D.L. Hughley Headlines a New Political Comedy Show on CNN

Before I sat down to watch D. L. Hughley Breaks the News, I was skeptical of the whole project. D.L. Hughley doesn’t immediately come to mind when I think of a comedian that is well versed in politics and current events. The author of the NY Times article seems to concur, noting:

For the last week Mr. Hughley, 45, has had to arrive every morning at his office at CNN in Manhattan at the ungodly (for a comedian) hour of 11 a.m. to digest reams of information from newspapers, Web sites, television and talk radio. He has no time to goof off during the 8-to-12-hour days; only the occasional moment to glance at his new profile in the CNN company directory that lists him as an anchor.

“I’m like, ‘Come on, man,’ ” an incredulous Mr. Hughley said in a recent interview. “I barely even know how to read. I’ve got a G.E.D.”

Just 10 days ago CNN announced that Mr. Hughley would be the host of a new comedy-news show, “D. L. Hughley Breaks the News,” which has its premiere Saturday at 10 p.m. Eastern time.

AverageBro already laid down his thoughts on the show, writing:

I’m not saying Hughley isn’t funny. His early days of Comic View were classic. And for the record, his standup career is far more successful than anything Stewart did pre-Daily Show.

But DL just doesn’t seem to have the gravitas to pull this off. His shortlived Comedy Central talk show, Weekends At The DL, was atrocious. His appearances on shows like Real Time With Bill Maher and The Glenn Beck Show don’t give me the impression that this cat is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to politricks.

He also brings up another large elephant in the room when it comes to D.L. Hughley’s idea of comedy:

Is it wrong for me to still be upset about that “nappy headed hoes” comment more than a year after the fact? Prolly not, but I’m sorry, I just cannot get over that. That sh*t was a straight up James T. Harris b*tch move in my book.

I wonder how dude could go home and look his wife and daughter in the eyes after that bullsh*t.

I prolly won’t watch this show, so I guess I shouldn’t bash it. Could it possibly be any worse than Chocolate News or The Tony Rock Project? Even though I wished CNN’s affirmative action hire had been Roland Martin instead, I guess I should just be happy to see black men working, no matter how mediocre the product.

Nah. Bump that.

If you wanna support a black man on TeeVee, peep BET’s slept on Somebodies. Now that’s comedy.

Screw DL Hughley. A true Nappy Headed Hoe!

Melissa Harris Lacewell was also enraged, but for a different reason:

I don’t have words to express my irritation with this development. CNN has been nearly lily white. Black commentators, guests, and hosts have been the rare exception rather than the rule. This is a network that responded to Hurricane Katrina, the most visible class and race disaster of our age, by promoting the blond, blue-eyed, Vanderbilt heir Anderson Cooper to a two-hour nightly show. They have now decided that the appropriate response to a likely Obama administration is to have a black comedian host a farcical news show. Hmmm. [...]

CNN is purportedly the most respected source for news. We are sliding into an economic recession rivaling the Great Depression. We are fighting wars on multiple fronts. Trust in our political system is at an all time low. This is not really a funny moment. In today’s NYTimes, recent Nobel winner Paul Krugman even opined that American support for Barack Obama represented our nation “desperately seeking seriousness.” So why does CNN think that black people have to serve as the court jesters just as we are moving into the White House?

It feels to me like the reassertion of racist notions of black people and our proper place in the world. Sometimes popular culture and media operate as forces of regressive and reactionary sentiments even as the political system is changing. It happened during the feminist movement. As white women were gaining control over their fertility, asserting their independence, and moving into the workforce, popular culture developed a new feminine aesthetic saying that women must be rail thin in order to be beautiful and desirable. Whew! Don’t worry about women competing for power if they are so worried about the size of their thighs that they starve themselves and stay at the gym all day.

Same deal here. No worries about black people as serious contenders for political leadership on the world stage if we can be safely constrained to our stereotypical role as the comedic relief.

Both Melissa Harris-Lacewell and AverageBro raise good points that should not be overlooked. It is important to understand the personal context (as expressed in AverageBro’s post) and the political context (as expressed in Harris-Lacewell’s post) as to why there might be opposition to the show.

However, after watching the show, it appears to hold some promise.

I am still not convinced that D.L. Hughley is right for the anchor position on the show – and from what I saw, it doesn’t appear that he is convinced either. He was visibly nervous on camera and stumbled over multiple jokes. He also didn’t seem very comfortable onstage, in stark contrast to many of his stand up performances. But I can respect that – it is difficult to try something that is kind of out of your league, and there are so many ways political comedy can go wrong.

And indeed, some of the sketches felt extremely stale – the issue of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac was recast with Donnell Rawlings as Freddie Mack, with all the predictable “government and politicians as pimps” jokes. There was a fake attack ad from the RNC, which is fairly unmemorable save for the last few lines – “You know he’s black, don’t you?” and “Paid for by the Committee for Irresponsible Racism.” Often times Hughley talked over guests and the editing was kind of strange.

Yet, there were parts of the show I found quite compelling. I enjoyed the CNN Fact Checkers breaking in on DL’s opening monolouge (though most write ups hated that part), and the sketch where DL Hughley actually attends a Palin rally and tries to get them to vote for a Palin/Hughley ticket in 2012. The responses to his questions were classic.

What I most enjoyed were the frequent format changes and his discussions with the experts. His segment with Neil deGrasse Tyson was my favorite, but I’m biased toward people who like to talk about astrophysics. (It’s a total brain crush, for those of y’all who can read between the lines.) Hughley’s other notable segment was where he compared the rise of Barack Obama to the trajectory of black presidents in films. Illustrating his point beautifully was a 1933 film called “Rufus Jones for President” with a young Sammy Davis Jr. declaring that pork chops would be free once he was sworn in as President. It’s Minstrel-icious. You can see the film reels and Tyson’s segment in the video below:

I hope that this show turns out well. And it probably will if it can zero in on how to produce a smart, factual comedy show. I’d love to see more experts, more intelligent discussion, and please, producers, let D.L. be who he is – the asshole who cracks jokes both on and with the smart folks. I’ll check it out next week and report back on how it progresses.

That is, if my brain doesn’t rot from watching Chocolate News.

I’ll pretty much watch anything with this guy. If I knew when he was on C-SPAN, I’d watch that. But the one clip I saw of DL’s show [I can't watch these cuz I'm at work] was not good. I remembered how I’ve never thought that he was funny. And he was rehashing the “black people do this, white people do that” thing, in the clip I saw. Not something that will inspire confidence.

As for Chocolate News, I like it. Maybe because I only watch the first 5 minutes – before any sketches. I had much higher hopes for that show. I think David Alan Grier could actually handle the news from a black perspective – and be funny – if he didn’t have to tack on this stupid crap afterwards. [But who knows? Maybe the sketches were his idea. Eh.]

I just feel like both DL and DAG set the bar too low. Or maybe someone else set the bar?

The show on CNN wasn’t horrible, but it may have gone over more with either another host or another network like BET or TVOne. I just don’t think CNN is the right venue unless were talking something similar to the “Late Show”(CBS) or the “Tonight Show”(NBC)…

D.L. Hughley needs a mute button. On his first show he played on racial stereotypes and did nothing but schuck and jive for an hour. Black man as pimps and black women as hos or maids with violent tendencies is hardly the image we need represented. Instead of breaking the news it should have been called a new age Amos and Andy.

Instead of spending 12 hours reading the news he should be signing up to a university or college to get an education because nothing he is doing on air is productive. His show is not remotely funny and in fact is downright offensive.

This seems to be symptomatic of a trend. That trend being the Obama candidacy, inspiring second-rate barbershop philosophers to think that they’re political science majors.

Nothing about Hughley even remotely suggests political insight, let alone satirical wit.

…now maybe if they got, oh, say… Chris Rock…

The show was lackluster at best. Too many tired racial sterotypes and DL stumbled over his punch lines thereby reducing their bite. The best skit was when he went to a Palin rally and asked basic questions like “why do you support her” to the people in the crowd. It was their answers that were the true funny.

DL is not politically astute enough to pull of a Jon Stewart type of show. Even the CNN correspondents from abroad were far funnier, especially the woman at CNN’s India bureau. I give this show one more episode at best. Not his best work and a bad move for CNN. Isn’t it supposed to be a news channel, not a comedy/entertainment channel.

Thanks for taking one for the team, Latoya. I can’t bring myself to sully my Tivo playlist with this junk. Or Chocolate News. :)

It’s really too bad – especially when you consider the kind of smart and funny commentary that podcasts/vlogs like Ill Doctrine, Blackline, and This Week in Blackness are creating.

This show is a disgrace. I watched it with my husband and kids and we were disappointed that DL Hugley would sign a contract with CNN to degrade black people at a time when our country is trying so hard to elect Barack Obama as it’s first African American President. CNN please take this show off the air and show some respect to your African American audience. We deserve it!.

I was actually thinking Wanda Sykes would have been a good choice…I haven’t watched tons of her comedy, but what I have watched, I really like. But I don’t know if she’s that into political stuff…

And then there’s another comedian…she’s the woman black Republican, I can’t remember her name, but very funny. She seemed like she was more into politics than DL.

DL is a stupid stupid choice for CNN. I hated his comment about the Rutger’s b-ball team…also, I agree with the other commenters, he’s just not into politics enough to pull it off. They needed someone with way more depth, and more interest in politics in general. Stupid.

I’ve seen Hughley on late-night shows and yes, he’s politically oriented. That doesn’t mean he’s deep enough to pull off his own show. Judging by the critical comments, he isn’t.

  16. Celeste wrote:

I’ll never be able to forgive him after the Imus contreversy. Those poor girls were already degraded by one person and the he comes along to add insult to injury for the purpose of getting laughs? Really? A few chuckles was not worth diminishing these girls further in the public eye. His statements were ugly and self-serving. I’m not even going to get into how wrong it is to reduce a woman’s worth (judging a woman while she’s actively playing basketball no less) to how attractive some men find her.
More on topic, I am disinclined to have tired black stereotypes trotted out for all to laugh at. Let’s get this straight: A pimp exploits and abuses people to get his or her money. Obama is *not* a pimp because he was able to improve his lot in life by hard work and education, not by human traffiking. That shit isn’t even funny.
I saw David Allen Grier perform last weekend and his material, while drawing on the black experience was not one big minstrel show. He didn’t have to resort to pimpspeech for laughs and he didn’t drag women (not even black women) through the mud. I had refused to watch Chocolate news for fear of what I might see but now that I’ve seen a few clips it’s not bad and it’s definetely on higher level than Hughley’s show. Grier doesn’t play the ignorant negro role for laughs and the show is better for it.

@ Nina: Not to nitpick, but CNN’s attempt to introduce comedy to its programming is not new.
    1) CNN International airs “The Daily Show: Global Edition,” for a few years now. According to CNN’s website, they compilation of “The Daily Show” sketches from the previous week.
    2) Not to mention the many comics who are invited to introduce humor into a political/journalistic show (Jon Stewart’s Crossfire appearance is the best example).

Personally, I’m torn over whether News channels should get into the comedy business. While The Daily Show fits in well, the host is quick to point out he is an entertainer not a journalist. Then again, Larry King Live is a staple on CNN and that show doesn’t even moderately resemble hard-hitting journalism.

If DL can pull it off, cool. Diversity on CNN would be a boon. I just wish CNN’s commitment to diversity was directed at increasing visibility of minorities as hosts of serious programming (e.g. Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Fareed Zakaria) than entertainment sources.

And yes, I admit I’m a Jon Stewart fan.

D.L Hugely is a self hating black person though. Him and Chris Rock, both seriously have issues with their race, probably with their self worth too. I think what CNN doesn’t get is that people aren’t watching people like Stewart and Colbert just because they’re funny…they’re watching them because they were one of the first ones to critically and realistically analyze and confront the Bush admin on their lies and manipulations. They also called the media out on their complicity in allowing the govt to go to war on false information.
It’s like the newspapers getting pissed off at the blogs for taking away their readership because the internet is so much faster and that’s why they can’t compete…that’s not the only reason. The other reason people turn to blogs is because there’s actual analysis, and because a lot of the good blogs usually have a social or political situation figured out, while the newspapers are still tiptoeing around the truth.
CNN is taking the most superficial aspect of the Daily Show and trying to copy its success…either because they’re so stupid that they don’t get why people are really watching the Daily Show, or they do get it but they’re not interested in going there, so they copy the least compelling aspect to attract some viewers who don’t know any better.

  23. Jaye wrote:

Just wanted to add on something to my previous comment – I did not mean to imply that anyone that watches DL’s show doesn’t know any better. My point is that CNN is copying the least relevant, most superficial aspect of the Daily Show…and I’ll leave it at that.

I have seen DL on countless shows discussing politics and he is a very intelligent man, I learned a lot of things in those interviews that he gave. DL you are brilliant don’t be ashamed to show the world that Barack, Dr.King, Malcom X, Tavis Smiley are the only smart brothers we have-the black race is filled with intelligent people…regardless to what society believes.

I am a huge fan of your and am proud of the accomplishment of your show on CNN. I must admit that I watched your sitcom faithfully and even got to see you live at UNCP in North Carolina. I highly respected you until I heard the comment you made recently on your show and on Larry king concerning the way ‘black women’ feel about the union of white women and black males. I have to inform you that this is not true, and maybe only relevant with a very, very, very small amount of black women. It is unfair to classify all black women with this small minority which is what you achieved when you made your statement to millions using the airways. I, and the many ‘black women’ that I have talked to about this manner, have no problem with the union you described. Take a minute D.L and take a short survey from the ‘black women’ around you and in your life. I bet you find the same results.
D.L, how do you feel when you hear the outrageous stereotypes about black men on a regular basis. How does that make you feel when people classify your son in this manner? I know; it hurts! That’s what your statement did for millions, millions, millions of black women. It hurt! Especially because it came from someone we have watched, cheered for, supported, and respected. Especially because it was lumped with the President Elect many ‘black women’, such as Oprah, have campaigned for and supported for over 21 months. I and the large majority of black women in this country have no problem with the union of black males with other races, especially the union of our President Elect, Senator Obama.
One thing I have found is a small amount of black men discriminate against black women saying that we have attitudes and even down our non- European features. I have heard this from several guys I went to college with and that is very disappointing. Why would a black man discriminate against his own race? Does he not think about his mother, his grandmother, his aunts, sisters, and daughters when he makes this statement? I must add that this is a small minority of black men who do this. I will not characterize all black men for a few fools.
I can admit to you that I only have a problem with another woman when I want the same man and the issues would be for any women, of any race, even my own. I have many
biracial family members and friends and I receive them with no reservations as I do their parent of a different race.
Look at Michelle Obama, even she had to contend with the stereotypical view of the ‘angry black women’. I won’t apologize for our strength as ‘black women’ and how it may come across as being angry at time. Look at what we have overcome, look at how we stood in the face of adversity, look at how we stood by and support, raised, prayed for, and loved our black males.
I am proud to be a ‘black woman and know many black women dating back to my great grandmother, and the many black women in my life could not be classified as angry, mad or even frustrated with white women for dating black men.
D.L, you are human and entitled to mistakes. I just hope that for the millions of black women who already have several barriers to overcome can depend on you not create or encourage a new barrier.
, please help me stay a huge fan,
