Before y’all revoke my person of color card…

I realize I have brought shame on this blog with my admission today. :) So I must make amends!

See, I’m not into exercising said proofs of Blackness and by extension, person-of-color-ness. It reminds me of a time in middle school. There I was on a yellow bus with my fellow black students on my home. Before I made it out, the bus got word that I hadn’t seen “Friday,” the then must-see film about Black people. I’ll never forget the taunts as kids began qualifying my Blackness based on a movie everybody and their mama had memorized. I knew then, the exercise of using books, movies, or music as indicators of ethnic legitimacy was one that would weaken my focus. So, thanks for the nice graphic there. And yes, I should give this movie a whirl myself. But lest people can say they invented the history of POC, I’m reluctant to accommodate those who narrowly accommodate me.

Hey – Donna Darko already revoked my feminist card. I sure as hell need to hang onto my POC card for all it’s worth! Especially since people think I’m white. ;)

But on a more serious note… Malena: right on!

    awesome…
but yeah, you all will love the film. it’s a little on the cheesy side sometimes, but the funny scenes will be burned into your memory

    Malena,

We understand your concerns, but trust me, Carmen (and everyone else) is just playing around here.

    And on to YOU, Carmen:
“I realize I have brought shame on this blog with my admission today. So I must make amends!”

Young lady, I hope you don’t think that measly apology will suffice. What are you apologize to us for? Sure, we’re the ones you have wronged, but we don’t have nationally syndicated radio shows.

Now, get moving. Your publicist’s already scheduled a stay at a “treatment facility,” so maybe soon the healing can begin!

    @merq: LOL!

Put an ankle bracelet on me to monitor my level of race and pop culture intake. :)

You’re going to be quoting lines from that movie to your friends for weeks afterward. I guarantee it.

By not Netflix-ing this, you just lost your other “green” card too, heh…

I think I remember liking “Putney Swope”, “The Richard Pryor Show”,”The Flip Wilson Show”, “Drop Squad” and “Fear of a Black Hat” better…

This is something like my jewish friend Casey never having watched Schindler’s List. Except you’re allowed to laugh at this movie.

I have been meaning to watch this movie since I saw it on I Love the 80s. I think I know what I’m doing this weekend.

And hoo_boy: I forgot to say curses on you for bringing up “Basketball Jones” last week. I actually found it on YouTube and now that damn thing’s stuck in my head. it’s a classic to be sure that needs posting for others to share in my misery

I used to like the “Love Jones” song too, damn. Isn’t it weird how back in the 70s parody and satire could actually be racial and funny to a wide audience with the taboos?
