Ethnic Hatred Taints Liberated Libya

“Unfortunately the uprising in Libya took a bloody turn because people no longer respected the law and started raping women, taking hostages and killing people. For two months my family remained trapped in our house. They were accusing and killing all black males caught on the street of being mercenaries, which meant that our mother had to try and gather food but there were many days that we starved.”

In an article published in September, the Wall Street Journal quoted Jibril as saying, “regarding Tawergha, my own viewpoint is that nobody has the right to interfere in this matter except the people of Misurata. This matter

can’t be tackled through theories and textbook examples of national reconciliation like those in South Africa, Ireland and Eastern Europe.”

Calls by human rights groups urging the NTC to protect black Libyans in the newly liberated Libya seems to have fallen on death ears, which could set a precedent of what is to come.

It’s not ethnic hatred, it’s pure racism.

It’s not like the elites running NATO care about the racism/ethnic divisions going on in Libya…apparently they are getting to install a military base in Cyrenaica:

And as long as the oil keeps on flowing to the West and the refugees stop coming Western power elites don’t give a hoot if Libyans start killing each other/committing human rights violations.

I’d be more likely to say that it is ethnic hatred, because they don’t have the same concept of what counts as a black person over there, and you can have a range of skin tones and phenotypes within the same family.

its a combination of ethnic hatred and racism, because  they all speak arab, but because they’re darker, they’re treated differently, believe me arabs are very clear on what skin tone means. Its no  suprise that arabs  are the first facilitators of the African slave trade.

Sorry I would have to disagree the issue of race came about because Qaddafi helped African nations financially which was something that the tribe members of the monarchy that Qaddafi ran out of power resented (the rebels). The lie of Qaddafi using African mercenaries was an excuse to also persecute black Libyans. Libya had the highest quality of life index in Africa which gave opportunity for African workers to come in to do the jobs that Libyans didn’t want to do similar to migrant workers from South America. Don’t get it twisted race played a BIG rule in what happened over their with the rebels.

I agree, but what are they using to determine who to persecute? Phenotype? It’s hard because race is not as clear cut in those countries. (And you can argue overall.)

And I’m black by the way, just to prevent people from talking to me like I’m clueless…

There are people with dark skin and kinky hair all over the middle east that would be described as black looking.  If these people where distinguishable from other Libyans based on what they looked like, which would have to have some resemblance to sub Saharan Africans then I think that would be  obvious. I am not being sarcastic here. The west has had a huge impact on how the rest of the world sees themselves now.
