Re: Imus… I’m always in awe of people who manage to be sexist AND racist in the same breath – it means really that NOTHING pings in your internal censor as inappopriate for you to say. It’s a trye sense of entitlement.
This points out for me, however, why women’s pro sports are still lagging behind men: women atheletes are still seen/perceived as sex objects, as what they can BRING to the table for MEN, and those men still seem to demand superior atheletic ability with greater-than-average attractiveness (and a given with that is perceived hetero-ness, I suppose so as to maintain the illusion/fantasy that they have a chance?), or why bother sponsering/supporting them?
So that’s the gender-equality angle… I don’t think his comments are racist in the sense of ALL black women/athletes being a certain way, but they are certainly racist in that Imus has totally bought into what a black woman or black athlete SHOULD look like in order to be acceptable to him (a white male). It’s that pesky deeply ingrained societal racism that is the most difficult to ditch.
