  • "Over the past year I've seen a lot to reinforce my position that BET is too far gone in the negative to turn into a positive. We have all always thought the worst, but to actually see it in action is another thing in its entirety. The unprofessionalism, the tom foolery, the favors, the misappropriation of resources, the bad ideas that reinforce negative stereotypes, the emasculation of men, the meetings that break down in full fledged cursing battles, the unpaid overtime, the tears from employees scared for their underpaid and overworked positions and ultimately the unwillingness to change are all harsh realities that I've witnessed firsthand. “the emasculation of men”
Why is this even an issue? Is there something wrong with men who do not want to fit that “masculine” stereotype? Will someone please explain this term to me…..?

You know BET is crap when they take away the news and dont even show movies/entertainment from Blacks around diffrent parts of the world.

i find it interesting that he mentions the emasculation of men and nothing about the degradation of women.

tho it is good that something is being done about the negative impact of BET.

@BlackNarcissus: That was a great link , I’ve never seen Boondocks before but it’s going to the top of the netflix.

yea the “emasculation” part threw me as well. usually when that word is thrown around it signals a man who doesn’t want to take direction from any woman.

Having worked briefly in a similar environment, I believe what he wrote. Although since he mentioned emasculation and nothing about how women are (probably) disrespected in the office, I am also wondering how much he may have contributed to discord in the workplace.

It seems the whole email, including the reference to the emasculation of men, refers to office politics rather than on-air content.

Although its clear to any body with eyes that BET degrades women through its content, maybe the office politics under the leadership of Debra Lee isn’t degrading to women and thats why he failed to mention it. Or maybe its degrading to both men and women –the author notes that employees (without reference to their gender) are forced to work overtime without pay, are cursed at during meetings, fall into tears over job concerns—sounds pretty degrading to me and I assume “employees” includes women.

As far as the emasculation of men, I don’t understand why that throws anyone off any more than any other charge.
