    RE: “Kornheiser’s offends*, apologizes”

Confession: I like Tony Kornheiser on Pardon the Interruption. As a result, it bothers me that he said this because I like him. I’m glad that he apologized, but (as suggested by King Kaufman) he may have only done so because a “suit” told him to do so. We may never know.

I think I am more bothered by King Kaufman’s assertion that “It would take some mental gymnastics to turn the dry-cleaning comment into something offensive to Latinos.” Really? It’s hard for one to make the connection between a dry-cleaning comment and the stereotype that expected role of Latinos in this country is as domestic help intended to perform tasks such as housework or errand running? While i have no problem with those tasks being performed by anyone, it seems tacky to equate such tasks with one group of people, and that’s just what the translation joke does. Why is this perceived as such a stretch?

@Jus Plain Ol Me: Well, I know for a lot of people in a privileged societal position, race-class presumptions aren’t consciously noted, just kind of simmering under the surface. I guess Kornheiser mean to make a class-related comment without explicitly making an ethnic tie-in? He’s still an ass, and I know I’m just arguing semantics.
