Preview of ATR Premium 2: Tim Wise

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

Addicted to Race Premium is the premium version of New Demographic’s podcast about America’s obsession with race.

Since this is the public RSS feed, you will receive just a 15-minute preview of the interview. If you’d like to hear the hour-long interview in its entirety, subscribe to Addicted to Race Premium today!

Here’s what you’ll find in this episode:

If racism benefits whites, why should white people try to change the system? Is it possible for white people to work against racism without spiraling into self-hatred? Why is racism particularly harmful to working-class whites? Anti-racism activist Tim Wise answers these questions and more in this episode of Addicted to Race Premium.

Tim Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and activists in the U.S. He has spoken to over 300,000 people in 48 states, and on over 350 college campuses. Wise has provided anti-racism training to teachers nationwide, and conducted trainings with physicians and medical industry professionals on how to combat racial inequities in health care. He has trained corporate, government, and law enforcement officials on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions, and has served as a consultant for plaintiff’s attorneys in federal discrimination cases in New York and Washington State.

[...] Of course, individual whites can, and should, take action to find examples of white, anti-racist activism and to adopt those as models for their own lives.  Yet, if what we end up doing is sitting around in racially-segregated groups discovering why we’re “proud to be white,” I don’t think we’re engaging in anti-racism.   A more productive approach is one that foregrounds accountability and responsiveness, as our occasional fellow-blogger Tim Wise explains (via Macon D at Stuff White People Do and originally from Carmen at Racialicious): [...]

Tim Wise, (oh boy) Here’s a white guy who makes money and a career telling people things about racism that any person of color could have told u decades ago! Talk about takin advantage of white privilege!

I meet Tim Wise before, he’s actually a cool guy….if you all get the chance check out the documentary “Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible.” It’s a good film and it has WHITES who do anti-racism lecturing and activism, speaking about WHITE privilege.

As for the $ Tim Wise makes….I don’t know how much he is paid now – but when I brought him to speak at my alma matter he came for next to nothing. And only asked for a bottled water – really, he was really low key…….Not that that should matter or that it’s unique. But the guy didn’t seem to be in it for $.

Any way….I think whites talking about white privilege is a good way to reach out to white who deny that there is such a thing as white privilege. People of color talking about white privilege often don’t get threw to ppl, but if whites talk to their peers (within their community) it may be the next step in understanding whiteness and white privilege. I really think it takes a white person to call another white person on their bs! Whe colored folks do it….we are accused of reverse racism and the message is lost because that’s the excuse whites use to not have to listen.
