"The wealth loss is staggering: People of color have collectively lost between "$164 billion to $213 billion over the past eight years," with Latinos losing slightly more than African Americans. For the average American, wealth is passed on through the value of homes. That dream, as the report concludes, has been largely foreclosed. "

"Watch, as I defeat this faulty logic in but two sentences! Fighting against segregation means that you’re in favor of personal freedom, which is what Rosa Parks wanted. Fighting for segregation means that you’re against personal freedom, which is the opposite of what Rosa Parks wanted."

"From this little synopsis it would seem that children would gain a lot of positives from viewing this movie. They would learn about the need to stand up for personal beliefs, the interdependency cycle of the environment, as well as the importance of agency and autonomy. Not bad for a DreamWorks flick…That is until you realize that what they mean by human is white. That is right, all of the main characters that are not bees are white."

"The term “uppity” was applied to affluent black people, who sometimes paid a horrific price for owning nicer homes, cars or more successful businesses than whites. Race-based wealth envy was a common trigger for burnings, lynchings and cataclysmic episodes of violence like the Tulsa race riot of 1921, in which a white mob nearly eradicated the prosperous black community of Greenwood."

"Alaska’s population is 15.4 percent Alaska Native or Native American — the largest percentage of any U.S. state. That’s relevant to a discussion on women’s issues for a few big reasons. The rate of rape and sexual assault among Indian women is 3.5 times higher than among women of any other racial group in America. In addition, sexual assault victims in Indian country frequently lack access to basic health resources, including rape kits and screening for sexually transmitted diseases."

"Fernando C' de Baca, who heads the GOP in Bernalillo County, was quoted by BBC reporter Jon Kelly on Friday as saying that even though the polls show Barack Obama with a substantial lead over John McCain among Hispanic voters, "The truth is that Hispanics came here as conquerors. African-Americans came here as slaves. … Hispanics consider themselves above blacks. They won't vote for a black president.""

"Summary: On September 18, Fox News' Neil Cavuto conflated giving home mortgages to minorities with risky lending practices, suggesting that there should have been "a clarion call that said, 'Fannie and Freddie are a disaster. Loaning to minorities and risky folks is a disaster.' "

"A good woman is so hard to find. That's why 40-year-old Bishop Thomas Weeks, who was left by his last wife, televangelist Juanita Bynum, after he, uh, beat her up in a parking lot, has taken to his Web site to find himself a new wife."

I don’t have enough caffeine yet to read this article, but I’m guessing the person in question, upon being called out states either:
1. I’m just saying something I’ve heard others say (not taking responsibility, yet still able to repeat the offending statement)
OR
2. My comments were taken out of context and here’s what I really meant (clean up the obvious problematic stance with even more problematic but covert language)

ah, my eyes! … the ignorance! …it burns.
Cavuto is talking about redlining minority loan applicants, without any actual references to that historic (illegal) banking practice?
I hear media figures say stuff like this and wonder “where do you creep across the boundary between programming and propaganda?”
In Cleveland, I can wake up every morning to “shock jocks” on my local radio stations who routinely use sexism as part of their schtick. They interrupt or overtalk women callers and insult women in general. The shows have little to no minority representation. Coverage of minority issues is minimal, but what little attention that is paid is rife with old stereotypes. I can get a whole day’s worth of anti-woman/minority stereotypes before I even get out of the door.
Admittedly, I used to listen to Howard Stern all the time, but he seemed to be coming from a more wholistic perspective. He honestly strove to integrate his whole personality into the show, good and bad. The hosts of our local radio shows are obviously working from fictional, scripted material.
Although, I can’t imagine taking any of their extreme views seriously, I wonder what effect daily consumption of anti-woman/minority programming has on listeners and if it impacts non-listeners as well.

Being that Baca is from New Mexico, which has a grand tradition of Spanish colonial-descended racism, perhaps his use of the word HISPANIC is apropos?

Give me a break! Do you have anything of substance to add to the discussion or are you yet another right wing hack channeling Fox?
Your post is a waste of pixels

That article detailing the historic losses for people of color is very depressing. I seriously don’t think the government will do anything substantial in combating the white collar criminals who made fortunes out of giving people false hopes in fulfilling their dreams. After the bailout and “investigation into wrongdoing” things will return to being the same as always in America. Meanwhile people will continue to lose their jobs and homes, continue wallowing in debt, and face increasing food and oil prices. The government will be too invested in fighting this needless “war on terror”, which according to the Army is expected to go on for 20-30 years: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2008/0922/1221998220381.html
it won’t look into providing the help all Americans deserve during times of financial crisis.

Speaking of miscellany, I was just made aware of the most insane website, sandraohisugly.com. Apparently it’s open season on this actress for her looks and monopoly of Asian visibility on tv:
“Maybe we’re just super-biased against Sandra Oh. But for every second that she’s on TV, some other hotter Asian woman is being denied a chance at stardom. Sandra Oh isn’t being fair to the Asian community. If anything, she’s the racist. Against her own kind, no less.”
I mean, have you…EVER?

Yes, Hispanics see themselves as the conquerors. When we work in the fields for abysmal wages, we are the conquerors. When citizens of Latin America are pushed further into poverty because of policies created by the World Bank, IMF, NAFTA and more, we are the conquerors.
Never mind that many Hispanics have African blood. Never mind that it was the Spanish Europeans who were the colonizers. Never mind that Hispanics are human beings with brains and are capable of looking at factors other than race.
Wow, Ms. Baca is just on fire.

What amazes me about sandraohisugly.com is that nobody says anything when unattractive white men are on TV and the movies. (This is not to say that Sandra Oh is unattractive, it’s just that she doesn’t fit TV’s stereotypical image of Asian women.)
I’ve actually thought about this, due to the whole Tony Kornheiser apology thing this past week. http://www.racialicious.com/2008/09/17/links-for-2008-09-17/
Do you think that someone as unattractive as Kornheiser would even be on TV if he wasn’t a white guy? (Here’s a picture of him: http://espn.go.com/eoe/kornheiser_bio.html)
Of course not! Not even other men of color get that sort of break. This is business as usual.

If McCain can get everyone to focus on sexism, we won’t notice that he picked a completely inexperienced VP, and that his policies are nothing but a continuation of the current administration.
