Addicted to Race 117: Healthcare, Van Jones, Swinging, Tyra’s Real Hair

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

Addicted to Race is New Demographic’s podcast about America’s obsession with race. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll find in this episode:

Did Obama’s speech on healthcare make a difference? Did racism play a role in the pressure for Van Jones to resign? A web site attempts to diversify the world of swinging, but ends up being a big #diversityfail. Tyra showed us her real hair – has she singlehandedly resolved the politics of black women and hair? Tami Winfrey Harris and Andrea Plaid discuss.

Addicted to Race is broadcast live every Sunday afternoon at 12 pm Eastern. You can listen live on our BlogTalkRadio page and call in by dialing 347-996-3958.

Hey Tami and Andrea, thanks so much for holding down the fort in my absence! I just finished listening to the episode and really enjoyed your discussion.

Though I didn’t watch the Tyra episode, I think you’re right on when you said that this was less about raising awareness re: black women and hair, and more about Tyra proving that she’s not bald (or whatever other rumors she was attempting to dismiss).

Reminds me of the “kiss my fat ass” episode. Again, that was less about empowering woman to love their bodies, and more about proving that she wasn’t “fat.”

Also, such a great point that Solange Knowles would have been a good guest for the show given that she recently cut her hair off and has been going wig/weave-less lately. That would’ve been an interesting interview, for sure.

But then the attention would’ve been taken off Ty-Ty, and that’s always a no-no. :)

Btw, you just made me Google “TWA.” You’d think that with all the hours of ATR we’ve dedicated to discussing black womens hair, I’d know what that meant by now. LOL!

    Hey Carmen–

No worries! I really enjoyed talking with Tami–she’s a wonderfully witty and engaging host.

But I’m still saying no on the Afro-Leprechaun Love Cruises. :D

I’ve been listening to these as podcasts and am a few behind (and thus this might have been addressed already), but Carmen, is there anything you can do to make your mike louder? I have to listen with my finger on the volume button, alternately turning it up so that I can hear your comments, then quick back down again before my ears get blasted out by everyone else. (Not that everyone else is overly loud, just that by the time I’ve turned it up enough to hear Carmen…)

Hi! I have to say that I have been reading this blog off and on for a few months now(think I found it via feministe). I have to say that as a white female from a very rural small(!!!!) town in southern MN, I think that you guys(by guys I mean people) are right on. I recently went through alot of changes in my life I never realised how racist I used to be (an example: I thought Crash was a great movie). Anyways, I guess other than that I donno what else to say except keep up with the great work! (not that you need a reminder)
