I hate that Salon article by Debra Dickerson. I think she ridiculously oversimplifies the situation. My advice: don’t waste your time.

Kenda, she not only oversimplifies, she just doesn’t have any facts to support her original premise. Her article goes way off topic, its like debating a 3rd grader. I don’t recommend reading her articles, she seems full of racial self-hatred and has a real grudge against her family that extends to the “Black Race” in general.

lemure,
I totally agree. Look at the vitriol directed at Dickerson’s ridiculous article in the Salon comment section to see why she remains employed there. Her articles are often simplistic, tautological and lacking any substantive research or cited sources to bolster her arguments. Her writing also betrays a troubling self-loathing and a complex, sometimes disturbing attitude towards her family which she frequently extrapolates onto larger social issues (see how her mother’s attitude about Dickerson’s figure filters into her approach to a decidedly different body type for black women). But she always generates lots of conversation, even if it’s mostly angry and contemptuous, which I’m sure is why Salon loves her. I, on the other hand, wish she would get some therapy, learn the difference between reporting and pontificating, and give us all a break!

The Debra Dickerson article is idiotic. She says that Buffie the Body is obese, yet Buffie is 5′7″ and 157 lbs, giving her a BMI of 24.6, which is in the “normal” range.
So now people with a BMI of 24.6 are obese?
