“I was the only African-American at that gym,” Gabby went on. “I definitely felt isolated. Why am I deserving this? Is it because I’m black? — those thoughts were going through my mind.”

Gabby appeared on Oprah’s show Sunday with her mother, Natalie Hawkins, who recalled how her daughter told her about the cruel treatment on several occasions.

When Gabby was 14, her mother said, she reached her breaking point.

“She said, ‘I’d rather quit — if I can’t move and train and get another coach, I’d rather quit the sport,’” Hawkins said.

What a powerful statement …..”to let her know all her feelings are wrong.” Wow! Isn’t that something? Thank you for that comment. That is the new racism in America…… To invalidate the person’s experience of racism (by accusing them of “playing the race card”) and deny, deny, deny, until you die…. that racism still exists. Where did it go? Blacks weren’t even allowed to vote and were still experiencing segregation less than 50 years ago. Now we are expected to believe that racism is just POOOF!!!! GONE!!! Like magic…….and everything that we experience in America that looks, sounds and feels like the racism of old is now actually not racism……..but our imagination. That is ridiculous.

The denial of racism and attempting to make the victim of racism appear “crazy” or like a “whiner” is another form of abuse. It is attempting to shame the victim and get them to doubt their true feelings, judgments, perceptions and authentic experience(s). In other words, it is an attempt to make the victim lose their most valuable tool………their mind.

I hope you do a story on how white america are “blaming the victim” and is all intents and purposes calling Gabby a LIAR, race-bater, and playing the “race-card”. This young girl is speaking of her personal experiences that happened to her and the owner of the gym BASICALLY CALLS HER A LIAR! WHITE AMERICA IS TURNING AGAINST THIS GIRL FOR SPEAKING UP ABOUT HOW SHE PERSONALLY FELT AND WHAT HER PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WERE OF RACISM AND THEIR RESPONSE IS TO BLAME THE VICTIM!!! NOT EVEN ONE comment that I read on Yahoo admonished the girls that said Gabby was their slave. NOT ONE!! There were PLENTY of excuses though mainly claiming that 1) kids can be cruel (meaning that basically the innocent but just being kids), 2) they were joking and just playing around and 3) they probably didn’t mean for their “slave” comment about the black girl “cleaning” the bar was meant to be racist. I AM SIMPLY DISGUSTED AND APPALLED WITH WHITE AMERICANS AT THE MOMENT. THEY RATHER CALL A CHILD A RACIST AND DENOUNCE HER FOR HAVING TO ENDURE RACISM THAN ADMIT THAT SOME WHITE AMERICANS ARE STILL RACIST! AIN’T THAT A FLIP!!!

Yes, we succeed despite this kind of thing. It’s not that successful blacks don’t have these experiences ALL THE TIME.

Yes, but I wonder how many people don’t succeed because of them, how many more of us would be successful if we didn’t have to deal with the bullshit.
