These lines in Baggini’s op-ed are right on the money:

“… most people in this country are not racist, if by that politically abused word we mean race hatred. If, however, we see racism in terms of insensitivity and ignorance, then racism is indeed rife. But then so is insensitivity and ignorance to difference in class, sex, age, region, political persuasion, religious belief and so on, all of which are pretty much universal …”

    Oh, please.

Racism is the belief that one race is superior to another and while it’s not as rife in the UK and America, racism is a word that now encompasses racial stereotyping, discrimination, and prejudice and there is plenty to go around.

The conclusion that racism is dead because it’s mainly a “misunderstand” and “lack of sensitivity” is bunk. Whites in both countries have simply been better at hiding their overt racism.

I want to comment on the separation of White/Black Atlanta separation. The reason that Whites want to separate is because they became sick of having their tax dollars go to supporting poor Blacks and not for their benefit. The Blacks are protesting because they will lose all the tax dollars from “Whitey”. Doesn’t this idea go against what you preach on this website, that being that visible minorities don’t need the help of Whites to succeed? That they can make it on their own and that the White Man keeps the Blacks down?

This is a perfect chance to prove otherwise, and to show once and for all that Blacks CAN make it on their own, without anybody’s help.

However, this protest further instills the notion that Blacks need the help of Whites to succeed (survive).

    Wouldn’t you agree?

I completely disagree. This is not about whether Blacks can “make it on their own” without Whitey. This is about rich vs. poor and is an example of racialized class discrimination.

If the poor community was mainly white, they would be seen as “down on their luck,” “just needing a helping hand,” and “oh its too bad they couldn’t go to college.” The rich whites might complain a little, but it would never get to the point of secession. Instead, the blacks are viewed as lazy and ignorant eyesores who are just leeching off “our” tax money, and “why don’t they just get jobs,” and even “I used to work at McDonald before I got a legacy scholarship to Emory…”

This is more of a class issue but it does contain racial overtones.

Rich whites aren’t inclined to assist poor whites; the fact that the poor, in this case, are black makes rich whites even less inclined to help. It would even drive them to isolate themselves from them.

Talk about stereotyping … amazing that you know exactly what everyone would think and say!

If you look into the conversations, subtle racism can be detected but I won’t expect you to acknowledge that fact considering you don’t want to believe it.

Why is during the whole photo controversy, white people with items were called “finders” while the black people with items were called “looters.”

Why is it in yesterday’s New York Post, the article mentioned the criminal’s racial background as “Puerto Rican” when it clearly wasn’t critical to the story?

See, it’s not the fact that people stereotype whites for being racist just because they’re white; it’s because whites have a history of racial bullshit which is still pretty easy to detect. Whites have gotten better at covering up on their overt racism but their subtle racism needs a little more work.

Might I also add that whites still don’t believe that a “glass ceiling” exists today in major corporations despite the fact that it can be proven that minorities make considerably less money for doing the same job.

    Rob:

Oh, I understand now. “All” whites have a history of racial BS, just like “all” whites still don’t believe in the glass ceiling.

How can you — or Anonymous above — claim to speak for all whites? How do you know what they think or believe?
