Whoop that waif: Black Snake Moan

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

Update: Looks like they pulled the video, and I couldn’t find another trailer on YouTube. If anyone can find the trailer online, please post a link. Thanks!

We warned told you about Black Snake Moan back in May. It’s Craig Brewer’s follow-up to Hustle & Flow and it’s all about pushing our buttons when it comes to race and sex.

The trailer is out now (hat tip to Christopher) and it looks like Sam Jackson will be playing the time-honored role of The Magic Negro, saving waifish white Christina Ricci from her own sexual demons. Even if he has to chain her up in his kitchen:

Wow. I am laughing because my mind just can’t grasp the concept of this being a real movie that someone invested in and planned play on the big screen.

Did she have a confed flag on her shirt?
    Weird looking movie.

First Snakes on A Plane, then Black Snake Moan? What is up with Samuel Jackson. I thought he wasn’t doing drugs anymore, but I guess he is in a lot of debt hence the awful movie roles. Hopefully this will see a very limited release and disappear quickly.

Brewer is pretty aware of the iconography he’s playing with. I don’t know if living in Memphis hood and hanging out with 3-6 and Singleton has made him believe he has a Negro pass or not, but from my convo with him I think we can wait and see on this one before tossing him to the wolves. I mean have we seen this one yet?

I saw the movie….and it was sort of strange. But i think it’s funnier that a black man saves the poor white girl and not the other way around. There are too many movies in which the a white person saves the minority, i.e Freedom Writers, Dangerous Minds, etc.
