you.<br /> MAX GLANCES AT HIS PANTS AS SHE TAKES THE CHECK.</p><p>MAX<br /> Thanks, camel toe.</p><p>LEE<br /> What means camel toe?</p><p>SHE POINTS TO HIS CROTCH WHERE THE PANTS ARE HIKED UP. HE LOOKS DOWN, EMBARRASSED.</p><p>LEE(CONT’D)<br /> Oh. Okay.</ul><p>Lee can’t wear his pants correctly, can’t speak English properly, and doesn’t understand the concept of holidays. Because it’s not like Koreans wear pants, take English in elementary school, and celebrate holidays like Christmas.</p><p>In short, “Rice” is a disaster of a character, like something out of a Long Duk Dong time machine. It’s such a shame given CBS was recently honored for improving the representation of Asian Americans on television, and just sponsored Banana II, the Asian American bloggers conference.</p></blockquote><p><a href="http://blog.angryasianman.com/2011/05/2-broke-girls-on-cbs-fall-lineup.html">Angry Asian Man</a> has more:</p><blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve talked to several people who know a little something about what&#8217;s going on behind the scenes, and I&#8217;m told that the character has actually been re-written and re-tooled, largely based on the negative reaction to the original script. That&#8217;s positive news, right? Right? I don&#8217;t know.</p><p>I don&#8217;t know exactly what that means for the character, because as originally conceived, he needed one hell of an overhaul. I mean, that was seriously venturing deep into Long Duk Dong territory. It wasn&#8217;t pretty. But if someone&#8217;s at least trying to fix this mess, I&#8217;m willing to wait until fall to find out if the character still totally sucks. I guess we&#8217;ll have to see.</p></blockquote><p>But these critiques are largely missed by the people cheering for women fronted shows.  Nussbaum, in <em>New York</em>, spares just a sentence to describe the classic Hollywood racism we will be treated to this fall: &#8220;The script is uneven—the ensemble of stock ethnics gave me a migraine, as it did in several of these shows, all of which star model-pretty white women—but the show did a surprisingly good job at capturing a postcrash Brooklyn zeitgeist.&#8221; Sigh.</p><p>Another show we are supposed to look forward to? <em><a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/07/lena-dunhams-show-girls-p_n_806034.html">Girls</a></em>, by Lena Dunham.  The creator of <em>Tiny Furniture</em> nicely parlayed the film buzz into a show focused on 20something New Yorkers. But if this tweet is any indication of what she finds funny&#8230;</p><p><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6076/6076647143_cfb54eccc9_z.jpg" alt="Lena Dunham tweet" /></p><p>&#8230;expect more of the same old, same old.</p><p>We deal with this all the time, considering that content that is brilliant and amazing on one level can also be horrific and stereotypical on another. (Hello, <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Living_Color">In Living Color</a></em>.)  And if we boycott absolutely everything, we don&#8217;t give creators time to grow, change, and get better.  But lines are continuously crossed, and it is eroding the tentative gains that nonwhites in entertainment have fought for.  Since our greatest power as consumers is the power of veto, it is important to support shows we&#8217;d like to see and ignore or actively boycott ones that promote racism and sexism in entertainment.  But the lines can get really blurry.</p><p><em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_and_kumar">Harold and Kumar</a></em> is a great example of this.</p><p>We&#8217;ve had a ton of conversations around the Harold and Kumar movies, especially in reference to how racial commentary was often insightful and hilarious, but a lot of the gags involving women presented the same one-dimensional sexist stereotypes. Do we support two talented actors, playing roles that are not stereotypical about Asian Americans in a major studio film? Or do we boycott because their treatment of gender in the films left a lot to be desired?</p><p><em>Archer</em>, an animated show on FX, provides the same sort of tensions. About 80% of the time, the humor employed about race is hilarious and fairly subversive. This is a bit complicated by the fact that the writer, Adam Reed, is a white dude &#8211; though, admittedly, one who demonstrates he&#8217;s beyond a surface level understanding of race. Mitigating factor: Aisha Tyler joined up as Lana, which takes the humor to a whole other level.</p><p><iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VH47r58X2lA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><p>The other 20% of the time? Hot mess and Asian stereotypes.  And I don&#8217;t even know how to talk about the &#8220;Mulatto Butts&#8221; song:</p><p><iframe width="640" height="510" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3YLixd4LdlI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p><p>And while Archer is blisteringly funny <a href="http://warmingglow.uproxx.com/2011/01/the-ten-most-obsure-archer-jokes-explained">from a references/intelligent humor perspective</a>, many of the female characters are basic archetypes &#8211; in a show where all the fun is taking these one-note characters to ridiculous heights.  But we will discuss that a bit more when season 3 premieres.</p><p>Back to the fall tv line up.</p><p>The worst part of all this is that the 2 Broke Girls show actually seems like it would be pretty cute, in that <em>How I Met Your Mother</em> kind of way.  The trouble is, when shows throw in racist stereotypes trying to be edgy since we&#8217;re post racial and all (a hallmark of <a href="http://www.racialicious.com/2008/07/14/the-new-yorker-and-hipster-racism/">hipster racism</a>) a lot of times, they don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re doing. You see, to make a joke about society, you have to understand how society works &#8211; and add some new and insightful observation.  And in a lot of these shows, they are cracking jokes alright &#8211; but they are the same jokes that have been in play since the dawn of racism.  Which is why you have characters named &#8220;Rice Lee&#8221; who fit every single Asian stereotype ever put on celluloid. It&#8217;s why in the promos, you have the same throwaway characters &#8211; if I never see a large, sassy black woman in a position of authority being mean to a defenseless little white girl again, it will be too soon. (Didn&#8217;t like it in Love Bites; don&#8217;t like it in the Whitney promo). It&#8217;s a lazy way to create a secondary character and a way to wring cheap laughs from the racist crowd.</p><p>But it&#8217;s also alienating.  The producers have told Racebending they are retooling the character &#8211; Marissa at Racebending asked us to request screeners, which we won&#8217;t do.*  When the show comes on, we will see what the changes are &#8211; at this point, we all know actors, especially POC, need all the work they can get.  But this kind of laziness shouldn&#8217;t be rewarded with viewership. It isn&#8217;t enough just to point to the gender of the creator, I care about the quality of representation on screen. And just like we don&#8217;t need women created and fronted shows that pander to sexism, we for damn sure don&#8217;t need shows that use racism to shore up weak writing.</p><p>&#8212;</p><p>* We don&#8217;t really review screeners for the same reason we don&#8217;t try to review books anymore &#8211; no one has the time. As long as Racialicious is a side project for all of us involved, we&#8217;d rather focus our energies elsewhere. Just as there was only one Eleanor or Winston, one Stokely or Marilyn or Mao, there was only one Flo.</p><p>Of course, her fame was more limited. But for those who had been in the Black Movement when it was still known as Civil Rights, or in the Consumer Movement that predated Ralph Nader, or in the Women’s Movement when it was still supposed to be a few malcontents in sneakers, or in the Peace Movement when there was more worry about nuclear fallout than Vietnam, Flo was a political touchstone–a catalyst in the lives of people who knew her, and a source of curiosity for those who did not.</p><p>For one thing, she was a lawyer–one of the few women and even fewer black people to get into and out of Columbia Law School in the fifties–though she had not even finished working her way through college until she was over 30 years old. (Ironically, Columbia first turned her down because she was a woman; then relented because she threatened to denounce the Law School as racist. “But it was clearly prejudiced against women,” Flo remembers. “My white girlfriend from Barnard had better grades than I did, and she got nowhere.”) For another thing, she was always taking the unpopular cases and feeding or housing a variety of social strays–long before such unconventional behavior was common at all, especially among lawyers.</p><p>At 42, she married a Welsh writer 10 years her junior, whom she recalls fondly, though accurately, as someone who was very kind and talented when he was sober, which wasn’t often. Eventually, his drinking caused their separation and, a few months later, his death. Though she had very little money and generous habits that made it impossible to keep even the small fees she earned, Flo turned all her husband’s money and future royalty rights over to his mother. Whether it’s a bowl of her homemade chili, a bed for the night, bail money, or free legal and life-fixing advice, the real instances of Flo’s generosity probably exceed their own legend.</p><p>By the time I met her in 1969, she had become well known as a founder of the National Organization for Women–though, characteristically, she had left to form other feminist groups when NOW’s rough early days were over and the going got too tame. Because we both wanted to emphasize racism and sexism as parallel problems of caste, we ended up speaking together in what Flo referred to as our “Topsy and Little Eva” team. Several times each month, we would go off to campuses and communities in Texas or Michigan or Oregon, with Flo describing herself as “tired and middle-aged” as I tried to keep up with her energetic, nonstop, and generous-hearted pace.</p></blockquote><p>&#8211;<em>From <a title="The Verbal Karate of Florynce R.
