Is that what you blurt out every time you try and convince your colleagues about the importance of diversity?
No wonder you’re not getting anywhere!
I wish it weren’t true, but the reality is this: Proclaiming that your organization has a moral responsibility to work on diversity is simply not an effective strategy.

Im not sure if this fits with your business model, but is there any chance we can hear recorded excerpts (or the whole thing!) from the teleseminar if we cannot make the April 8 meeting? I would gladly exchange my info for a recorded copy

I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I’ve been critical of the letter the NAACP wrote to the heads of ad agencies. The timing is terrible and threatening lawsuits doesn’t further the cause of diversity.

Yup. To get anyone to do anything, even those who are individually well-intentioned but have to sell higher-ups, and even higher-ups who are well-intentioned but have to sell an idea to shareholders or clients, “benefit to them” is the only way to go.
In the legal context, I definitely noticed attention to diversity ramping up when employer firms started noticing that (1) partner candidates with business, even those who weren’t women or minorities, began asking about diversity; and (2) even more critically, clients started firing them if they couldn’t demonstrate adequate diversity in both partner and associate ranks.
I am in a gig where I have to rely on good will of attorneys — and as in some cases that’s a bit of an oxymoron, it’s usually not worth taking to the bank without a demonstration of how doing what is right for me benefits them.
