In the context of history, discussion, and debate I have no problem with people using the word nigger, however I don’t see how saying “the N-word” is harmful to that discussion. This isn’t a word like vagina, where people self-censor to the v-word out of personal feelings of shame or awkwardness. If that was the case I’d agree with the anti-__-word people; doing that and then attempting to discuss female sexuality or feminist liberation would prove counter-intuitive. But nigger is akin to saying cunt, it has no obfuscated benign origin. This is not an innocuous word being imbued with assertions of shame and guilt. Saying the “n-word” is no more dishonest as saying the f-word is being dishonest to the word fuck. Now before someone asks me about the awkwardness of using the “f-word” in the steamy erotic misadventures of one’s love life, chances are you aren’t at that moment attempting an objective discussion surrounding the term. At that point you’re obviously utilizing the edginess of the word. In the context of debate saying the “n-word” or nigger, it’s not helpful it’s not harmful and that’s good. It means we’re talking about the issues and implications OF that word and not reveling IN the word itself, which is why most people use the term in the first place. Choosing to refer to it as the n-word is choosing not to give it a presence. I doubt Carmen is editing it to preserve her dignity, or out of timidity, or infantilizing the issue, or being evasive of the issue in any way. I simply don’t see the “obligation” to use the word nigger in discussing the topic. I’m all for honesty and that’s the problem I have with the word, it’s so inherently dishonest when people use the word. It’s an act of pure self-deception, you’re taking a piss on yourself and it’s YOU that’s convinced it’s rain.
