  • "This is an enormous step forward, because the hiring of writers Angela Robinson and Felicia D. Henderson by DC and the hiring of writer Marjorie Liu by Marvel show, finally and publicly, in 2009, that women of color have equal access to be considered for writing jobs at the two largest companies in the comic book industry. Women of color in America are finally being allowed to shape humanity's modern myths—the stories and characters that have been handed to us and that we will hand down to future generations."
  • "Even if the Obamas do choose West Chop, they’ll surely spend considerable time in Oak Bluffs, a town known for attracting most of the upper-class black professionals who stay on the island. As liberal as it is, the Vineyard is about as racially integrated as a college dining hall—blacks and whites get along fine, but they generally don’t socialize."
  • "I think one of the saddest corners of many feminisms is ignoring men and fathers. It's as if the concept of centralizing womyn, valuing womyn, and studying the global trends affecting womyn has isolated men from the concerns of feminists. And while, yes, women constitute the majority of the world, the close second half of the population needs to be equally considered as we fight for justice, advocate for freedom. What freedom looks like for women will not be the same for men, but that difference doesn't automatically cause friction, or even conflict."

Big Man has a good breakdown of the many problems in the Martha’s Vineyard piece here.

@macon d: Thanks for the link.

I was completely put off by Martha’s Vineyard piece. After the first few paragraphs I got the feeling that the authors purpose was bogus and self serving. RavingBlackLunatic does a great job in deconstructing the charade.

WTH That woman in the article calling Michelle Obama a gettho girl along with Jennifer Hudson. Who does that! Then it’s the New Yorker I expect that kind of garbage.

yes macon, thanks for the link.

two annoying things about that article (but not the only things):
    -”intra-black racism”. what is that?

-the emphasis on the “tortured” lives rich black people lead, endlessly persecuted by the less wealthy members of the group. and the Vineyard framed at the only place they can go to feel proud of being black. Lord have mercy. (this is not to say that that “authenticity” testing does not exist. i know it does and it can hurt, especially when you’re a child.)

    Macon, my man!

I was going to point people to my piece, but I see you have already been spreading the word. I appreciate that greatly.

I’m a black woman who went to Martha’s Vineyard a few summers ago and found it to be extremely cliquey and segregated. Because I knew of the Island’s reputation as a vacation spot for successful black folks, I thought that we would be welcome everywhere. Little did I know that, once you leave Oak Bluffs, you are looked at with hate and suspicion, just like anywhere else. In fact, I was mistaken for a prostitute (!) while wearing J.Crew shorts, a t-shirt and birkenstocks. Pretty unbelievable. I told the guy that I was actually a lawyer, and he was shocked. It was a pretty traumatic experience, and I was very surprised that something like that would happen on MV. I guess I shouldn’t have been.
