Open Thread: What Are We Listening To?

by Latoya Peterson

I am sure that you all have noted a bit of an uptick in hip-hop oriented content on the site. At first, I was planning to do a hip-hop week full of posts and content on hip-hop and hip-hop culture. However, after the feminism wars and reviewing all my research, I realized I had way too much information to cram into a week. So, you’ll just notice more posts about hip-hop on a regular basis. I’m planning to cover a lot of the social issues and global issues as well, so feel free to email me with recommendations - latoya@racialicious.com

Also, while putting all this together, I realized that hip-hop doesn’t speak to everyone. Music is often associated with racial groups, but as we have seen since music became an industry that there is no such thing as a hard and fast rule as to who listens to what.

With that, dear readers, I ask you this question: what are we listening to? Hopefully some patterns will emerge from your responses and we can focus some posts on that.

To get you started, here are 20 random songs I listened to today:

Beautiful - Goldfrapp
Love & Appreciate - Murs
Blue Collar Blues - The Far*East Movement
Everything is Everything - Lauryn Hill
Ride on Shooting Star [Japanese] - The Pillows (FLCL Soundtrack)

If anyone knows of some good salsa music, please share. I’ve been taking salsa lessons for about 9 months and I want good music for practicing at home, but I don’t know Latin artists at all.

To your question (before I derail the thread): I first learned salsa to Celia Cruz, so she’ll always have a soft spot in my heart. There’s Ray Baretta (who did an album w/ Cruz), Willie Colon, and Hector Lavoe. There’s also the Fania All-Stars, too. (We have a Fania store in NYC.) My teacher has been teaching my class to the music of Grupo Latin Vibe, a local band. They’re slow enough so you can practice your shines. Please feel free to email me (my address is on my blog) and I’ll be happy to mail the CD to you. I already have it on my iPod.

OK, I’m gonna buck some trends here… LOL

I don’t listen to enough decent hip-hop/R&B, mostly due to lack of good sources (doesn’t mean I don’t like it). My ITunes tends to play favorites over new, and in the car I’m listening to NPR and XPN (our local independent station, some funk, lots of folk and indie). That, and I tend to get obsessive about songs, especially if I heard them in a fanvid.

Disclaimers aside - what I’ve been playing:

    Placebo’s “Pure Morning”
    The Bastard Fairies’ “Whatever”

Specifically, I’ve been listening to a lot of two things the last couple months: genre-blending electronica (Thievery Corporation, Pizzicato Five, Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk, Clazziquai, Humming Urban Stereo, Fantastic Plastic Machine, etc.) and West Coast/Asian hip hop (People Under the Stairs, Heiroglyphics crew, Kero One, Drunken Tiger, Dynamic Duo, T, Epik High, m-Flo, etc.)

But even mixed in with all that, I still listen to a lot of everything else too.
