This short TV documentary is an introduction to the issue of shadeism, the discrimination that exists between the lighter-skinned and darker-skinned members of the same community. This documentary short looks specifically at how it affects young womyn within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian diasporas. Through the eyes and words of 5 young womyn and 1 little girl – all females of colour – the film takes us into the thoughts and experiences of each. Overall, ‘Shadeism’ explores where shadeism comes from, how it directly affects us as womyn of colour, and ultimately, begins to explore how we can move forward through dialogue and discussion.
Call for Submissions – Perverts of Color
The voices of US racial minorities in alternative sexual communities are important but often unheard. The Perverts of Color anthology is a collection of voices from people of color (POCs) who participate in alternative sexual and relationship practices which include but are not limited to: S&M, D/s, leather, kink, fetishism, polyamory, and swinging. If you are a person of color who has been or is involved in the kink and/or poly community, the Perverts of Color anthology needs to hear your story.
Our Intent
a) celebrate the experiences of US racial/ethnic minorities navigating alternative sexualities;
b) recover hidden histories and recognize the contributions of POCs to alternative sexuality rights and culture;
c) share stories about ways POCs have resisted dominant narratives about their sexuality; and
d) create possibilities for coalition and resistance for kinky POCs.
We are accepting non-fiction essays (1,500-5,000 words) related to the theme of the intersection of race and alternative sexual practices. New authors are welcome. Fiction, erotica, and poetry are not accepted. The Perverts of Color anthology is intended as a multi-ethnic, multi-racial collection, so we encourage all POCs to submit their stories. We invite POCs of all genders, ages, religions/spiritualities, sexual orientations and socio-economic backgrounds. All authors will keep the copyright to their submission, have a printed biography, and receive one copy of the completed book.

All submission summaries are due by December 15th at 12 midnight (Eastern Standard Time). We will contact authors individually to express interest in a complete submission.
Intersections Journal – Call for Submissions
Intersections: Women’s and Gender Studies in Review Across Disciplines is an interdisciplinary graduate student publication welcoming work from current graduate students. We are committed to the interdisciplinary research of women’s and gender issues and are affiliated with the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at UT Austin. The journal encourages scholars in every field to contribute book reviews, scholarly essays, creative writing, and artwork relating to this issue’s theme, “Gender & Social Justice.” We expect that this theme will inspire submissions that put gender and sexuality in conversation with interlocking identities of race, economic class, disability, nationality, and indigeneity.
Submissions might address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
* LGBTQ activism in local and transnational contexts
* Colonialism, occupation, displacement, and decolonization
* Processes of and resistance to state violence
* Legislative and policy activism
* Movement, migration and diasporas
* Feminist human rights advocacy
* Border work
* Environmental and ecological activism
* Technology, media, and social justice
Submit a 200 – 300 word abstract to intersections.journal@gmail.com by November 10, 2010. Completed papers and artwork are due by January 15, 2011. All submissions should include the author’s name, institution and department, contact information, title of submission, and word count. Scholarly essays and creative writing should be less than 5000 words. Papers should conform to APA style.
For book reviews, please email intersections.journal@gmail.com for a list of possible titles. Book reviews should be between 750 –1250 words and include publication information about books reviewed.
Artwork will be accepted for the cover and for the inside of the journal. Artwork for the cover should be in color and in .jpg format, 600 dpi. All artwork should be no smaller than 8 ½ x 11.
