ha ha… I’m just as offended and if not more confused than you are…apparently black girls and the thongs are synonymous… wow
What???
Now, I know quite a few Black WOMEN who WEAR thongs - but, just because you are a user of a particular type of underwear does not make you synonimous with that garment (othewise, I’d be included in the catagory “Black men and other jockey shorts”!!!)
That’s not only racist [not to mention sexist] - it’s downright confused!
Speaing of the intersection of sexism and racism, the “Asian Nose Surgery” and “Asian Girl T Shirts….Everyone Loves an Asian Girl” adds are pretty nauseating too!!!
Thank you for sharing Carmen. Wow, just before I clicked on your site I was frustrated with my own website adsense and considered giving it up. My website is themed around black women, yet I noticed every other ad usually consist of loosing weight or fat burners.. wth?
I am getting sick of seeing them, they come in everyday abundantly and I’m trying hard to do something to change it. However, there are NO text on my site that says anything about loosing weight, fat burning, or being fat. This is no coincidence. I suspect the advertisers while setting up their google adwords account are text tagging their “loose weight” ads with sites geared towards black women or have “black women” in their text body. If that’s the case, I think its insulting without cause, stereotypical and racist!
I am glad to see sites refusing, I hate going to progressive sites and seeing offensive ads. Thanks so much!
Oh, man. I (mis)read “Asian Nose Surgery” as “Asian HOSE surgery” and was really, like, WTF?
I think “thongs” is a typo for “things”–but that doesn’t make it (or any of those ads) less…absurd, really.
@ B Girl
ahh, I see…”things” would make more sense but alas like you said it doesn’t make it less absurd.
The Asian Cosmetic Surgery site is, in my opinion, just sad. I mean I usually don’t make a fuss about people wanting to improve their appearence but getting eyelid surgery is a bit extreme to me. These women are basically implying that they had to “improve” or “correct” something abnormal or unattractive… and an epicanthic fold, however prominant, is not abnormal or unattractive but hey, I guess not everyone would agree with my opinion.
@ B Girl: “Black Girls and Other Things?” Oh, shit. Is there any way for that ad to not be offensive? Because “other things” is SO not better!
R. Prince,
You don’t have to apologize for being against Asian eye surgery!!!
That operation is basically equivilent to Black people getting skin lighteing surgery (think Michael Jackson) - it’s a way of people of color whitening themselves to meet caucasian beauty standards, and the whole procedure is all about self hatred.
seriously…i used to have google ads on Does Race Matter, but once I wrote an article about homophobia and the google adsense thingie popped up with an ad for an “are you gay” test
i ended my subscription then
2 cents a click isn’t worth alienating readers
$$$BEAUTIFUL EXOTIC ORIENTAL TREASURES$$$ what the fuck is this 1960?
I hate em, straight up. Part of the reason I’ll probably never have a blog, unless my job requires it of me. Good for you, Carmen, seriously.
Hey Wendi you’re right, two cents isn’t worth, I removed them. They were bothering me too much. I don’t see how the text “black women” could bring up “loosing fat 4 dummies” “loose weight”, and “get fat burners”. I feel used. Some people are just evil I tell ya… LOL
As for the black girl thong.. I won’t be surprise they have a matching ad set for Asian, white, Latin etc. Sick.
And, you know, for some reason I think I would be more troubled if the “Asian nose doctor” was instead a non-Asian doctor advertising it. Doesn’t make it any better but still, does that make sense?
Isn’t a little odd that that the Blacks girls ad is above one the Charity Evaluator add?
@ Gregory
Eyelid surgery sure is a procedure based on self hatred…
Also, speaking of skin lightening, my mother would subtly encourage me to use skin lightening products in the form of soaps or cremes (I’m a dark brown girl.) I would wonder why being brown was so offensive that my skin was in need of lightnening but you know what, I figured out being brown is not abnormal or offensive, it’s what I am… other people have a problem with it but that’s definitely THEIR problem and I’m not going to change for them… I like being brown ![]()
I’m fwd’ing this lovely specimen to a friend at Adwords and sharing this with some students. Talk about concise–it’s a whole course on American race and gender condensed in a sidebar. Gotta embrace it after you hate it.
“A Caucasian lid crease is slightly different in both shape and size. It typically tapers closer to the eyelashes as the fold goes out laterally so that it is more of an upside-down “U” shape, rather than a parallel shape to the eyelash lid. The Caucasian lid crease is also about 20% larger than an Asian eyelid crease. When considering the blepharoplasty techniques that will be used to place a crease, it is important for both the patient and the surgeon to understand that the goal of double eyelid surgery is not to westernize an Asian face, but to create a crease that looks natural.”
Huh? Sure sounds like the goal is to westernize an Asian face.
The Ave99 website does indeed sell thongs, so “thongs” isn’t a typo for “things.” Maybe they were trying to say “Compare thongs for black girls and others.” They may have thought they were saying “Compare black girls’ [thongs] and other thongs,” but few people know how to use apostrophes correctly.
“but few people know how to use apostrophes correctly”
That’s for damn sure. And few people know the difference between “lose” and “loose”. Bugs me.
Anyway, I always thought that the largest (excuse me) consumer group of fat burning products were white women. And thongs? I don’t get that, either.
What kind of thong am I?
B Girl, I saw “Asian Hose” too.
John, I wonder what kind of eyelids I have as a black person, since I’m neither “Caucasian” nor “Asian.” How will I know if I need to be fixed? ![]()
here’s the general rule of thumb, bianca: ” are you not white and anorexic? then you need to be fixed.”
“P
Alston, don’t let it bug you that much.
You “most” Learn to “bare” with online grammatical errors sometimes. You would be surprised “alot” of “arthurs” do it in “there” writing. I’m sure you have made your “shear”, no? I actually “taught” you were being a funny (excuse me) guy. It’s just a matter of paying “clooser” attention when “your” writing. So give people a “brake”.
Oh, I agree with Rob about the website and the thong thing “to”.
Maybe they should rename it Google Nonsense…
