Spoof of “Hip Hop Weekly”

by Carmen Van Kerckhove
As we’ve noted on Racialicious, Dave Mays and Benzino - the disgraced owners of The Source magazine who were recently forced out, are launching a new weekly hip hop magazine. The folks at Idolator imagine what the first cover might look like. Funny stuff.

It seems as if this is making fun of the legitimacy of hip hop culture, which seems to be problematic. Without it being recognized as a part of black culture, it is allowed to be spoofed by every other culture and morphed into “everybody’s” music or culture. It’s seen again here, where they are poking fun at the “clowns” that now represent hip hop (a far cry from it’s origins) and somewhat playing it up on the white male fear of black male “sexuality”.
By the way, ever since MMW has changed, so have the posts. They seem to be more loose; lacking the analytical power it had before. Perhaps you may want to look into that. MMV was written about in newspapers as a good source for race politics. Now, it just seems to be a gossip source for “race politics”. Are you using the same contributors?

Really? I didn’t take it that way. I think that if anything, they’re making fun of Dave Mays and Benzino - who are pretty good targets if you ask me, considering the way they completely destroyed the credibility of The Source — which once truly was regarded as the bible of hip hop.
And thanks for your remarks about the perceived changes to this blog, but I don’t really see it the same way. In my mind, MMW/Racialicious has always been a blend of the lighter stuff with the heavier stuff. Not every post will be a masterpiece of critical race analysis. Sometimes we just want to point out particular incidents or examples, and these often end up becoming parts of trends that we notice over time, at which point we write more in-depth about those trends.

I second that emotion. Considering the premise of a weekly printed tabloid doing what several online sites are and have been ALREADY doing superbly, not to mention the constant infighting and indecisions that threatens to sink their new ship before it even gets out of port, I think they deserve the bed they made for themselves. There’s no schadenfreude here; if you live your life by hip-hop, you either step up or get left back, ain’t no cryin’ in baseball.
And speaking as a artist/designer, the virtually dead-on spoof is hilarious.
