Guacamole: Corn syrup, check. Food coloring, check. Avocadoes? Don’t need ‘em.

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

avocados - something that Kraft Foods guacamole doesn't have a lot ofEwww… In case you needed convincing that freshly-made guacamole is the best way to go, here comes word that Kraft Foods guacamole, sold in supermarkets, is basically green glue:

No wonder store-bought guacamole tastes like glue: It is glue! Okay, not really, but it certainly isn’t real avocados, either. As Los Angeles resident Brenda Lifsey discovered, the green glop sold by Kraft Foods is primarily composed of staggering amounts of coconut and soybean oils, corn syrup, modified food starch, and food coloring, with a minuscule amount of avocado thrown in. She was so upset that she took Kraft’s ass to court on Wednesday, and her lawyer says other faux-guac purveyors will soon be targeted as well.

Gross! While we’re on the topic, does anyone have a good guacamole recipe they want to share? We’re food lovers here at Racialicious. :)

    Kraft makes whack guac…

I never buy prefab guacamole (and most of my friends will say it’s annoying that I don’t buy pre-fab anything) and I’m glad I don’t. The ladies over at Racialious point us towards a post that reveals what is actually……

Disgusting!!! I just started eating guacomole. Looks like I might go back to not eating it anymore.

I don’t have a guacomole recipe but I have learned a lot about how gross a lot of food is by reading Michael Pollen’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma. For instance that corn in the corn syrup in the “guacomole” was genetically modified of course. But it was also grown with copious amounts of petroleum. Yep, the stuff that goes in our cars. And so much of our food is made with corn that’s been processed to heck, that one can bet much of what we eat is basically the same stuff that feeds our vehicles. Yum yum!

If you want to buy guacamole then I recommend Trader Joe’s, which has lots of real avocado in it.

Otherwise, I have this recipe for what they call “tangy avocado salsa” but I think is pretty near guacamole. My aunt gave me a pack of “quick ‘n easy vegetarian recipe cards” last Christmas, and the guacamole is adapted from this. Here goes:

    Two ripe avocados
One small green chili pepper, seeded and chopped
    2 tsp. lime juice
1 tsp. garlic, mashed or chopped very fine
    3 Tbsp. coriander leaves
Either 1 medium dried chipotle chili, chopped and reconstituted in in a few tablespoons of hot water for 15 minutes OR 1 tsp. hot smoky paprika
    1/4 tsp. fresh ground pepper
    Pinch salt

Mash the avocados, combine with the other ingredients, blend thoroughly, and let chill for a few hours to let the ingredients meld. Enjoy! This is good enough to eat plain, with a spoon. :D

No recipes here, but if you want good guac & chips when you have a snack attack, get the chips & guac at any of the Chipotle joints around town. Good eatin’.

    Oh hell yeah!

    Salvadoran “Guacamol”.

4 avocados (ripe but not mushy). Whip em. Whip em real good.
Juice of half a lime. Cut lime crossways to break maximum number of little lime capsule thingeys. You know what I mean.
    Salt. Pepper.
    Finely chopped large white onion.
Cubed squeeky cheese (sorry folks do not have the real name for this, but am pretty sure it is fresh cheese, and it squeeks when you eat it)
    Chopped up devilled egg.

Anything else added to the mix is pure sacrilege and WHAT WERE YOU THINKING PUTTING TOMATO AND MAYONNAISE IN IT WHITEY I DON’T CARE WHAT THE MEXICANS DO.

Serve with salvadoran corn tortillas (pancake like in size & thickness though not sweet). Enjoy!

You can make a quick and yummy version of guac by mashing up one or more avocadoes and mixing in your favorite variety of salsa. Trust me, it’s delicious!!
