"The superintendent of Norfolk, Va., schools apologized Saturday for a controversial classroom lesson involving the mock auction of black students.
"Apparently, during a fourth grade teacher's lesson on the Civil War, students were separated by race. White students on one side and African American and mixed-race students on the other, who were then offered up for auction, Virginia's Fox 43 news reports."
"'What, you may be asking, prompted this bizarre attack on Crayola's recognition of diversity? Search me. Crayola's first 'multicultural' crayon and marker sets were released almost 20 years ago. The New York Times noted in a January 16, 1992, article that Crayola had launched a test run of a 'global pack' of 'multicultural colors' because, contrary to Malkin's assertion, kids and teachers were asking for them…"
"'Finding a Hispanic was not a priority over finding the most qualified individual on that board,' she said, citing among the important qualifications the willingness to make the time commitment.
"However, that sentiment angers some of the commissioner’s constituents. Jaye Bonner, 62, a retired former Marine and an Orange County native, said he was 'appalled' by how few Hispanics were on the redistricting board. The final decision on the boundaries is in the hands of the county commissioners."
"Brentwood, according to the new data, is one of the few cities in the Bay Area that shows a significant increase in white residents over the past decade.
"'There were some whites who moved out because they didn’t want to be in an Asian neighborhood,' Mr. Wasserman said."
"We can't ignore 'the little stuff,' because that's It—that's the stuff, that's the fertile soil in which everything else takes root and from whence everything else springs, that's the way that the fundamental idea of inequality is conveyed over and over and over again."
