“American Gangster” as a vehicle to promote stereotypes? Uh, I’m not so sure about that. I saw the film and it sure as hell was no “Godfather” crap that glamorized crime. The movie clearly showed that the “gangster” caused horrible suffering that bought him a great lifestyle.

Moreover, the film did deal with the fact that Lucas’ intelligence and business savvy astounded people who did not expect it from an African American. I think this was actually important in dealing with the relentless stereotypes and pseudo-scientific crap that is spouted constantly.

I was hoping that Racialicious would get wind of the story at Pomona College. I’m a student there, and it has really exposed the ignorance that pervades our campus. I’d love to hear your take on the situation. The article doesn’t really capture the real battle the protesters were fighting. It was a really an issue of the mental safety and comfort of those students to which the immigration issue hits close to home. Inviting a leader of the Minutemen to speak on our campus is giving money to his cause and legitimizing his views as something that has a place on our campus, when they clearly do not.

Glad some posted about that Africom, I have a friend in the Army they said the military is quietly trying to recruit black soldiers to volunteer to go over, with extra pay and bonuses.
