Talking About Feminism: Tuesday Night at Swarthmore

Tomorrow night, I’ll be giving a talk at Swarthmore College on feminism, pop culture, and rape culture – which is a lot to squeeze into an hour but I will do my best. I’m still ironing out a couple of tech/narrative kinks, but there will be some discussion of this:

90s Music

And something on this:

And some chat on this:

And you know we have to bring up this:

slutwalk fail

If you are in the area, please feel free to drop by Sci 199 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and join the conversation.

Oh my goodness, Latoya — you were amazzzzing. I loved your analysis of rape culture. YOU. ARE. SO. CORRECT. Thank you so much for coming to campus and sharing with us your thoughts and your stories. I think it’s pretty inspiring, the work you do. And that you’re able to make it funny and poignant at the same time — you’ve got real talent. I send you hugs hugs & hugs… and all the sparkly vampire peen in the world! (that cracked me up SO badly!)

Opinions vary. Depends on how you think about sex, the male gaze, female autonomy, the idea of being a slut, etc. I generally don’t like thinking of things in binaries, but rather, what it illuminates. Angela is a complicated character, who rejects and buys into certain ideals about relationships and womanhood, just like most of us. I would make the argument that the film is ultimately feminist, but I’m looking at the whole plot, not just the depiction of her sexuality.

Finally something cool in my neighborhood. This NEVER HAPPENS. I am going to try my hardest to finish homework and get there.

Any chance this talk will make it onto youtube? I live in Utah (alas), but I’d love to access your talk in any way I possibly can.

It’s on Netflix and DVD, for your viewing pleasure. Think it made the film fest rounds in 2009 or 2010.

You can watch it for free on Logo.com. They’ve played the movie on TV quite a bit.

      • Golden Silence

Eh, that’s the wrong Logo. (That’s some random website.) Here’s the site you meant: LOGO.

I got a cancellation on a tutoring session, so I’m going to convince the spouse that I should go to this :) I mean, seriously, my own backyard!!

I genuinely hope more music is covered than Hip-Hop and that even if it is the only one discussed I hope that more is talked about than ‘OMG remember Nelly’s Tip drill video’ + ‘Snoop Doggy Dogg is always talking about hoes’. I sadly don’t think it will though.

WTF? Have you read ANYTHING I’ve written in the last 6 years? I’m a hip hop feminist, for fucks sake.

      • http://twitter.com/MalikPanama Malik

Only been here for a few months and haven’t seen any music posts. All apologies. Feminist critique of Hip-Hop is usually shit in every conceivable form. That’s why I defensive regarding it.

Seriously? There is some really good stuff out there, especially coming from Latoya. I’m going to be generous and assume that you aren’t one of those dudes who just comes here to support men referring to women as bitches and hoes.

Funny you should mention that…more details in about two weeks.
