It’s a terrible, terrible thing. But it’s not quite “modern day slavery.”

“This is a case of modern-day slavery,” said Tom Manifase, deputy special agent in charge of investigations for the immigration agency’s Newark office. “These women were promised a better life in the U.S. but instead ended up becoming victims of human trafficking.”

I don’t recall ever reading of slaves being promised a better life here in America, nor of being “threatened” with getting “shipped back” if they complained of no wages.

    Again, terrible crime. Wrong analogy.

in all fairness though, i think that’s what makes it “modern day”…it’s enslavement with a twist

it reminds me somewhat of the british coolie system (and similar efforts in cuba with east asians) in the west indies and guyana…you know, hey south asian folks, wanna make some cash? and then boom, basically enslaved on sugar cane fields…

    Eddie Griffin:
WHO would invite Eddie Griffin to such a prestigious event? I wouldn’t invite him to an adult picnic. Yeah, he should know his audience, but the coodinator should know his “entertainment”.

    Tila Tequila:
I heard one of her songs, it was horrible. I like to get behind people in support, especially minority women when it appears they are breaking new ground (getting a good lead role or a major position, etc). Asian girl = sex object is not exactly new ground - it’s actaully pretty tired and a bit pathetic. Wish she was doing something I could celebrate. Maybe it’s down the road. Meanwhile, is there no other talent for attractive women that will be recognized today other than sex appeal? (I know, it’s not exactly a “talent”) Is this the only way up the chain now?
Thank God for Sports, Cookings, Health, and other Non-Pornographic TV channels!

    White Schools:
The white PRIVATE schools in my area have higher academic standards than the other schools, although, SOME, are far more racist and insensitive and I would never pay money to send my child to their skkkool. But, there are a few white schools around here with almost zero complaints across the board (race, grades, etc).

but wendi, i think that this situation could just be called slavery…period. by saying “modern-day”, they’re linking it with the original US enslavement of Africans, and a large part of the horror and atrocity comes from the fact that these people were ripped from their homes and chained every which way in ships and brought across the sea that way. Nothing needs to be taken a way from that, and equating it this way is insulting, IMO.

Me? Overly sensitive much? Yes. With every right to be.

I’m sure the guy didn’t mean to take anything away. I just get irritated when people equate things with 19th century slavery.
