That Cheney comment deserves more attention than it’s getting. Greg Rodriguez’ article is pretty interesting.

That article was really interesting. I didn’t know the idea of ‘white trash’ was a vestige of the same blood-based theory of human hierarchy. I guess it’s really obvious now that you think about it.

Then the author suggests that “For too long, we’ve spoken of social tensions almost exclusively in terms of race. Perhaps the nomination of a black man for president will let that story line fade so that we can finally focus on the ever-present, easy-to-miss issues of class.”

I don’t know about that. Easy-to-miss? I think class issues in America are pretty in your face, just like racism.

Slush, I remember watching an episode of Dallas in an English Lit. class on television, with the instructor swearing it was rare for American media to acknowledge class. I think we mock the rich when they become seen as a “class” with values and disdain for ordinary people, but we celebrate them when they act “just like us.” What we’ll almost never admit is that class is an issue.

I have never seen Dallas, so I’ve got no insights there. We talk about wealth obsessively in America, especially who has it, so I see that as a discussion of class. But maybe mythology about social mobility makes people think that wealth is different than class.

But I thought it was a funny - perhaps unfortunate - twist in the article to argue that America makes all its social tensions to be race issues, when many of them are class issues. That’s kind of an old argument usually employed by racism-deniers. This author did not sound to me like a racism denier in the rest of the article. But maybe that’s because he’s trying to talk about intra-race classism, which allows you to sidestep the sticky balance of race and class and just pick one.

    About Principal/Muslim Presentation article:

Disgusting. An informative presentation such as this is grounds for FIRING someone?? If it goes through, I hope that this principal takes this school board to court.

The acceptability of Islamaphobic and anti-Middle Eastern prejudice in this country blows my mind. As a white girl from eastern Kentucky, I’m so sick of all these “socialization” bullshit excuses for this crap. These “concerned parents” who cite the war and the ever-elusive threat of “terrorism” (read: Others) as legitimate defense of their prejudice make me ill.

I know I didn’t say anything new, but I appreciate the blasting space.

& thanks to Racialicious for the post.
