Talking About Feminism: Tuesday Night at Swarthmore

Tomorrow night, I’ll be giving a talk at Swarthmore College on feminism, pop culture, and rape culture – which is a lot to squeeze into an hour but I will do my best. I’m still ironing out a couple of tech/narrative kinks, but there will be some discussion of this:

    I genuinely hope more music is covered than Hip-Hop and that even if it is the only one discussed I hope that more is talked about than ‘OMG remember Nelly’s Tip drill video’ + ‘Snoop Doggy Dogg is always talking about hoes’. I sadly don’t think it will though.

    Opinions vary. Depends on how you think about sex, the male gaze, female autonomy, the idea of being a slut, etc. I generally don’t like thinking of things in binaries, but rather, what it illuminates. Angela is a complicated character, who rejects and buys into certain ideals about relationships and womanhood, just like most of us. I would make the argument that the film is ultimately feminist, but I’m looking at the whole plot, not just the depiction of her sexuality.
