Addicted to Race 93: race and sex

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

Addicted to Race is New Demographic’s podcast about America’s obsession with race. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll find in this episode:

Warning: This episode contains adult content, explicit language, and frank discussions of sexual acts.

Why aren’t there more people of color giving sex-positive sex advice? How have stereotypes about hyper-sexualized non-white people caused a puritanical backlash to sexuality? How do race and sex collide on the dance floor? Why have sexuality and spirituality been decoupled in American interpretations of Eastern philosophy?

About Black sex-positive blogs, Fatman Scoop and his wife, Shanda, has a blog about sex. It’s called “Man and Wife TV”.

Thanks for the tip, Karen, and I checked it out. Shanda is soooo darling and ab fab, esp. the “Fruits and Veggies’ episode. And I checked out the “Ladies Night” episode, too. The majority of the sexperts in the room were non-PoC. Even Twanna from FunkyBrownChick acknowledged that she loved the fact that it was good to see representation of people of color in the sex-blogosphere and was thrilled by what Shanda and Fatman do, which (again) subtly speaks to the dearth of people of color in that area.

Again, friend, thanks for the tip. Does anyone else have tips on non-African American PoC sex-pos sex advice blogs/books/videos etc.?

Quick note about the “Asian” category in porn that Carmen and I discussed: I did an unscientific scan of XTube and Google using the words “Asian porn” and “Asian male porn.” And what are the search results? The majority for “Asian porn” were about Asian women (rather “girls,” even though I saw some of the mature-women, MILF variety). For “Asian male porn,” many of the results were for men having sex with men. That’s how the porn industry/mindset fetishizes Asian/Asian-American sexualities.

An amendment: that’s how the porn industry/minset *starts* to fetishize Asian/Asian-American sexualities. Porn, being what it is, parses the categories even more.

Also, on my interwebz journey, I stumbled upon Jeffrey Lei’s 2006 mockumentary, “Dick Ho: Asian Male Porn Star,” (to preempt any questions–yeah, that’s the title), which addresses the lack of representation of straight Asian male sexuality in porn.
