The article about black immigrants in college says, “Black immigrants were defined as students who emigrated directly from Africa or the Caribbean, including countries such as Guyana that are on the South American continent and nations in the black diaspora or their American-born sons and daughters.”

I hope the article is being overly reductive here for the sake of brevity, because it is problematic if that’s the complete operational definition of black immigrants. Not all people from those areas are considered black in their respective societies (nor would they necissarily be so here), so emigrating from those areas doesn’t mean you should automatically be counted as a black immigrant. So maybe the numbers the study found are inflated?
