On the topic of the NHL and the lack of black players (and thus coaches) - I think much of that has to do with that the NHL relies a lot more on foreign talent than the other leagues, and a lot of that foreign talent is from Canada or Europe, versus (say) baseball.

There’s also the cost factor - hockey is extremely expensive compared to basketball, baseball or football (either one).

Jay: My husband plays goalie on ice after years of playing on rollerblades and before that, street hockey. It is sheer economics.

At one rink, the difference in price for kid’s hockey (like, 9 YOs) between ice and roller was $300 - and that doesn’t include equipment.

Compare that to baseball, where you need a glove, bat, ball, and empty lot. Basketball where you need a hoop (not even a net) or a crate nailed up to a tree, and a ball. Or football where you need a ball and an empty lot.

Since colleges overwhelmingly rely on competitive high school teams for recruits, the average public school, even in a middle income neighborhood, needs sports in which they can have the maximum amt. of kids play for the least amt. of cost for equipment. It’s why I think football remains so big, and hockey is the venue of the upper-middle class.

Hockey is slowly getting more diverse, both because of increased upward mobility of minorities, and because of increased lateral diversity in areas where hockey is supported by the community (i.e. Scott Gomez is Alaskan, a lot of African-descent prof. players are from Canada or the northern tier of the US).
