Speaking of hung black men…

by Carmen Van Kerckhove

After seeing my last post on the “I’m Hung Like a Black Man” T-shirt, HighJive from MultiCultClassics emailed me the ad below, which apparently runs extensively in hip hop and urban publications. Seems like some folks just can’t let go of “positive” stereotypes:

Right… cause it’s SO much better for someone to be macho and use the WRONG SIZE… so that it completely fails its function.

*eyeroll* wonder if anyone falls for this?

The only ray of light I can see in this is that now guys won’t have the “it doesn’t fit” defense in order to get away with not using a condom and using the ol’ “I’ll pull out” line…

i don’t think there’s anything really wrong with the ad itself, it’s just that it’s run more in black-read publications and not white-read ones (well, not that i’ve seen, but i don’t read a lot of magazines that would advertise condoms at all.)

unless i’m missing something. i mean, magnum condoms have been around as long as i’ve known about condoms, and i’m sure some people actually need them, since regular condoms need to fit the less endowed men too.

and, just sharing, if anyone needs to know, those non latex avanti condoms are big also, though they aren’t advertised that way, because i guess it’s more of a selling point that they aren’t latex. the problem with them though is since they don’t tell you they’re big, you might buy them and not be big enough for them, which sucks if you or your partner are allergic to latex.

According to this, it’s EXCLUSIVELY in predominantly black magazine, which is a real problem.

The message is “positive” stereotyping, I’m not thrilled with the militaristic crap (soldier? puh-leeze), and it’s tasteless besides.

It also connotes for me that horrible history of black men being alternately envied for supposed sexual prowess and demonized for supposed predatory animalistic behavior, particularly towards white women.. often by the same person at the same time.

    lyonside,

just to clarify, not sure it’s EXCLUSIVELY in black publications. it may also appear in other male mags. but it does appear often and regularly in black pubs. carmen’s word is extensively, which is correct.

Oops – Good point – I misread “extensively”.

Still, it’s borderline obnoxious and frankly dangerous – the wrong size defeats the purpose, and I can see people buying the wrong size on ego alone.
