Open Season on Natives

by Special Correspondent Jessica Yee

This past Friday, I received a few e-mails with this shocker:

“Today a shock jock named T-Man on 93.3 F.M. in Seattle made some very racist remarks stating “All native women are hoes because [we] have casinos & [we're] all drunk”.

Apparently it got even worse from there. Interestingly enough, on the 9am portion of the website of T-MAN ON DEMAND, those comments are nowhere to be found.

I’m saying “shocker” with a written tone of sarcasm, because this is like the 10th e-mail I received this week with someone in my community outcrying against blatantly overt, extreme racism that has happened that barely anyone is reacting to, yet again.

Why, only yesterday, the Globe and Mail here in Canada ran an opinion piece by notorious bigot Margaret Wente, describing how high-profile Olympics official Dick Pound, who called the Canada of 400 years ago “a country of savages”, said something “dumb, but true.” [Ed Note - More on that later in the week. - LDP]

And as far as radio shows are concerned, I’ll pick two stand-out racist performances this year for you to additionally remember. One in Alaska where they said “you aren’t an Alaskan until you’ve made love to the Yukon and peed in a Native woman” and another in North Carolina where they called us “lazy” among other slanderous highlights, and said specifically that the Lumbee tribe are “inbred,” referenced Pocahontas as “Poca-ho-tas,” and Sacajawea as “Sacacooter.”

I could write on and on about my anger, frustration, sadness and disapointment with the human race in general, or about how little of the population in North America we actually make up and how huge the present-day racism we have to battle with is, and when I get more energy to I probably will, a lot more eloquently. But in the mean time, please do us a favour and if you are angry too, let the THE KUBE radio station (93.3 FM) in Seattle hear it.

And pray that one day, the First Peoples of this land might catch a break with being publicly repressed. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

I think Dick Pound’s just bitter over the years of abuse and self-doubt he’s suffered due to his name.

beyond that, it’s amazing how thee issues pop up depending on what country gets highlighted. oppression and bigotry are global, no doubt about it.

Native Americans and indigenous Canadians get swept under the rug pretty much. As an African American with indegenious ancestry, it’s always been a sore spot to not know everything you want to know about yourself or your community because, well, for a whole host of reasons.

love the term First Peoples. never heard that before. sounds dignified.

    now i’m frustrated…

I hate the term shock jock.

Let’s get real. This is white supremacist propaganda directed towards the lowest common denominator ala: Rush, everything you hear on the Interstate, Charles Coughlin, Birth of a Nation

Thanks for writing this. I’ve often thought that anti-Native sentiments seemed to be the one thing that many Americans and Canadians I’ve spoken to felt they could hold onto and still call themselves “anti-racist.” I worked for a summer at a restaurant bordering on a reserve in Southwestern Ontario, and the racism was palpable. It needs to be talked about far more.

I’m studying in the UK right now, and I told some people here that referring to “Indians” wasn’t very sensitive and that the proper term would be “First Nations” or “First Peoples”. To which two of them replied that it sounded too picky and too PC. And that matters how, exactly??

This is unacceptable. I think that he may get away with this simply because Native Americans aren’t a large demographic, however, I hope other minority groups and people of good concious in the majority speak out about this and how this cannot be accpeted for ANY group of women to be called these types of names.

It’s just terrible that so much blatant racism against Native peoples goes unnoticed by the general population, simply because people assume the Native population is too small and therefore “insignificant” in relation to general discourses on racism. This seems similar to how Australian Aboriginals are viewed and treated by the general population within their own country. BTW I have made sure to file a complaint against the racist shock jock.

This is really outrageous and disgusting. I think the name shock jocks should be replaced with purveyors of racist sexist hateful garbage. I am so sick of the edgy bullshit and “opinion pieces” that are racist garbage as well masked as intellectual discourse.

T-Man is a notorious “shock” jock in the northwest. I see that he has gotten more offensive as the years have gone by. He’s a wanna be Howard Stern.

Margaret Wente can usually be found writing racist articles on race. I am not saying that white women can not write about race, but the idea that she is the appropriate person to be writing about race has always struck me as odd, especially since she (IMO) is a not so closeted racist.

  13. lxy wrote:

These White “shock jocks” like to attack minorities whom they perceive as politically weak and unable to fight back effectively.

And when these shock jocks are called out, they issue their standard Don Imus-style apology: “I apologize if anyone was offended by my comments.”

Nowhere in their “apologies” do they admit the racist nature of their comments–only that they are sorry people were offended.

“…While I do not suggest that Europeans are the only ethno cultural group capable of stupidity and wrong-doing or that every European-descended person is a white supremist, even someone with a superficial knowledge of Canada’s past would have to conclude that Wente’s article is nothing more than a hate-filled rant that contradicts historical record – even Eurocentric versions. “

Great piece Jessica! This is truly disgusting. I would always call if I hear or see something offensive. These types of people should not be allowed to be on the radio perpetuating racism, stereotypes and prejudice.

Love what you’re doing, Latoya, but the Ed notes in the actual body text of articles are a little jarring. Get a bit of a Big Brother vibe from them, which I know isn’t the intended idea.

  18. Latoya Peterson wrote:

    @merq –

Hmm, really? I read those on a few other blogs and it doesn’t bother me. At any rate, when Jessica submitted this post yesterday, we went around on how much Margaret Wente to include. Since three readers already sent tips about the article, I wanted them to know we would expand on this more later.

But, I’ll keep your comments in mind.

I looked at the website to see where to email. Is this a major Top 40 station? Christ. I thought it was some tiny FM or an AM station. Why I thought that immediately, I don’t know. Because honestly I have issues with the term “shock jock” as this shit isn’t “shocking” to Native peoples or anyone else who’s had their eyes open for the last few hundred years.

One of the things that pissed me off about the Wendte article was the idea, again and again and again, that anyone who is White and cares about the issues of racism surrounding our First Nations is doing it out of guilt

You know what? I don’t feel guilty that as a Nice White Lady I managed to graduate with a history degree that had 12 credit hours of Canadian history and practically none of it focusing on First Nations peoples. I feel angry.

And Pound’s comments made me angry, and his stupid-stupid apology of “if” he offended anyone made me angry, and Wendte’s article made me angry, and yet, I’m told, I feel guilty.

Grrrrrrrrrrr. At least the letters column in the Globe seemed to get it, but who knows what today’s letters will bring.

Don’t forget that Natives must endure stereotypical sports mascots being cheered by millions of fans every day.

The Lumbee case (featuring shock jock Bob Dumas) actually went on for a few weeks. Natives kept demanding that the station fire Dumas. They rightly argued that Dumas’s 14.5 minutes of commentary were much worse than Imus’s one-liner. Yet Imus was fired while Dumas got a slap on the wrist.

    Latoya,

No worries. I think for me, it was just a bit of a shake. Like when I first saw the Ed Note in the VH1 Hip-Hop piece, it was like suddenly hearing a 3rd-person omniscient narrator’s voice in the middle of a first-person narrative.

Also, I’m probably unfamiliar with what other blogs do because this is one of the few I feel safe reading (especially the comments — I don’t even venture near the comments in other user-generated spaces!)

I think it is important that minorities stand up, and make known that this type of behavior will not be condoned nor tolerated. I am sickened but not surprised that this doesn’t raise an eye brow in the majority culture…

If Jessica or anyone else could note some of the sponsors and advertisers (hopefully national chains) on the offending radio shows and email me or post them up, I will be sure to call their PR department and have others do the same, to let them know they have lost me as a customer until they become a bit more selective in whom they chose to support.

Thank you for posting this. I live in Seattle and HAAAAAAAAATE T-Man with a passion. I looked all over the KUBE site but could not figure out how to send an email, so I had to send an email thru the T-man site, which I didn’t particularly want to do. But here it is:

    Dear KUBE producers:

You need to tell T-man to cut the racist crap.

I know, T-man thinks it’s funny to be shocking, and his show is successful, so I guess people agree. It’s a really juvenile sense of humor, kind of like when my 4 year old tries to get a reaction by saying “pee pee poopy fart butt” at the dinner table, but whatever. There’s juvenile and stupid and then there’s hateful and hurtful. Racism always falls into the second category. So, on Friday T-man said, ““All native women are hoes because [they] have casinos & [they’re] all drunk”. Wow, really?

Don’t bother explaining to me that this was supposed to be a joke, just tell me whether you stand behind his statement. You know it’s straight-up offensive, you don’t need PC police to tell you that. To say it reflects poorly on KUBE is an understatement. Have some sense, tell T-man this kind of speech will not be tolerated at your station.
