Where are all the Throwback Commercials?

If you live in Chicago, you are lucky enough to have a chance to check out the Soul Train exhibit at Expo 72.

I really enjoyed VH1’s short documentary on the history of Soul Train, but the icing on the cake was definitely the archive of retro commercials. The ones for Afrosheen – especially where they use an appeal to black history – are hilarious.

Best Afrosheen line ever: “Isn’t it made with cocoa butter from the motherland? So it’s for sisters! If it was for brothers, wouldn’t it be from the Fatherland?”

Afrosheen will even help you fight a cartoon hawk!

I love it because “youngsters” today seem to think that black people having natural hair, loving it, and sporting it proudly in professional and personal life  is something that they invented and has never before happened in the history of black people.
I wonder if none of their parents took pictures in the 70’s for them to believe that foolishness (I also point it out since people point to societal pressure yet the 70’s was really a turning point in terms of blacks making inroads into a lot of professional and academic realms that had previously been closed to them).
But love the throwback and love that multi-colored capelet/coat thing that they women is wearing.

Wow.  Just wow.  I watched the other soul glow- i mean Afrosheen- commercials, and I love the blank stares all the actors give as they recite how much pride Afrosheen helps them achieve.  And of course I want Frederick Douglas to be proud of me, so I’m gonna run out and buy some Afrosheen today!
