Asian-black romance in Akira’s Hip Hop Shop

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

After all the ugliness of last week’s AsianWeek flap, how about some positivity for a change?

This new indie film, Akira’s Hip Hop Shop, looks pretty interesting. It’s about the relationship between an Asian-American man (played by James Kyson Lee from NBC’s “Heroes” – whut whut!) and an African-American woman (played by Emayatzy Cornealdi). It’s directed by Joe Doughrity. Thanks very much to Kim for the tip!

can’t wait to see it. i was so disappointed when the jet-li/aaliyah movie “romance” ended with a big hug instead of the kiss you’d expect…

My only problem is the way it is filmed you can hardly see the face of the girl. more lighting please !

Yeah, I think it’s the bad quality of YouTube, plus the source video file was probably too dark. I’m sure the actual movie will be of normal lighting. :D

    Hey Bohemian Writer-
Are you actually decended from folks from Bohemia? Or are you using that term in the way others use it to idenity with certain aspects of American NY culture?

My family is from Bohemia and generally we find that those who do anti-racism/oppression work are interested in knowing using the word Bohemian as a term of coolness is rather offensive to many Bohemians. It generalizes our culture. A culture and people that has suffered greatly since WWII.

It’s kind of like a white person saying they’re Black/Asian/Latino/Native/Mixed and so on because those folks seems cool. Think the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Though Bohemia is no longer a country we Bohemians deserve respect by not having our culture mocked. Just thought I’d give you a heads up just incase. If you are a fellow Bohemian..then hey brother! Thanks!

Yay! I’m so glad for this movie. I find there’s this huge barrier between blacks and asians when it comes to relationships, especially black females and asian males, who aren’t stereotypically seen as attractive (no, I don’t agree with this opinion). I especially found this out when me and this asian friend I had wanted to date, but after much negative comments, looks and much pressure from family and friends we broke up. :(
