“What makes these incidents of blackface offensive and disgusting is their purpose and the message conveyed by those wearing the costumes. They aren’t intending to educate anyone…they aim to be as stereotypical in their imitation as possible.”

Former New York Times editor Gerard Boyd, who was sacked for Jayson Blair’s plagiarism, was widely portrayed as Blair’s mentor. Turns out they had no such relationship, and were simply lumped together because both were black.

“They look at any Asian person and want to know 1) Will they discuss obscure anime with me so that I can brag about my privileged access to my Wapanese friends? 2) Will they have sex with me?”

I read the Rachel’s tavern post. Once again it went back to that old ”what are you… No REALLY?” thing. I wish people would get over that question already! Ps, Great news round up Carmen

If you look at the pictures of the kids dressed in blackface then put then next to pictures of blackface ministrelsy, it becomes apparent that they know precisely what they are doing. If they merely were trying to immitate black people, they would be wearing more “realistic” makeup. It’s apparent that they are specifically immitating blackface performance, suggesting that they are very aware of what they are doing. This isn’t a matter of ignorantly repeating history, this is very deliberate racism of the type that is imbued in our collective unconscious.

I find the whole “wapanese” article a tad offensive, not to mention poorly written. I can understand that using conversations and relationships with people of Japanese/Asian decent to boost ones ego is in itself racist, but claiming that wapanese are “overwhelmingly white” is a tad on the exaggerating side. Assuming that most people who are not white cannot be arrogant of race is a pretty broad assumption as well. I have seen many African Americans exhibit so called “wapanese” qualities.
I wonder though, is it possible for a 13 year old kid who falls into the category of “wapanese” to fully realize the repercussions? Because it really seems like the majority of these people are young kids, who obsess over pretty much anything “cool”. Like it or not Japan is “cool.

I think you missed the point here. If that’s the only point you got from the article, then I’m sorry to say but it seems that you’re trying to direct attention to your issues and concerns rather than understanding atlasien’s, by saying “but whites aren’t the only ones like that!”
Secondly, it has nothing to do with obsession over something cool, but defining you by their narrow viewpoint and telling them you’re wrong because you don’t fit in that narrow box.
