wow…the people objecting to the chinese sculptor for the king statue seem incredibly close-minded and are inappropriately directing their disgust with the chinese govt (or their twisted version of wwkd (what would kind do?)) onto the poor artist. just because he is chinese clearly does not mean he represents all the chinese and especially the chinese govt. imagine if, hmm i don’t know, all black americans were thought to represent one thing…ahem, last time i checked, black people (myself included) don’t like that. it’s totally hypocritical and i think misdirected. if they don’t like the chinese govt or think that kind wouldn’t, they should work on that directly, not target one person as the scapegoat.

i think it adds an interesting twist, however, esp considering that towards the end of his career, king was considered a potential communist by the us govt due to his affiliation with class equality initiatives and his opposition to the vietnam war. funny how the text books tend to edit it out all that other stuff he did to focus only on his black civil rights work, ignoring the other connections for the sake of covering up some of the motivations of the US govt-based harassment he received.

    but i digress.

i am really tired of people thinking that if the subject is one race, the artists should be of the same background. it limits a loooot of really important contributions that could be made by people from the outside. it’s not like they are asking the man to PLAY mlk in a film or something. he’s not pulling an angelina jolie, though maybe some in the artist world consider it that way. (but i mean pearl AND the people on the artist committee asked for the person who got the position, respectively…soo it might be more similar than i am willing to admit).

imagine all the great works of art we would be without if we only allowed people of the exact same background to use us as art subjects. i mean, given, we have black/brown/yellow face and lots of race-based cartoons that are NOT good/flattering representations of us, but i don’t think this artist is trying to do anything of that sort. he is paying tribute to king, and i think the people in opposition to it clearly don’t have a complete comprehension of his message.

I see your point, and agree Wendi. But the skeptical side of me can’t help but to think that the artist isn’t like any other artist: don’t really give a care about the cause, just want to get paid and recognized for my work.

But you’re right, you can’t assume that of the artist, or connect the artist with all other asians or asian governments. Ooh, it is hard sometimes to be open-minded. But, I still try:)

The beef is not with him being Chinese but the fact that he is an official represenative of China known for there humane rights violations somthing King would not accept. check your facts.
