What’s good in pop culture right now?
by Carmen Van Kerckhove
As you may have noticed by the lack of posts the last couple days, I just don’t have a whole lot to say about race and pop culture at this very moment.
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like there isn’t much compelling stuff out right now.
All my favorite shows are done and we’re in the summer desert of wall-to-wall reality shows. Of course, I have been watching some, like…
- Top Chef (Padma’s slurred delivery is hilarious)
- Hey Paula (can you say trainwreck?)
- Kathy Griffin’s Life on the D-List (she annoyed the crap out of me on Suddenly Susan but she has really won me over on this show)
- Hell’s Kitchen (soooo mean)
- So You Think You Can Dance (how freakin’ awesome is Hok?)
So, what am I missing? Are there any hidden gems in TV, music, or the movies that you’d recommend?

I remember Kathy Griffin from an audio tape commerical (Memorex?) where she deadpaned the lyrics to Wild Cherry’s Play that Funky Music. For years I wasn’t sure if it was Griffin or Andy Dick.

I would like to hear your (or whomever’s) thoughts on both Flavor of Love: Charm School and Making the Band 4. They are rife with snarkable moments, and commentaries on race, class and gender relations in the USA.

When I say “hear,” I really mean “read,” because I can’t listen to your lovely podcasts at work.

Hey Bianca, Latoya wrote a great post about Charm School when the season was just a few episodes in. I haven’t watched the show, but I did catch some of the reunion special last night at the gym so finally got a little taste of it.
What do you all think of Charm School?
As for Making the Band 4, I probably should have included that on my list because I have been following it. I thought it was weird that the heavier-set white guy kept referring to himself as “the only” white guy during the confessionals. What about the big ears dude??

I limit my L&O watching to Criminal Intent reruns. I love the way Vincent D’Inofrio “chews up the scenery,” as the film critics like to say.

Thanks, Carmen! Of course, silly me, I read Latoya’s post a while ago. I would have been embarassed if I had commented on it then, too.
I only requested Charm School now because I watched the finale this weekend, and that is the only episode I have ever watched completely. Excerpts on The Soup and Best Week Ever notwithstanding.
Ice-T v. Ludacris? Hee! If only there were a simultaneous guest appearance by Ice Cube. Too funny. And yes, dnA, please do write it. I will read and comment. Though my favorite L&O’s are the first one with Jerry Orbach, and Trial by Jury with Bebe Neuwirth.

Dr. Who’s 3rd “New” season just started airing in the US (the season just ended in the UK), and for the first time the female companion to the time-traveling Time Lord is of African descent (she’s also smart, quick on the uptake, and highly educated).
Martha Jones is a almost-doctor (just needs to pass her board exams), with siblings and divorced parents. As a side note, her father has taken up with a chippie (assumed to be the reason for the marital breakup, or at least a good excuse) who is the stereotypical sweet-but-ditzy younger white blonde.
So far (I’m spoiled for about 1/2 the season due to the wonders of the Net), they’ve dealt with race in a casual but OK manner. In one episode where the duo are in Shakespearean England, Martha asks something like, “Is this OK, I’m not going to be sold into slavery or anything?” When stranded in the 1910s, Martha takes work in a boys-school as a chambermaid, and one of the older boys makes a remark about her color (something along the lines of “with hands like those, how do you know it’s clean?”).
Who is obstentibly a family-friendly show, so I don’t expect them to get into racial dynamics much, but I appreciate that they at least ACKNOWLEGE it.

OK, here’s a pop culture item with a racialicious slant: In the new Fantastic Four movie, the Thing’s girlfriend is a blind Black woman. In every scene, she looks like she gets her hair done at Fantastic Sam’s. The filmmakers hired top sfx, wardrobe and makeup artists. Was it asking too much to bring in one stylist with Black hair expertise?

I nominate Denis Leary’s extremely well -acted FX show Rescue Me (with its mash of racism, sexism, screaming, homophobia, family and firefighting).

I think Gym Class Heroes are awesome. I love their music, and I think the makeup of thier group is interesting as well. From what I can tell their lead singer is mixed, then there is a black drummer (or maybe guitar, not sure), then the other band members apear to be white.

The two releases by Senegalese talent Robinson Devor “Police Beat” and “Zoo”. Senegal bicycle cop out of element investigating humorous to horrific true crime in a trippy gauzy unpredictable Seattle in the former: neo verite documentary investigating the suspicious death among the truly “horse loving” set who go beyond boundaries in expressing their obsessive affections. People of color don’t hit the taboo in their films to acclaim like this, and you’ll think twce about “The Godfather” and “National Velvet” afterwards ugh…
“American Inventor” with George Foreman and “America’s Got Talent” *without* Brandy or Rappin’ Granny (but much better acts). More world music and dancing (not a chance in hell they’ll win). Some possible coonin’ and black male drag… ‘
“Law & Order”/”Law & Order: SVU” best multiracial police drama featuring characters with depth and backstories (B.D. Wong, Tamara Tunie, and Rchard Belzer’s storylines each got good play this season– Sen. Fred and S. Epatha Merkeson play great scenes together)
Padma’s had her fill of “Salman” and now she’s schtuping the Top Chefs (whups…)
“House”, “ER”, “Office”, and “Everybody Hates Chris”were *good* this season. Foreman’s storyline with his mom in light of last season (no spoilers but very poignant) deepens the bond and parallels with House (still an asshole); The others were sharp simply based on writing (new staff or better characters or both?). Still dig “30 Rock”. Hated “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”. for the overblown mess it was. Please cancel “My Name Is Earl” for the offensive “Raising Arizona” ripoff it is.
Just caught up:”Kidnapped” Amazing big-name Black, British, and American cast, great story, and novel format that *should* have been a limited-run serial drama (like the old time radio shows), but NBC screwed the pooch by giving it awful inconsistent scheduling and canceling it after 6 episodes. Irony: it’s a hit online and overseas.

BTW, Transformers, for any child of the 80’s was thrilling!
And Ice-T and Ludicris don’t ever need to act in the same state as far as I’m concerned, let alone the same TV show. I was sick to my stomach.

Ok, now we need Wonder Woman, Voltron, and Thundercats in live action and I’ll be satisfied.
Did anyone catch Baldwin Hills? (It’s on BET and it’s a reality show about rich black kids in LA.) I was a little disappointed. I was looking for the black version of The Hills.
Did anyone notice in the new Fantastic Four, Jessica Alba is looking very “different” than she did in the first one? While she does look more like Sue Storm from the comics, she looked very made up with the blue eyes and pancake makeup almost caucasian…

I have dumped Law & Order in favor of “The Closer”. SVU and CSI are too gruesome, and while I like D’Onofrio I think Sedgewick has better writing to work with. There are also some pretty interesting m/f dynamics on that show.
