Get Fierce With ‘Genocide Chic’

By Arturo R. García

Not long after Adrienne Keene’s column last week, comedian Daniella Pineda sent us this spot-on mock advert subverting “Urban Infitters” and the like.

The video’s only 1:37 long, so I don’t want to spoil it, but here’s the set-up: designer DW Díaz (Pineda) walks us thru her new line, inspired by a recent viewing of Legends Of The Fall, and her realization that “Native Americans are so cute!” And from there things turn toward the fashionably horrifying. Enjoy!

Needed but I am afraid this will go over the heads of people who simply do not get it.

Didn’t find this funny at all. I am tired of POC mocking our suffrage to get a point across to  mainstream America, who will laugh at us, but still not get the point.

    • Randmarie92

This wasn’t really supposed to be funny, but showing why what Urban Outfitters did and what others are doing is wrong. Instead of the usual angry posts, this was more mocking people who are culturally appropriating POC’s cultures and traditions. The person was using sarcasm to show how annoying and disrespectful it was.

“I am tired of POC mocking our suffrage to get a point across to  mainstream America”

What? That doesn’t make any sense, “POC” means people of color, which means Native Americans, Blacks, Asians, Latino, basically everyone who is non-white. All POC of color have suffrage.

Too true. Thanks for putting a humorous twist on this issue (it’s radically more constructive than yelling at people). As a Native woman, Urban makes me sigh. This video is awesome.

Awesome. As a Native woman who’s super proud of her culture, Urban’s representation of Native culture and styles just makes me sad. Thanks for putting a fun, rather than angry, twist on an issue that makes all Native peoples shake their heads and sigh.
