Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon married?

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

I read some rumblings about this online yesterday, but saw it reported on CNN this morning. Is this for real?

Demi and Ashton, Whitney and Ray J, and now Mariah and Nick.

I’m starting to feel really unfashionable with my older (well, by just a year) man.

    I don’t think it’s “robbing the cradle” I mean he’s over 18, it’s all good. Men die before women anyway, so IMO the guy should be younger.

    This does not compute.

    As long as one of her high C notes; or, at least as long as “Glitter” lasted in the theaters.

    I don’t care what anyone says I luv Mariah! But I agree she & Mr. Cannon seems like an odd match, but perhaps he makes her laugh. I personally would like to think that he’s her “beard” & that she’s really a lesbian. That would make me all a flutter!

    Nothing.

    This is racialicious!!! Let’s talk about how Mariah’s “black” father is Venezuelan and she doesn’t consider herself Hispanic but “African-American,” and only when it’s convenient!!! What happens when a celebrity who has been known to milk the “tragic-mulatto” stereotype in the past (again, when it’s convenient) marries a dark skinned black man. Will they have children? Will they be as tragic as she?

    Of course it won’t last, but I never saw it coming.

  25. deesha wrote:

    @ Angela: Maybe her ego didn’t want to compete with the egos of those other more famous black men? NC, unlike some of those guys, is probably just happy to be there. No demands, worshiping the ground she walks on, all the pastel sweaters he could ever want…just happy to be there.

    1. Publicity stunt from an overzealous publicist — but just the news, not the “marriage.” I’m certain they aren’t even dating, and they’re just playing coy (and not flat-out denying it) because they have a video to premiere in a few weeks.

    She’s corrected that misconception a trillion times already — but the following gaffes are often attributed to her:

    * Her father was “a black (or dark-skinned) Venezuelan.”
    * She claims her father was “half-black, half-Venezuelan” — as if Venezuelan (or Latino) were a race.

    Her father was Venezuelan and African-American — hence her AA self-identification and her description of him as “half AA, half Venezuelan.”

    Ahh, Carey. 18/20/howeverLong years in the game, and still useful for a lesson in race.

    Thank you, merq. MC seems to draw serious hateration, and sometimes fact checking is needed. Sure, she’s got her flaws (as do I), but I’m not gonna hate, cuz she does her thing.

    And I am crossing my fingers that it’s a stunt.

    I’m actually a long time lerker on this site. I never thought my first ‘break of silence’ would be on M.C.’s surprising marriage! Wow …this one is up there with T-Boz & Mack 10 or Janet/Jermaine in “how the hell did this happen?!?!” territory! But more luck to them if it’s true.

    Now, I have to correct the above poster about Mariah’s parentage. Mariah’s father, Al Cole Carey, was NOT Afro-Venezuelan. He was solidily African American. Mariah actually stated this in an interview years back. Her Venezuelan roots come from a few generations back. But the last two or three generations of her father’s history was African American. I believe they desecended from Alabama to Harlem, NY, where Al Carey was raised. Matter of fact, MC has actually said that she’s possibly related to Nat King Cole. Her cousin, Lionel Cole, has actually played piano and co-wrote a few of her tunes.

    So, no, I wouldn’t say that her AA classification is a matter of ‘convenience’ or ‘untruth’. The woman always said that she was black. (I do have supisicions that Tommy Mottolla went out his way to downplay that fact during their marriage due to her untraditionally black ethnic apperance and maybe to pitch her to a wider- READ: WHITE- audience).

    I have been a fan of Mimi’s from the first & she has never (in my view) played the tragic mixed girl card. She has tried to bring up her races in interviewers in the past have tried to ignore it but I think that was more of a consciousness issue, not tragic.

    At the end of “Glitter” (a movie that didn’t deserve so much flak) her character reunites with her Black mom & it was a tear jerker but not related to being mixed, just finding her mom again.

    @FrankSky

    I’m not so certain that she hasn’t played the tragic mulatto before. I’ve never really thought about it actually. Well, there was that movie “Glitter,” where a child actor playing, Mariah, sort of lamented over being mixed race, rather tragically. I remember one of her Oprah apperances, where, like the whole show, was devoted to harships of being mixed race (and her latest album), and she was boo-hoo-hooing over this little mixed race girl’s poem about feeling invisible. I think it was genuine though, cause Mariah’s only but so good of an actress. I do know that MiMi sort of did a little shuck and jive around the race question (are you/aren’t you black?) until maybe after the second or third album, after her career was on track. I’m still a fan, though.

    Anyhoozle, if this is a publicity stunt, it’s kind of low rent. I know Mariah has an affinity for the the tacky, but if she was going to do this whole “fake marriage” stunt thing, then why not do it with someone who has a higher profile like 50 Cent or something? And if this is a stunt, it’s not even necessary because the album is selling. See, this is why I’m inclined to believe that it’s true because it makes no sense on her part to marry Nick Cannon, so it must be love.

    Oh, and I thought Ray-J was with Lil’ Kim?

  35. Sandy wrote:

    @J

    Thanks for that background history on Mariah. I never knew that she may have kinship with Nat King Cole. Cool! I’ve been a long time fan of hers; more so of her earlier work though. I wish she would go back to those days.

    Based upon the comments, does MC have more to offer in this “marriage” than NC? I know Mr. Cannon is really ownership oriented and has numerous business ventures.

    Well her grandmother was African American and her grandfather a Black Venezuelan.

    So it look as if she married someone who looks like her late father, I saw a photo of Alfred Roy when he was young and he looks a little like Nick. Wow! She’s trying to keep the black blood line going lol. I see in that photo up top her black is showing on her she has a tan and her hair all braided. LOL Tan, Tan Tan !!!
