Being of Chinese descent, I never thought of classical music as being exclusively a “white thing.” The typical Chinese (or Korean) Canadian pretty much all take piano or violin lessons as a kid. Most of my piano teacher’s students were either East Asian or Eastern European.
As for skin lightening: I’m sick and tired of hearing the media say that it’s because non-whites want to look more “white.” In many non-European cultures, light skin has historically meant that someone was upper class. Dark skin means you’re a hick.
