The “Lost” Bruce Lee Interview

Recorded on 9th December 1971 in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee is seen being himself, speaking candidly and informally about his life, his martial art beliefs and philosophy. Through the programme Bruce’s supreme confidence, charisma and focus provide a tremendous insight into the young Bruce Lee – the man behind the legend.

“Lost”?! Every martial artist I know can recite long passages of this interview! It’s considered canonical.

I caught a documentary on Bruce that used part of this interview.
The doc showed his papers, sketches, journals and explored his rationale for creating what he did. It emphasized his philosophy and how he took martial arts, aspects of the Chinese culture and the film industry in a whole new direction. Nothing was left to chance or done on a whim.
Granted the filmakers’ own hero worship colored the film, but Bruce Lee was truly something else.

I’ll say the same thing I said at Reappropriate, Bruce Lee was the man I and my cousins wanted to be… Friday nights, Lagos Weekend Television was kung fu movie night and we were all glued to the TV. Moreso when it was the nth rerun of Enter the Dragon, Fist of Fury or Game of Death… The documentary came out and our faith was re-affirmed. Every word was quoted (word to Kai) and studied through our love for the martial arts. Damn, we even got the nunchuks and track suits.
Even now some 2 decades later, one of my cousins who’s buffed like a bull believes he couldn’t last a minute with Bruce. I don’t think I have ever admired an action hero as much as I did Bruce Lee.
