WTF. The advice columnist’s answer is basically, why don’t you care about some REAL issues, like poverty and stuff? Worrying about racism is just trying to be in sync with “political fashion.”

“In declining to appropriate African-American youth culture, thereby “refusing to exercise the racial privilege upon which white youth cultures are founded,” she writes, nerds may even be viewed as “traitors to whiteness.””

Not surprised. “Blacks convicted of killing whites are not only more likely than other killers to receive a death sentence – they are also more likely to actually be executed, a new study suggests.”

“Recently, I’ve felt heartened by the number of interethnic alliances I see forming in the anti-racist community. Although you don’t see much coverage in the mainstream press (is there a reason to keep feeding the belief we all hate each other?)”

LOL! “I am completely incapable of understanding other cultures, races, ethnicities and creeds without a white surrogate. I am frightened by the other. They smell different. They eat loudly. They lambada. Thankfully, Hollywood feels the same way.”

Regarding the letter to the Salon advice columnist, a couple of people on that thread noted that the song in question wasn’t even racist–from the bit that the letter writer quoted, they figured out that the song was “Santa Claus is a Black Man”, a variation on the “I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus” theme, where a black child sees his father putting out the Christmas gifts. So the columnist dismissed the importance of racism, probably didn’t make the letter writer feel any better(because anyone so bothered by a racist song obviously takes the problem of racism seriously), didn’t bother to find out what the song was so he could tell the guy something that probably would have been reassuring, and didn’t address the problem of getting the song unstuck. Wonder how much Salon pays him?

RE: Nerds as “hyperwhites”. What a typical black/white world-view. What about those cool Asians who gets good grades, hi-tech saavy, play sports, wear designer clothing and drive tuned cars? Where do they fit it? Oh wait, they don’t. I guess if you’re not black and white, whatever do you is just foreign. Great.
