Carmen interviews Catherine Lutz, author of the book Reading National Geographic. They discuss how the white man’s burden theme continues to fuel current media depictions of Africa, and National Geographic magazine has helped shaped our view of the continent.

Catherine Lutz is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University. Her work has focused on questions of power, knowledge and culture in the United States and the Pacific. She is the author or editor of a number of books, including Homefront: A Military City and the American Twentieth Century , Reading National Geographic; Unnatural Emotions: Everyday Sentiments on a Micronesian Atoll and their Challenge to Western Theory, The Bases of Empire: The Struggle against US Military Outposts, and Local Democracy under Siege: Activism, Public Interests, and Private Politics.

Receiving her PhD from Harvard University and her BA from Swarthmore College, Catherine Lutz is immediate past president of the American Ethnological Society, recipient of the Leeds Prize, the Victor Turner Prize, and the Stirling Award, and recipient of research grants from the National Science Foundation, NIMH, Compton Foundation, and National Endowment for the Humanities. She has conducted some of her research for activist organizations, including a domestic violence shelter, Cultural Survival, which fights for the rights of indigenous peoples, and the American Friends Service Committee.
