Wyatt Cenac Turns The Tables On PETA

Okay, I have to take a late pass for this one, but Wyatt Cenac took aim at PETA’s latest publicity stunt: claiming that the orcas at Seaworld are actually slaves, and should be freed under the 13th amendment. Wyatt justifiably gave that idea the side eye, called in civil rights activist Elaine Brown, and basically said a bunch of things we’ve wanted to say to PETA for a while now.

    I need Elaine Brown to debate PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk. Having seen a doc on Newkirk–she seems to be a racially clueless sort –I’m not surprised the organization presents its ideas the way it does. Perhaps the event may be Newkirk’s “Steinem  Moment .”

    This is the SHIT! Elaine Brown is so no-nonsense, it is ridiculous (ly brilliant!!!). And Wyatt Cenac is genius. I wish she or he’d said something about the female human animals that PETA seems to think is fodder for their bullshit adverts. And still, this is some spot on.

    What is sad is that PETA’s hijinks and even videos  like this detract from the real concerns involving animal use and abuse. Is the take-home from this video that because cats and dogs are used as  pets for humans that we should view it acceptable to keep orcas and dolphins in chlorinated tanks? I understand he was pointing out the hypocrisy of using the 13th Amendment to argue orcas shouldn’t be kept at Sea World (which is ridiculous), but while we are busy refuting an organization that very few people take seriously anyway legitimate issues of how we use animals are falling by the wayside. Personally, I do not think orcas belong in tanks but both PETA’s methods for addressing this issue and the backlash from society against PETA take the conversation back to ground zero.
