Yes - my first thought was that it was very euro-centric — that the slaughter of the mayans was a blessing since they were so savage. Not surprising given the author. I think the mayans did have state sponsored violence, but compared to US wars and police abuse, I’d guess that the US govt has maimed and killed and stolen from more people than the mayan govt.
