    *lol* Kids…

Don’t mind my reminiscing(sp?): Several years ago, my mom was putting up our Christmas decorations outside. Our newest acquisition was a black, light-up Santa Claus. As she was setting him up, 2 neighborhood kids – both of them white – came up to her.

One of them asked, “Why does Santa look like that?”

The other one said, “It’s because he’s covered with soot.”

My mom smiled and said, “No, it’s because he’s dark like me.”

The first boy said, “Wow! I’m gonna try to get *both* Santas to come visit my house this year!” ;-D

Angel H.: (sigh) The stories we could share…I like the way your mom handled that.

    Carmen,

Not sure why this is interesting, or what thoughts it elicits (feels like I want to say ‘provokes’) in me, except that the velcro issue is something my son and I laugh about, as he hates that his cross-strap bookpack will attack his hair if he’s not careful.

I am recalling, as I write this, a girl named Amber Johnson, who, I swear, was “passing” for something other than Black (maybe just plain old human, I don’t know), asked if I actually had to comb/brush/style my hair in college, and I answered her without ‘tude, and I think she asked to touch it….hmmm…

I was thinking about this earlier and remembering the conversations I’ve had as a kid with friends of different races. We had a common curiosity about each other. We knew we were different; we weren’t sure why. But in the end, we’d shrug our shoulders and start a game of freeze tag!
